Chapter 3

The hotel room was small. Two beds with thin floral comforters. A window that looked out onto a brick wall. A radiator that clanked every few minutes. It smelled like industrial detergent and old carpet.

I didn't care.

It was the first place in seven years that was mine.

I carried Adalee to the bed nearest the window. She was already half-asleep, her head heavy on my shoulder, her rabbit tucked under one arm. I laid her down gently and pulled the covers up to her chin. She stirred, just a little.

"Mama?"

"I'm right here, baby."

"Are we home?"

I smoothed her hair back from her forehead. "We're safe. That's better."

She nodded and closed her eyes.

I sat on the edge of her bed and sang. Softly. The song I sang every night, the one about stars and dreams and morning coming soon. My voice cracked on the second verse. I kept going. By the third, her breathing had evened out. She was asleep.

I stayed there for a while, just watching her. Her face in sleep looked younger. Lighter. Like she'd set something down.

Finally, I stood. I walked to the other bed and sat. The room was so quiet I could hear the hum of the vending machine in the hallway. No TV blaring from Faith's room. No Vincent's footsteps in the hall. No Giselle's laugh from my bedroom.

Just silence.

I started shaking.

Not crying. Just shaking. My hands first, then my arms, then my whole body. I wrapped my arms around myself and sat there on the edge of the bed and shook like I was freezing. Maybe I was. Maybe I'd been cold for seven years and I was only just now feeling it.

I don't know how long it lasted. Five minutes. Ten. Eventually it stopped. My hands steadied. My breathing slowed.

I looked at my phone on the nightstand.

I picked it up.

I scrolled to the contact I hadn't called in months. The one I'd avoided out of pride, out of shame, out of the exhausting work of pretending everything was fine.

Mom.

I pressed call.

It rang once.

Twice.

On the third ring, she answered.

"Riley?" Her voice was sharp, alert. It was past midnight in Seattle. She'd been asleep. But she didn't sound groggy. She sounded like she'd been waiting.

"Mom," I said. My voice came out smaller than I meant it to. "Mom, I—"

"What happened."

Not a question. A command. The lawyer voice. The one that cut through noise and got to the truth.

I opened my mouth. For a second, nothing came out. Seven years of "I'm fine" and "Everything's good" and "Don't worry about me" sat in my throat like a stone.

Then it broke.

"He never loved me," I said. "He married me because I was from out of state. Because I didn't have family here. Because he needed someone to take care of his mother and he knew I couldn't fight back."

Silence on the other end. Not empty. Listening.

"He's been sending money to another woman for years. Giselle. His childhood sweetheart. Tens of thousands of dollars. Maybe hundreds of thousands. Private school for her daughter. Vacations. A condo. He bought her daughter a condo, Mom. As a wedding gift. While Adalee wears hand-me-downs and got a fifty-dollar gift card for Christmas."

My voice cracked. I kept going.

"She showed up tonight. Giselle. At the apartment. And he let her in. He told me to give her our bedroom. He told me to sleep on the couch. In my own home. And I just—"

I stopped. Swallowed.

"I took Adalee and I left. I'm at a hotel. I have about two thousand dollars. I don't know what to do next. I don't know how to—"

"Stop."

Madeleine's voice was quiet. Steady. The kind of steady that holds things up.

"Don't move. Don't sign anything. Don't speak to him. Don't go back to that apartment unless I'm with you. Do you understand?"

"Yes."

"We're coming."

"Mom, you don't have to—"

"We're coming."

I heard movement on her end. A lamp clicking on. Footsteps.

"Is Adalee with you?"

"Yes. She's asleep."

"Good. Keep her close. I'm going to cancel my court schedule. Your father is booking flights right now. We'll be there by morning."

"Mom—"

"He's going to lose everything, Riley." Her voice was still quiet. But there was something underneath it now. Something cold and sharp and absolutely certain. "And he's going to agree to it. Do you have evidence?"

"Photos. Of his financial records. A ledger. Everything."

"Send them to me. Now. Then try to sleep. We'll handle the rest."

I heard my father's voice in the background, low and calm. Asking a question I couldn't make out. Then Madeleine again.

"Your father says he loves you. And that Vincent Perry just made the worst mistake of his life."

Something in my chest loosened. Not relief. Not yet. But something close.

"I love you too," I whispered.

"We'll see you in a few hours. Don't open the door for anyone but us."

She hung up.

I sat there holding the phone. Then I opened the photos app and sent every single image of Vincent's ledger to my mother's email. Forty-three photographs. Seven years of theft in black and white.

When the last one sent, I set the phone down.

I looked over at Adalee. Still asleep. Still safe.

I lay down on the bed, fully clothed, and closed my eyes.

For the first time in seven years, I wasn't alone.

And for the first time in seven years, I slept.
