Chapter 1

Three days before Christmas, I spent the afternoon at the mall with Adalee, looking at the toy displays through the glass. She pressed her mittened hands against the window and pointed at a dollhouse with tiny furniture inside. "Maybe Santa will bring it," she said softly. I nodded and squeezed her hand. I didn't tell her that Santa had a budget of about thirty dollars this year, same as last year, same as the year before that.

We walked home through the cold. Adalee wore a hand-me-down sweater from a neighbor's daughter — pale pink with a small stain near the collar I'd tried to scrub out. It was clean. It was warm. It was free. That was what mattered in our house.

On Christmas Eve, I spent three hours in the kitchen preparing roast chicken with herb butter, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans almondine. The apartment filled with the smell of rosemary and browned butter. I set the table with the good plates, the ones we only used for holidays. Adalee sat at the kitchen table with her crayons, drawing a card for her father. She used every color in the box. She wrote "I LOVE YOU DADDY" in careful, crooked letters and drew a family holding hands — four stick figures, one in a wheelchair.

"Is Grandma Faith going to like dinner?" Adalee asked.

"I hope so, sweetheart," I said. I always hoped. It never mattered.

Vincent came home at seven-thirty, later than he'd promised. He set his briefcase by the door and barely glanced at the table. Adalee jumped up with her card, holding it out with both hands like an offering.

"Merry Christmas, Daddy! I made this for you!"

Vincent took the card without looking at it. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small plastic gift card in a sleeve — no wrapping, no box, just the card itself. He handed it to her.

"Here. Fifty dollars. You can buy something you want."

Adalee stared at the card. Her smile didn't disappear, but it changed. It got smaller. Tighter. She looked up at Vincent like she was waiting for something more — a hug, a word, anything — but he was already turning toward the hallway.

"I have a call," he said. "Eat without me."

He disappeared into his study and closed the door.

Adalee sat back down at the table. She set the gift card next to her plate and picked up her crayons again. She didn't say anything. I wanted to tell her it was okay, that Daddy was just busy, that he loved her even if he didn't show it the way she needed. But the words stuck in my throat. I didn't believe them anymore.

"Your card is beautiful," I said instead. "The best one I've ever seen."

She nodded and kept coloring.

I served dinner to Faith first, the way I always did. She took one bite of the chicken and made a face.

"Dry," she said. "You overcooked it."

I hadn't. But I nodded and said I'd do better next time.

After dinner, I cleaned the kitchen while Adalee watched a Christmas movie in the living room. The TV light flickered against the walls. I scrubbed the roasting pan and thought about the fifty-dollar gift card. Fifty dollars for his daughter. On Christmas.

That was when I saw it.

Vincent's phone was on the counter, face-up. The screen lit with a notification. I wasn't trying to look. I just saw it.

**Bank Alert: Wire Transfer Completed. $20,000 to Zariah Romero Trust Account.**

I read it twice.

Twenty thousand dollars.

Zariah Romero.

I knew that name. I'd heard it once or twice over the years, always in passing, always in a tone that suggested I shouldn't ask questions. Giselle Romero's daughter. Vincent's childhood friend. The woman he still talked to sometimes, the one whose name made him smile in a way that had nothing to do with me.

Twenty thousand dollars.

Fifty dollars.

I set down the dish towel. My hands were shaking. I picked up the phone and opened the notification before I could stop myself. The transfer was dated today. Christmas Eve. The memo line said: *Future planning.*

I put the phone back on the counter exactly where it had been. I walked into the living room and sat next to Adalee on the couch. She leaned against me, warm and small and trusting. On the TV, animated characters sang about snow and miracles.

I wrapped my arm around her and stared at the screen without seeing it.

Something deep inside me — something I'd been holding together with silence and patience and the belief that it would get better — cracked open. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just a quiet, structural break, like ice splitting under weight.

I didn't cry. I didn't move.

I just sat there with my daughter and felt the truth settle into my bones.

This was never going to get better.

And I was done pretending it would.
