Chapter 2

Rachel Hsu arrives at the private medical suite at 8:47 PM. I know the exact time because I'm staring at the clock when she walks in—a woman in a charcoal suit with a legal pad in one hand and a briefcase that requires a fingerprint to open in the other. She doesn't ask how I'm feeling. She doesn't need to. The monitors are still tracking my heart's irregular rhythm, but my face must tell her everything she needs to know.

"I've been waiting for this call for five years," she says, setting her briefcase on the visitor's chair and pressing her thumb to the scanner. The lock clicks open with a sound like a gun being cocked. "I told you he was going to try something eventually. You didn't listen."

I don't apologize. Rachel has never been the kind of person who wants apologies. She wants action.

"Show me," I say.

She spreads the documents across my bed—original incorporation certificates, transfer agreements, board minutes, tax filings. Her manicured finger traces the signature line on the founding documents. My signature. Only my signature. The company was mine before it was ever his.

"He never properly executed the transfer under New York corporate law," Rachel says, her voice clinical and precise. "The paperwork he filed was incomplete. He missed three required signatures, including the notarized witness. It's sitting in the county clerk's office, technically invalid. He was too lazy to follow up."

I remember that day. Cooper had come home with a bottle of champagne and a stack of papers. "Just some routine corporate housekeeping," he'd said. "For tax purposes." I'd signed where he told me to sign, trusting him the way a woman who believes in love trusts the man she marries.

"Can you fix it?" I ask.

"No," Rachel says, and I see the first real smile on her face. "I can make it right. I can file a preliminary ownership challenge before dawn. By the time he realizes what's happening, it'll be too late."

She works through the night. I watch her write, her pen moving across the legal pad in sharp, decisive strokes. The woman who sent me that invoice is sleeping in my guest suite. The woman who stole my son is being called "Mommy." But here, in this sterile room with the beeping monitors, I'm building something new.

Marcus Webb joins us at 2 AM. He looks like he's been awake for days, which is exactly what I'm paying him for. He's the kind of forensic accountant who finds beauty in patterns others can't see—the man who can read a financial statement the way a crime novelist reads a murder scene.

"I need everything," I tell him. "Every transaction, every transfer, every hotel receipt. I need to know where he spent my money."

Marcus nods. He doesn't waste words. He sets up his laptop on the small table by the window and begins to work. I watch his fingers move across the keyboard, summoning data from the digital ether like a necromancer raising ghosts.

"Venmo," he says after eighteen minutes. "He was sloppy. Used his personal account. Thought small transfers wouldn't trigger flags. First one was five years ago. Five thousand dollars. Then another. Then another."

He turns the screen toward me. There they are—hundreds of transactions, each one a small knife in my chest. Five thousand here. Ten thousand there. Hotel charges. Airfare. A diamond bracelet from Tiffany's. A weekend in the Hamptons. All while I was working eighty-hour weeks to keep our company afloat.

"Keep going," I say.

By morning, Marcus has catalogued over three hundred transactions. Each one timestamped. Each one evidence. The sun comes up over Manhattan, painting the hospital room in gold light, and for the first time in years I feel something like hope.

Back at the penthouse, they're celebrating what they think is my surrender. Eleanor is supervising the redecoration of the master bedroom, Violet's clothes moving from the guest suite to the closet where mine used to hang. Cooper is giving Violet a company credit card, introducing her to board members as his "strategic partner." They think they've won.

They don't know that while they're measuring drapes, Rachel Hsu is filing legal challenges that will strip Cooper of every asset he thinks is his. They don't know that Marcus Webb is building a case that will expose every dollar Cooper funneled to Violet. They don't know that I'm sitting in a hospital room, my heart finally beating in the right rhythm, planning the systematic destruction of everything they've built on the ruins of my life.

The monitors beep steadily now. My heart is calm. My resolve is absolute. In three days, Cooper will hold a press conference at the Mandarin Oriental to announce Violet's new position. In three days, I'll be there to remind him who really owns this company.
