Chapter 3

The vitamins were different.

I noticed on a Tuesday morning. The bottle was the same brand. Same label. But the pills inside were pale green instead of white. Smaller. They smelled like dried flowers.

I held one up to the light. Turned it between my fingers.

"Those are better for you."

I turned. Charli stood in the doorway of the kitchen. White linen dress. Bare feet. She looked like she had just finished meditating.

"Where are my prenatal vitamins?"

"Those are prenatal vitamins." She crossed to the counter and poured herself tea from the pot I had made. "Just more aligned. Spiritually. The synthetic ones you were taking—they're so harsh on the body. These are plant-based. Organic. I researched it."

I set the pill down. "My doctor prescribed the other ones."

"Dr. Vasquez is wonderful. But she's trained in Western medicine. There's so much she doesn't see." Charli sipped her tea. Steam curled between us. "Trust me, Elyse. This is what's best for the baby."

The baby. Not my baby. The baby.

I looked at the pale green pill. My hand went to my stomach. Thirteen weeks now. A plum. A fist.

"I want to talk to Khai."

"Of course." She smiled. "He's upstairs."

---

Khai was in his office. Laptop open. He did not look up when I knocked.

"The vitamins," I said. "Charli changed them."

"I know."

"I need the ones Dr. Vasquez prescribed."

He closed the laptop. Leaned back in his chair. "Charli spent three days researching supplements. She consulted with a nutritionist. A holistic practitioner. She's trying to help you."

"I don't need help. I need my prescription."

"Your medical paranoia is becoming tiresome."

The words landed flat. Like he had said them before. Practiced them.

I stepped closer. "Khai. Please. Just let me take what the doctor—"

"Charli knows what she's doing." He opened the laptop again. "Take the vitamins she gave you. We're done here."

I stood in the doorway. My throat felt tight. Not from allergies. From something else.

I touched the inside of my left wrist. Bare skin.

I turned and left.

---

Dr. Vasquez noticed the bruises first.

I was lying on the exam table. The gel was cold on my stomach. The ultrasound wand pressed down and the heartbeat filled the room. Fast and strong. A galloping.

"Everything looks good," she said. Then she paused. Her eyes moved to my wrist. "How did you get that?"

I looked down. A shadow of purple along the bone. I had not even noticed.

"I don't know. I bruise easy."

She did not say anything. She moved the wand. Checked the measurements. Printed the images. When she handed them to me, her fingers brushed mine.

"Are you safe at home, Elyse?"

The question hung in the air. I felt the weight of it. The way it opened a door I had been keeping shut.

"Yes."

She watched me for a long moment. Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out a card. Plain white. A phone number written in blue ink. Nothing else.

"This is my private line," she said quietly. "If you need anything. Any time."

I took the card. Folded it. Slipped it into my coat pocket.

"Thank you."

She squeezed my hand. Just once. "I've been documenting."

I looked up.

"The bruising," she said. "The stress markers in your bloodwork. The weight loss. I've been documenting all of it."

Something in my chest cracked. Not broke. Just cracked. A little.

"Okay," I whispered.

She nodded. "Call me. Please."

---

I called her three days later.

Charli had taken me to the pharmacy. She needed her supplements. Her adaptogens. Her tinctures in amber glass bottles. She told me to wait by the counter while she browsed.

I saw the bathroom sign. I walked toward it. Slow. Casual.

Inside, I locked the door. Pulled out the card. My hands were shaking.

I dialed.

She answered on the second ring. "This is Dr. Vasquez."

"It's Elyse." My voice came out too quiet. I cleared my throat. "It's Elyse Powell."

A pause. Then: "Are you safe right now?"

"I'm in a pharmacy bathroom. I have maybe ten minutes."

"Tell me."

So I did. The forced champagne. The vitamin substitution. The way Charli watches me. The way Khai does not. The third floor. The stolen bracelet. The IVF. The way I am a vessel and nothing more.

I said it all in a whisper. Fast. Like if I stopped I would not start again.

When I finished, there was silence.

Then Dr. Vasquez said: "I've been documenting for weeks. The bruising. The signs of coercion. The stress on your body. I have enough to make a case. But Elyse—" She stopped. "Is there someone who can help you? Someone you trust?"

I closed my eyes. Saw Brody's face. The way he had carried me out of the gala. The EpiPen already in his hand.

"Yes," I said. "Brody."

"Good." Her voice was steady. Certain. "I'm going to contact him. We're going to get you out."

Someone knocked on the bathroom door.

"Elyse?" Charli's voice. Bright. Concerned. "You okay in there, honey?"

I flushed the toilet. Ran the water. "I'm fine."

"Okay. Take your time."

I looked at myself in the mirror. Pale. Thin. A stranger.

I touched my stomach. The plum. The fist.

"I have to go," I whispered into the phone.

"I'll call him tonight," Dr. Vasquez said. "Hold on, Elyse. Just hold on."

I hung up. Slipped the phone back into my pocket. Opened the door.

Charli was waiting. She smiled. Tilted her head. Left.

"Ready?"

I nodded.

We walked out together into the cold.
