Chapter 5

Rachel arrives at six.

I'm already dressed when she knocks—black Valentino, hair back, the smartwatch on my left wrist. I haven't slept. I didn't try. I spent the night at the desk with the window open and the city noise coming in, going through the documents one last time the way a surgeon checks instruments before the first cut. Not because I'm uncertain. Because precision matters.

Diana is asleep on the sofa with a throw blanket pulled to her chin. She looks young like that. She looks the way she did before I made all the choices that brought us here.

I don't wake her.

Rachel sets her briefcase on the dining table and opens it. Three folders, color-coded, each one a different kind of ending.

"Walk me through it," I say.

She doesn't waste time. "First folder: original incorporation certificate with your sole signature on the founding line, the county clerk's record of Cooper's failed transfer attempt, and the board minutes showing he never had legal authority to act unilaterally. Second folder: divorce filing, zero-asset demand, full liability assignment for the two-point-one million." She taps the third folder. "Third: the reassigned promissory notes, Marcus's transaction log, and the certified copies of the original loan agreement. Everything notarized. Everything timestamped."

I pick up each folder and check the tabs. Set them back down in order.

"The process server," I say.

"Already positioned. He'll be in the third row, left side, press credential. The moment you serve Cooper on camera, he moves in and makes it official." Rachel pauses. "My team has the exits covered. If Violet tries to leave before the filing is complete, we have someone at every door."

I nod.

"Your security detail will be in the room before you arrive. Two by the stage, one by the main entrance." She looks at me. "Savannah. If your heart—"

"My heart is fine."

She holds my gaze for a moment. Then she nods once and closes the briefcase.

I look at the smartwatch. Resting heart rate: sixty-one. The steadiest number I've seen in five years. My body knows something my mind has only just caught up to—that what I'm walking into today is not a crisis. It's a correction.

I pick up the three folders and slide them into my briefcase.

---

The town car is waiting at seven-fifteen. I get in. The driver pulls into traffic and the city opens up around us, gray and cold and indifferent the way New York always is, the way I used to find exhausting and now find clarifying.

We're on Fifth Avenue when my phone rings.

Cooper.

I watch his name on the screen for two full rings. Then I let it go to voicemail.

A minute later, the notification appears. I put one earbud in and press play.

*Savannah.* His voice is smooth. Measured. The voice he uses in board meetings when he wants to sound reasonable. *I just want you to think carefully before today. I know you're upset. I understand that. But whatever you're planning—whatever Rachel has talked you into—I want you to consider your position. You've been under a lot of stress. Your health has been fragile. The last thing either of us needs is something embarrassing in a public setting.* A pause. *I'm giving you the chance to handle this privately. Like adults. Call me back.*

The message ends.

I take the earbud out.

He still thinks I'm fragile. He still thinks the hospital stay broke something in me that hasn't healed. He's been operating on that assumption for two weeks—the silence, the unanswered texts, the rejected settlement offer. To him, all of it reads as a woman too damaged to fight back.

He has mistaken my quiet for surrender.

He has always mistaken my quiet for surrender.

I open my phone, go to the voicemail, and delete it.

Not because it made me angry. Because it doesn't matter. Because the man who left that message is about to stand in front of two hundred people and hand away forty percent of a company that has never belonged to him, and he has no idea that I will be in that room.

He has no idea what quiet looks like when it finally decides to speak.

The car turns onto Central Park South. The park is bare and silver in the morning light. Ahead, the Mandarin Oriental rises against the sky, flags moving in the wind off the river.

I check the smartwatch one more time.

Sixty beats per minute. Steady as a metronome.

I pick up my briefcase. I straighten my jacket. I look out the window at the city I built my life in—the city that watched me sacrifice everything and said nothing, the city that is about to watch me take it all back.

The car stops.

I get out.
