Chapter 3

I didn't hear him come in.

I was standing at the bathroom mirror, dabbing hydrogen peroxide on my split lip, when the door slammed against the wall. Elijah filled the doorway. His tie was loose. His eyes were bright and cold.

"Get dressed."

I set the cotton pad down. "What?"

"The Whitmore gala. You're coming. And you're going to apologize to Poppy in front of everyone there."

I turned to face him. "I didn't send anyone to her hotel."

"She has a photograph."

"She has a photograph of a man standing on a sidewalk."

He took a step into the room. His jaw worked. "Wear the black dress. The long one. And do something about your face."

I looked at him. At the man I had built from nothing. Then I turned back to the mirror and reached for my concealer.

---

The Whitmore ballroom glittered. Chandeliers spilled amber light across polished marble. Waiters drifted between tuxedos and gowns with silver trays. I recognized half the room. The other half recognized me.

I kept my chin up. My back hurt where I'd fallen on the pavement two days before—a deep ache that pulsed with every step. I pressed my thumbnail into my palm and walked beside Elijah as though I belonged there.

Poppy was already waiting, of course. Pale pink chiffon. A diamond at her throat that I'd never seen before. She lifted her champagne flute when she saw us and smiled like a woman who had been practicing.

Elijah stopped in the center of the room. Not near the bar. Not near the edge. The center. Where everyone could see.

"Cecilia." His voice carried. "You have something to say."

Conversations paused. Heads turned. I felt the room fold its attention around us.

I kept my voice low. "Elijah. Not here."

"Here."

"I didn't do it."

His hand came up so fast I didn't see it move. Just felt it. A crack of heat across my cheekbone that snapped my head to the side. Someone gasped. A glass shattered somewhere behind me.

I held very still. I tasted copper. My lip had opened again.

When I turned back to face him, I made sure my eyes were empty.

"Kneel," he said.

A murmur moved through the room. I saw a woman I'd hosted for dinner last spring lift her phone. Its little black lens pointed at my face.

"Elijah—" Poppy stepped forward, one delicate hand fluttering to her collarbone. "Please. This isn't necessary."

"Kneel, Cecilia."

I looked at the marble floor. Then at Poppy. She was already arranging her expression—the trembling lip, the wet-eyed reluctance, the saint bearing an unwanted crown.

I lowered myself.

My knees hit the marble hard. My back screamed. I pressed my thumbnail into my palm until I felt the skin split. A warm bead slid down my wrist and into the cuff of my glove.

Poppy knelt too, of course. That was the whole performance. She reached for my elbow with both hands, her voice pitched just loud enough to carry.

"Please, get up. Please, Cecilia, I forgive you, please stand up—"

Cameras clicked. Phones lifted. Somewhere a journalist murmured into a recorder. Poppy's fingers on my elbow were gentle. Her eyes were shining. She was magnificent.

I leaned toward her ear as she pretended to lift me.

"Enjoy it," I said quietly, "while it lasts."

Her smile didn't move. But I felt her fingers stiffen on my elbow.

I stood on my own.

Elijah was already turning back to a group of men near the bar. Deal closed. Wife handled. He didn't look at me again.

I walked out through the parting crowd, one steady step after another, and I did not touch my cheek until I was inside the car.

---

I didn't sleep. I made coffee at three in the morning and carried it into the study.

The laptop opened. My fingers moved on their own. I keyed into the private banking portal—the one linked to my grandfather's trust. The account he'd set up before I was born. The account that had put me through school, bought my first car, funded the deposit on Elijah's very first office lease.

I hadn't checked the balance in over a year. There had been no reason. It was there. It was always there.

The page loaded.

I stared.

Then I scrolled.

The first withdrawal was eleven months ago. Four-point-two million dollars. A wire transfer to a Manhattan real estate holding company. I pulled up the property records in another tab. A condo in SoHo. The address matched Poppy's.

My grandfather bought that woman her home.

I kept scrolling.

A charge at La Perla. Two thousand dollars.

A charge at the Baccarat Hotel. Three nights. Presidential suite.

A charge at a pharmacy on Spring Street. Forty-seven dollars and change. I clicked into the itemized receipt because I had to know. Condoms. Two boxes.

My grandfather's money. Bought condoms. So my husband could sleep with another woman in a bed my grandfather had paid for.

I set the coffee cup down very carefully so it wouldn't rattle.

I sat there a long time. The sky outside the window began to lift toward gray. A garbage truck groaned down the avenue. Somewhere a dog barked.

I didn't cry. I didn't move. I looked at the numbers on the screen until they stopped being numbers and became something else. A ledger. An indictment. A map of everything I would take back.

At six, I picked up my phone.

"Serena," I said when she answered. My voice was calm. Almost pleasant. "We're filing a lawsuit. Today. Against Poppy Medina. I want every cent."

A pause. Then: "Cecilia. Are you sure?"

I looked at the screen. At my grandfather's name at the top of the account. At what had been done in his name.

"I've never been more sure of anything in my life."

I hung up and pulled off my gloves. My palm was crusted with dried blood where my thumbnail had gone through the skin.

I didn't wipe it away.
