Chapter 3

The powder room is empty when I push through the door. My hands are shaking. I turn on the cold water and hold my forearm under the stream. The skin is angry red. Small blisters are already forming along my wrist.

I don't make a sound.

I pull out my phone with my other hand. I photograph the burns from three angles. The lighting is good in here. The images are clear.

In the mirror, my face looks calm. That surprises me. I thought I would look different. I thought something this deliberate would leave a mark you could see.

I dry my hands carefully. I smooth down my dress. The coffee stain has set into the black fabric, darker and wet. I walk back out into the hallway.

The gala is still going. Music. Laughter. Through the ballroom doors I can see Angelique seated near the center of the room, pale and trembling, surrounded by concerned guests. Sterling's hand is on her shoulder.

I don't go back in.

I take a car home. Alone.

---

The society pages the next morning are kind. There is a photo of Sterling and Angelique, heads bent together in conversation. The caption reads: *Henderson Foundation Gala Raises Record Funds.* In the final paragraph, a single line: *Mrs. Leslie Henderson left the event early due to a minor wardrobe incident.*

I add the article to my file. Then I go to the clinic and have the burns documented. Second-degree. The attending physician asks if I want to file a report. I say no. Not yet.

I add the medical records to the file.

---

Two weeks pass.

Sterling is in London. Angelique is staying at the penthouse while he's gone—something about her apartment having plumbing issues. I don't ask. I stopped asking.

I drive to my mother's grave on a Tuesday afternoon. The cemetery is quiet. Old trees. The sound of wind through leaves.

I sit on the bench beside her headstone for two hours. I don't say anything. I don't cry. I just sit there and let the silence settle.

On the way home I stop at a café I've never been to before. I order coffee I don't drink. I open my notebook to a blank page.

My hand starts moving.

A dress silhouette. Clean lines. A collar that folds just so. A textile pattern—something with texture, weight, the kind of fabric that moves when you walk. I fill one page. Then another. Then a third.

I haven't sketched since college. I didn't realize until this moment how much I've been missing. How much of myself I left behind when I became Mrs. Henderson.

I close the notebook. I finish my coffee. I drive home.

The sketches stay with me. In my head. In my hands. Like something waking up.

---

I come home three days later to find Angelique in my study.

She's standing by the bookshelf. The one near the window. The door was closed when I left this morning. I know because I always close it.

She turns when she hears me. She's holding something.

My mother's doll.

The handmade one. Stitched by hand in the months before she died. Faded fabric. Uneven seams. The only thing I have left that her hands touched.

'Oh,' Angelique says softly. She looks down at the doll in her hands. 'I was just tidying up. I thought this was trash. It looked so old.'

I don't move. I'm standing in the doorway. My purse is still on my shoulder.

'Put it down,' I say.

Angelique tilts her head. She looks at me for a long moment. Then she smiles.

It's not the soft, trembling smile she uses in public. It's something else. Something flat and precise.

She grips the doll at the seams. She pulls.

The fabric tears. Slowly. Deliberately. Her eyes stay locked on mine the entire time.

The stuffing spills out. White and soft. It falls across the floor like snow.

She tears again. The head comes loose. Then an arm. She drops the pieces one by one onto my desk.

'Oops,' she whispers.

I stand there. I watch the pieces fall. I watch her face. I don't say anything.

Something inside me doesn't break. It clarifies.

Angelique sets the last piece down. She smooths her skirt. She walks past me toward the door. She pauses in the doorway.

'Sterling will be home tomorrow,' she says. 'I'll tell him you've been having a hard time. He worries about you, you know.'

She leaves.

I walk to my desk. I look down at the torn fabric. The scattered stuffing. My mother's hands made this. In a hospital room. While she was dying.

I pick up my phone. I text Diana Welles.

*Now.*
