Chapter 3

I found out from my phone.

I was in the back of a cab heading uptown, the city gray and close outside the window, when the notifications started coming in. One. Then three. Then too many to count. I opened the first one because I didn't know yet that I shouldn't.

Miriam was on a small raised platform in what looked like a gallery space, her eyes wet and her voice carefully unsteady. A reporter I recognized from a trade publication was leaning toward her with the particular softness journalists perform when they've already decided who the victim is.

'I just want to make my work,' Miriam was saying. 'That's all I've ever wanted. But when someone with those kinds of connections decides you're a threat—' She stopped. Pressed her lips together. Let the silence do its work. 'I don't know what I did to deserve this.'

The reporter nodded. The camera lingered on Miriam's face.

I closed the app. Opened it again. Closed it.

Outside, the cab stopped at a red light on Fifty-Seventh. A woman on the sidewalk was struggling with an umbrella the wind had turned inside out. She looked furious. I watched her wrestle it back into shape and keep walking.

I opened my messages. Virginia had sent seven in a row, the last one just a string of punctuation. I didn't have the words to answer her yet.

Then the other thing started.

I saw it first in a comment thread, then in a post, then in four posts, then in a screenshot being shared so fast it had already lost its original source. The story was clean and consistent the way only coordinated things are. Scout Cooper had slept her way into Professor Andrews's program. Everyone in the department had known. Her marriage to Tate Snyder was a financial arrangement from the start—she had targeted him deliberately, a woman from nowhere leveraging a sick man's vulnerability into a penthouse and a corporate last name.

I read it the way you read something in a foreign language. The words were familiar but the person they described was not.

The cab pulled up to my building. I paid and got out and stood on the sidewalk for a moment with my phone in my hand and the cold coming in off the park.

Then my phone buzzed with a news alert. I read the headline. Then I read the statement beneath it.

Professor Andrews. Carefully worded. 'Stepping back from any professional association with Scout Cooper until the current allegations are properly examined.' Two sentences. The language of a man who had spent time choosing words that committed to nothing while sounding like principle.

I stood there on the sidewalk and waited to feel something break open.

Nothing did.

I looked up at the building. Then I closed the app and put my phone in my pocket and went inside.

---

He summoned me to the forty-third floor two days later.

Same conference room. Same glass table. Same cold light coming off the city.

Tate was standing this time, not seated. His back was to the room when I came in, hands in his pockets, looking out at Midtown the way he always did when he was about to say something he had already decided. Rhys was at his post near the door. No legal aides today. Whatever this was, it didn't require witnesses.

I sat down.

Tate turned. He looked rested. That was the first thing I noticed. Whatever was happening to my life had not cost him a single hour of sleep.

'Going forward,' he said, 'Miriam will serve as the public face of Snyder fashion ventures.'

I looked at my hands on the table.

'The current media environment requires a unified front. The coverage around her launch has momentum. It makes sense to consolidate behind it.' He paused. 'As my wife, your support in this would be—'

'Did she plagiarize my collection?'

The room went very still. At the door, Rhys didn't move.

Tate looked at me. That patient, administrative look. The one that had been explaining things to me for five years.

'Is that a real question?' I said. 'I'm asking you directly. You've seen both collections. You know my work. Did she take it?'

He was quiet for a moment. Not the quiet of someone considering. The quiet of someone deciding whether to bother.

'This conversation,' he said, 'is not productive.'

He picked up the folder on the table beside him and walked out.

Not quickly. Not with anger. Just—done. The door closed behind him with the soft, expensive click of a room that had been designed to absorb everything without echo.

I sat there.

Rhys was still at his post. I could feel him not looking at me, which was its own kind of looking.

I pressed my thumb slowly across my fingertips under the table. One. Then the next. Then the next.

I thought about the measuring wheel rolling along my studio wall. I thought about Kennedi's Oxford letter on the table, so clean and formal, her future held in both hands like a negotiating chip. I thought about Miriam's voice through the study door—she is everywhere lately—and Tate's answer arriving before she had even finished the sentence.

I'll handle it.

Professor Andrews stepping back. My accounts, already starting to show the first signs of pressure. Virginia's seven messages I still hadn't answered.

This was a particular kind of architecture. I could see the whole shape of it now. Each piece had looked like a separate thing—the studio acquisition, the media campaign, the statement from Andrews, this meeting. But they weren't separate. They were one continuous action, moving in one direction, and I was standing in the middle of it trying to identify individual bricks while the walls came in.

I stood up.

I smoothed my jacket. I picked up my bag.

When I passed Rhys at the door, he didn't hold it open this time. He just stood there with his hands at his sides, and for one brief second I felt him looking at me—actually looking, the way you look at someone when you want them to know something you can't say.

I didn't stop.

In the elevator going down, the city rose past the glass wall, floor by floor, indifferent and enormous and entirely unaware of what was being quietly taken from me in the room above it.

I stared at my own reflection in the steel door.

She stared back.

Not broken. Not even close.

Just—paying attention.
