Chapter 1

My phone rings at eleven forty-three on a Tuesday night.

I'm at my desk in our Upper East Side apartment, spreadsheet open, coffee gone cold. The ringtone cuts through the silence like a blade. I don't recognize the number, but something in my chest tightens before I even swipe to answer.

"Sienna?" The voice is breathless, shaking. It's Marco — the groundskeeper at Greenwood Cemetery, a man who knew my mother, who always nods when I visit on the third of every month. "You need to come. Now. Someone's at your mother's vault."

The world tilts.

"What do you mean someone's—"

"They're opening it. They have tools. I called the police, but you need to come now."

I'm already moving. Coat. Keys. Wallet. My hands don't shake. I flag a cab on Madison Avenue, and the driver asks where to, and I say Greenwood Cemetery, and he gives me a look in the rearview mirror but doesn't argue.

I tell myself it's vandals. A bureaucratic error. Anything but the thing my body already knows.

The cab pulls up to the service gate. It's unlocked. Hanging open.

I pay without counting the bills and step onto the gravel path. The cemetery is silent except for the hum of industrial work lights blazing white against the darkness. I follow the glow.

My mother's vault is marble. Simple. Elegant. Her name is engraved in letters I traced with my fingertips a hundred times: Margaret Morales. Beloved Mother.

Two men in coveralls stand in front of it with power tools. A white van idles on the access road, engine running. The lights are so bright I have to squint.

And standing among them, phone pressed to his ear, calm as if he's overseeing a kitchen renovation, is my husband.

Chase.

I don't remember crossing the distance. I throw myself between the workers and the stone, palms flat against the cold marble, and I scream.

"What are you doing?"

Chase lowers his phone. He looks at me the way you'd look at a child interrupting an important meeting.

"Sienna. You need to calm down."

"Calm down?" My voice cracks. "This is my mother's grave. What the hell are you doing?"

One of the workers steps back, uncertain. The other glances at Chase, waiting for direction.

Chase sighs. He pockets his phone and walks toward me with that easy, authoritative stride — the walk of a man who has never been told no in a way that stuck.

"Lainey wanted to understand," he says. His tone is patient. Reasonable. "She wanted to see the woman who saved my life. It's a tribute, Sienna. That's all."

I stare at him.

The words don't make sense. They're in English, but they don't assemble into meaning.

"A tribute," I repeat.

Chase nods. "She was curious. She wanted to—"

"This is the woman who gave you her bone marrow." My voice is flat now. Cold. "The woman who destroyed her immune system so you wouldn't die of leukemia. The woman who was dead two years later because of what she did for you."

Chase's jaw tightens. "I know that."

"And you're opening her grave because Lainey was curious."

He doesn't answer. He doesn't stop the workers.

Something inside me breaks.

Not loudly. Not dramatically. It's quiet. Final. Like a bone snapping cleanly in two.

I can't breathe.

The air won't come. My chest is too tight. The lights are too bright. My knees buckle, and I slide down the marble, palms scraping stone, and the last thing I see before my vision whites out is Chase's face — not panicked, not horrified, just irritated.

I wake up in an ambulance.

A paramedic is checking my pulse. Someone is saying hyperventilation, shock, possible panic attack. I close my eyes and let them take me.

The hospital room is white. Sterile. The fluorescent lights hum. I lie on the thin mattress and stare at the ceiling tiles, counting them, because if I stop counting I will have to feel the full weight of what just happened.

My mother saved his life.

And he opened her grave for another woman.

I breathe in. Hold. Breathe out.

By the time the attending physician comes to check on me, my face is calm.

A nurse stops by an hour later. She's kind. She asks if I need anything. Then she hesitates.

"Your husband is down the hall," she says carefully. "With another patient. A woman with a sprained ankle."

I don't ask questions. I know.

I request my discharge paperwork. I sign it. I walk out of the hospital in my coat and yesterday's clothes, and I take a cab back to Greenwood Cemetery.

Marco is still there. The workers are gone. The vault is resealed, but the stone is scarred.

I kneel in the grass and place a single white chrysanthemum against the marble.

"I'm sorry," I whisper.

I don't cry. I've already cried enough for this marriage.

I stay until dawn.
