Chapter 2

Three weeks. Three weeks since the violinist had moved into my home, my life, my marriage. Three weeks of watching her wear my clothes, use my things, occupy spaces that were mine. Three weeks of Kelvin's protective glances, his gentle corrections, his absolute certainty that I was being unreasonable. I had endured it all with the same composure that had carried me through five years of marriage—the composure of a woman who had learned that silence was often the only dignity left to her.

But that afternoon, something changed.

I returned from a gallery board meeting, my mind still processing acquisition proposals and budget allocations. The penthouse was quiet as I stepped through the foyer, my heels clicking against the marble. I was looking forward to changing out of my suit, perhaps reading for a while in the solitude of my bedroom—a small pleasure I had been denied for weeks.

The master bedroom door was ajar.

I pushed it open, and the world stopped.

Analia was on my bed—our bed—barefoot, her auburn hair falling loose around her shoulders. She wore a dress I recognized instantly: a custom Valentino in deep burgundy silk, with a neckline that plunged just low enough to be elegant rather than vulgar. It was my dress. My measurements. My taste. I had commissioned it for the Met Gala, but it had arrived too late, still needing alterations. I had left it hanging in my closet, waiting for the right moment.

She was running scales on her violin, the sound filling the room with practiced precision. Her eyes were closed, her body swaying slightly with the melody. She looked completely at home—not like a guest, not like someone who had been invited to stay for a few nights. She looked like she owned the space, like she belonged there far more than I ever had.

Something broke inside me. Not with a crash, not with a sob, but with a clean, sharp snap—like a bone finally giving way under too much weight.

I crossed the room in three strides. She opened her eyes at the sound of my approach, her bow freezing mid-note. I didn't speak. I didn't need to. I raised my hand and slapped her across the face with enough force to make my palm sting.

The sound cracked through the room like a gunshot.

"Don't," she gasped, her hand flying to her cheek. "I didn't—"

I grabbed the neckline of the dress—my dress—and tore it down from her shoulders. The silk gave way with a satisfying rip, the seam splitting under my fingers. She cried out, more in shock than pain, and crumpled back against the headboard, clutching the torn fabric to her chest.

"Get out," I said, my voice steady and cold. "Get out of my bed. Get out of my dress. Get out of my life."

Footsteps thundered down the hall. Kelvin appeared in the doorway, his face flushed with anger. He took in the scene—Analia huddled on the bed, the torn dress, the red mark blooming on her cheek—and immediately went to her side.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" he demanded, his arm around her shoulders, his voice thick with a tenderness I hadn't heard directed at me in years. "She's a guest in our home! She's done nothing to hurt you!"

I didn't answer. I didn't argue. I simply walked to my study, opened the bottom drawer of my desk, and retrieved the manila envelope I had been carrying for three weeks. The envelope that contained the future I had been too afraid to claim.

I returned to the bedroom and dropped it at Kelvin's feet. The papers spilled out—official, legal, final.

"Sign them," I said, my voice perfectly level. "We're done."

His eyes widened as he stared at the divorce papers, then back at me. "Gemma, you can't be serious—"

I was already moving. I collected my coat from the closet, my car keys from the bowl on the console. I left my jewelry, my clothes, my life. I took nothing but what I needed to leave.

I walked out of the penthouse without looking back.

The elevator doors closed, and I was alone. For the first time in five years, I was truly alone.

I drove through Manhattan for forty minutes, the city lights blurring past my windows. My composure, the armor I had worn for so long, began to fracture in the sealed privacy of my car. I didn't cry—I hadn't cried in front of anyone since I was nineteen—but my hands shook on the steering wheel, and my breath came in short, sharp gasps.

I ended up in Tribeca, outside a place I hadn't visited in years. *Velvet*. An elite members-only lounge, dimly lit and exclusive. I had gone there once with Diane, back when I was still Gemma Snyder, heiress and art curator, before I became Mrs. Ramirez—before I became nothing at all.

I walked in, ignoring the host's surprised look, and went straight to the bar. "Macallan 25," I told the bartender. "Neat."

I drank it in one swallow. Then I ordered another. And another.

On the fourth drink, I turned to the host and said, "I'd like your most exclusive host to join me."

I didn't want him. I didn't want anyone. But I needed to feel something—anything—to remind myself that I still existed as a woman, not just as the wife Kelvin Ramirez had discarded without ever truly seeing.
