Chapter 2

My face burned. The crowd pressed tighter. I couldn't breathe.

Silas moved. Not fast. Just steady. He stepped between me and the woman, his hand raised slightly, palm out.

"That's enough," he said. His voice was quiet. It cut through the noise.

The woman — Solana, I would learn later, though right now she was just a stranger with my husband's photos on her phone — laughed in his face.

"Who the hell are you?"

Silas didn't flinch. "I'm Silas Dean. This is my wife, Genevieve. And Elliott is our daughter-in-law. She is married to our son, Cain Dean."

The words hung in the air for exactly two seconds.

Then someone in the crowd laughed.

"Sure, buddy," a man in a Yankees cap called out. "And I'm Jeff Bezos!"

More laughter. Scattered at first, then spreading like a wave.

Solana smirked. She looked Silas up and down — the plain linen shirt, the comfortable pants, the worn leather loafers. No logos. No flash. Just an old man in travel clothes.

"Dean Capital Group?" she said, her voice dripping with mockery. "The billionaire Deans? You?" She gestured at Genevieve. "Her?"

Genevieve's face didn't change. She stood beside Silas, one hand resting lightly on his arm. She looked like someone's grandmother. That was the point. That was always the point. They never wore their wealth. They didn't need to.

But the crowd didn't know that.

"Stop embarrassing yourselves," Solana said. She turned back to me. "I don't know what kind of scam you're running, but dragging these poor old people into it is disgusting."

The crowd murmured agreement. Phones were still up. Recording. I could see the red dots. The live streams.

Silas pressed two fingers to his temple. The gesture I'd seen a thousand times when he was thinking through a problem. When he was deciding how to move.

"Elliott is my daughter-in-law," he said again. Slower this time. Each word deliberate. "The Dean family stands behind her. Fully."

A woman near the front shook her head. "You can't just say you're rich and expect people to believe you."

"Yeah," someone else added. "Where's your security? Where's your entourage?"

Solana crossed her arms. "Exactly. If you were really the Deans, you wouldn't be standing here in Costco clothes trying to defend a stalker."

The crowd laughed again. Harder this time.

I looked at Silas. At Genevieve. At the two people who had loved me like their own child from the day I married Cain. Who had held me when my own mother passed. Who had called me every Sunday just to talk.

And the crowd was laughing at them.

My throat closed. I couldn't speak. Couldn't move.

Then I saw her.

Shay.

She was standing at the edge of the crowd, near the coffee kiosk. Our eyes met. Relief flooded through me so fast I almost sobbed.

Shay. Fifteen years. Fifteen years of friendship. She would fix this. She would tell them.

I reached for her. My hand stretched out.

"Shay," I said. My voice cracked. "Shay, please."

She stepped forward.

The crowd parted slightly to let her through.

She walked past me. Stopped beside Solana.

And then she turned to face the crowd.

"I'm Shay Moore," she said. Her voice was calm. Regretful. The voice of someone who didn't want to speak but felt morally obligated. "I've known Elliott for fifteen years."

I nodded. Yes. Yes, she would explain.

"And I've watched her do this for years," Shay continued.

The air left my lungs.

"She targets wealthy men," Shay said. She looked at the crowd, not at me. "She finds them at charity events. At galas. She's good at it. She makes them think she's different. That she's not like the other women."

No.

"I didn't want to say anything," Shay said. Her hand went to her collarbone. That small gesture I'd seen a thousand times and never catalogued. "She's my friend. Or she was. But I can't stay silent anymore."

The crowd erupted.

"I knew it!"

"Gold digger!"

"Someone call security!"

I staggered backward. My shoulder hit the counter. My vision blurred.

Shay's eyes met mine for just a second. There was nothing in them. No apology. No hesitation. Just a cold, flat certainty.

Someone near the front pulled out their phone. "This is going viral. #AirportHomewrecker."

"Already trending," someone else said.

Solana smiled. She turned to Silas and Genevieve. "You should be ashamed. Helping a woman like this."

Silas's hand tightened on Genevieve's arm. His face had gone pale.

Genevieve's voice was very quiet. "Shay Moore," she said. "Is that your full name?"

Shay blinked. "Yes."

"I'll remember it," Genevieve said.

The crowd pressed closer. The noise was deafening. I couldn't think. Couldn't breathe.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years, and Shay had just destroyed me in front of hundreds of strangers without a single tremor in her voice.

I looked at her. At the woman I'd called my sister. The woman who had held my hand at my mother's funeral. Who had helped me pick my wedding dress.

And I felt something inside me crack.
