After My Husband Drugged Me Chapter 1

The tablet lit up on the kitchen island a little after nine.

I wasn't looking for it. I was rinsing out a wine glass, one of the good ones Nathan liked, and the screen glow caught the corner of my eye. A single notification, bright against the dark marble.

Paloma Salazar.

I knew the name. She was Nathan's research partner at the university, twenty-nine, sharp cheekbones, a laugh I'd only ever heard from across a lecture hall. He'd introduced us once at a faculty dinner. She'd shaken my hand like she was doing me a favor.

I dried my hands on the dish towel. I told myself I would just close the notification.

Instead, I read the message.

"Miss you. Can't wait until she's gone and this is just us. Our place, our bed, no more sneaking around. Soon, baby."

The glass was still in my other hand. I set it down carefully on the counter, the way you set down something breakable when your fingers have stopped trusting themselves.

The tablet was unlocked. I scrolled.

Weeks of messages. Months. She called him "my love." He called her "mi cielo." They talked about the apartment they wanted in Tribeca. They talked about a trip to Lisbon in the fall. They talked about me the way people talk about a slow leak in a ceiling. Annoying. Manageable. Soon repaired.

"When she's gone."

He kept using that phrase. Not "when I tell her." Not "when we divorce." When she's gone. Like I was weather.

I don't know how long I stood there. The refrigerator hummed. The city hummed nineteen floors below. My own pulse was the loudest thing in the room, and even that was quiet.

I didn't cry. I noticed, distantly, that I didn't want to.

I turned off the screen and walked down the hallway to Nathan's home office.

The door was locked. It had been locked for months. He'd told me the cleaning crew mishandled his papers once, that it was easier this way. I'd believed him because believing him was the shape my days had taken.

I found a butter knife in the kitchen. It took maybe three minutes to work the bottom drawer of his desk. The wood splintered a little near the runner. I didn't care.

Inside was a black lab notebook. His handwriting on the spine, that clean engineered slant I used to trace with my finger in bed while he slept.

I opened it.

**Compound MR-17.**

The first page was chemistry. I understood enough. A memory-suppression compound. Selective. Targeted at emotional-associative recall. Developed in his own lab, off the record.

The second page was a dosage schedule. Two milligrams daily, escalating monthly. Delivered orally.

The third page was me.

**Subject: S.P., F, 34, cohabitating spouse. Delivery vector: multivitamin capsule, replaced 6:47 AM daily.**

He had columns. Observation columns. "Subject affect stable." "Subject reports mild fatigue Day 12." "Subject failed to recall Santorini honeymoon detail, Day 34—confirmed erosion of episodic pair-bond memory."

And at the bottom of the most recent page, in the shorthand he used when he was pleased with himself:

**Subject shows no suspicion. Timeline on track.**

I sat down in his leather chair.

I wasn't his wife. I hadn't been his wife in a long time. I was Subject. I was a column of tidy observations in a locked drawer.

Seven years.

Seven years of ironed shirts and canceled interviews and his mother's hand in mine while she coughed blood into a bowl. Seven years of learning to drink my coffee at whatever temperature he left it. Seven years of shrinking so his light could look bigger.

And this was the exit he'd designed for me. Not a conversation. Not even a lie big enough to respect. A chemical. A slow, quiet unmaking, so he could keep his reputation and his mistress and his clean conscience while what was left of me wandered off like a stray.

I closed the notebook.

Margaret's voice came up from somewhere under my ribs. My mother-in-law, dry-lipped, her fingers thin as reeds around mine. *If my son ever makes you feel the way his father made me feel, you leave. You don't look back. Promise me.*

I'd promised. I'd buried the promise. Now I dug it up with my bare hands.

I sat in his chair until the sky outside went from black to the color of dirty milk. I didn't call my father. I didn't call a lawyer. I didn't cry, still. Crying felt like a thing that belonged to a woman who hadn't decided yet.

I had decided.

I would take every pill. Every single one. He wanted to erase his wife's love? Fine. I would use his own poison to cut the last root myself, on my own schedule, with my own hand on the knife. And when the last thread snapped, I would walk out of this apartment as a stranger to him. Not broken. Not begging. Gone.

At 6:44 AM, I heard the shower turn off.

I put the notebook back. I closed the drawer. I sat at the kitchen island in my robe and poured two coffees, one with cream for him, one black for me—the way he'd never once remembered.

He came down at 6:47. Pressed white shirt. Wet hair combed back. That smile he'd been practicing at me for weeks, the one that didn't quite reach the corners.

"Morning, sweetheart." He slid the vitamin bottle across the marble. "Don't forget."

I looked at him. Really looked.

I took the capsule between my fingers. I placed it on my tongue. I swallowed with a small sip of water, and I held his eyes the entire time.

His smile held. Steady. Unsuspecting.

He kissed the top of my head on his way out.

The door clicked shut behind him, and I smiled for the first time in ten hours.
