Chapter 3

I went back to the magazine on a Monday.

I told myself it was professional. I told myself I was not hiding. I put on a good coat and good shoes and I walked through the revolving door like a woman who had somewhere to be.

For six days, I kept my head down. I edited copy. I filed notes. I did the work because the work was the one thing in that building that had always been genuinely mine.

On the seventh day, the Editor-in-Chief's assistant called my extension.

Same office. Same chair across from his desk. Same folded hands, same window he looked at instead of me.

"There's been a restructuring," he said. His voice was careful. The voice of a man who had practiced this. "The senior editor position is being eliminated. We do have a junior editorial role available, if you'd like to—"

"Stop."

He stopped.

I looked at him for a long moment. The radiator ticked. Outside, someone honked twice on Fifth.

"I think we both know what this is," I said.

His mouth opened. His eyes went to the window.

That was the only answer I needed.

I stood up. I did not thank him for his time. I had done that once already, and once was already more than he deserved.

I walked back through the floor to get my things.

Ivanna was at my desk.

Not visiting it. Not passing it. At it. Her bag was open on the chair. A small framed photo was already on the corner—some staged candid of her at a party, laughing at nothing. She had moved my nameplate to the edge and replaced it with her own in a brushed gold font.

She looked up when she heard my heels. Her expression did the thing it always did—a half-second of readiness before settling into something softer, something almost sympathetic, designed for an audience.

"Allie," she said.

I picked up my notebook from the side table. My pen. My coat off the hook by the door.

I didn't look at her directly. I looked at the desk. My desk, for four years. The window behind it that caught the afternoon light just right in October. The small scratch on the left corner where I had set down a stapler too hard during a deadline week in 2021.

Then I looked at her.

"A throne built on a man's favor," I said, "collapses the moment he looks away." I let that land. "You'll learn that. Sooner than you think."

I walked out.

I did not look back. I have made a practice of that.

The weeks after were the hardest.

Not because I doubted the choice. I never doubted the choice. But there is a difference between knowing you are free and knowing what to do with the freedom.

I sent resumes. I took meetings in coffee shops and borrowed conference rooms and once, memorably, a rooftop in Tribeca where the wind kept stealing my notes. Some people were interested. Some people had already heard things—the kind of things that travel fast in a city where everyone knows someone who works for someone whose ad budget runs through Howard Enterprises.

I did not ask who made those calls. I already knew.

At three in the morning I lay on my back in the West Village apartment and I catalogued. Every signal I had rationalized. Every night I had waited up. Every box I had opened and set aside and told myself meant something other than what it meant. The Tiffany. The Cartier. The Van Cleef. The Harry Winston. The Bulgari, still in the dark of a drawer I would never open again.

I did not reach out to him. I did not check his accounts. I did not drive past the building.

I allowed myself the nights. I did not allow myself the retreat.

During the days I brewed my coffee black and sat at my small desk and kept moving. I pitched three pieces on spec. I rewrote my portfolio intro four times. I straightened the notebooks on my shelf and caught myself doing it and left them slightly crooked on purpose, just to see if I could stand it.

I could.

One Tuesday evening I was sitting on the floor with my back against the wall—my preferred thinking position, which I had stopped being embarrassed about—when my phone buzzed.

Rachel Park. Former colleague. She had left the magazine eight months ago for something she called scrappy and real, and she had looked happier at every coffee since.

The text was short.

*I know someone who needs exactly you. Call me tomorrow.*

I read it twice.

Outside, the saxophone was back—the same one from down the block, still a little out of tune, still somehow exactly right.

I set the phone face-up on the floor beside me and looked at the slice of sky through the window.

Small. But there.

I picked up my notebook and wrote one line at the top of a clean page.

*Call Rachel.*

Then I capped the pen and let myself breathe.
