Chapter 3

The nights in Ward 4 were long and cold.

Down the dark hallway, a woman screamed until her voice turned to gravel. Another banged her tin cup against the iron bars, rhythmically, hour after hour. Nobody came to stop them. The night orderlies stayed in their glass booth, watching television with the sound turned low.

I sat in the corner by the rusted radiator, my knees pulled to my chest. Every breath pulled at the tight stitches across my lower belly. The pain was dull, throbbing, and constant.

Victoria sat beside me on the bare floor. Her back was straight. Even in stained gray scrubs, she held herself like a woman who commanded boardrooms.

"New York Mental Hygiene Law, Section 9.27," Victoria whispered. Her voice was flat and steady. "An involuntary commitment requires the certification of two independent physicians. It requires formal notice to the Mental Hygiene Legal Service within five days. It requires a court hearing before prolonged confinement."

I looked at her through the dark. "Silas didn't do any of that."

"Of course he didn't," she replied quietly. Her fingers drummed against her knee. "Silas Armstrong paid Kline to forge an emergency petition under Section 9.39. Substantial risk of physical harm to yourself or others. He bypassed the clerk. He bypassed the state monitor. He buried your paper trail."

A cold wind rattled the barred window above us.

"It was premeditated," I said. My voice didn't shake this time. It felt dry. Like sand. "He didn't just panic after the press found out about the baby. He had this ready."

"Men like your husband always have a cage ready," Victoria said. "They build them with money and buy silence in bulk. He didn't send you here to recover, Natalie. In thirty days, Kline will diagnose you with treatment-resistant psychosis. They will transfer you to the permanent locked ward in the basement. You will never see daylight again."

I stared down at my bare left ring finger.

The skin was pale where my wedding band used to sit. For seven years, I looked at that finger and remembered the boy who bled for me in a dark Bronx alley. I remembered the boy who cut off his own pinky just to prove he would never leave me.

That boy was dead. He didn't exist. The man who wore tailored suits and kissed Londyn Fisher had strangled him.

Something inside my chest snapped clean in half. The last ember of warmth flickered out. Ice rushed into the empty space where my heart used to beat.

"Silas thinks I have nowhere to go," I whispered.

Victoria tilted her head, studying me in the dim shadows. "Do you?"

"My name isn't Natalie Armstrong," I said softly. "It never really was."

The screaming down the hall stopped for a second, replaced by heavy silence.

"My maiden name is Edwards," I said. "Nathaniel Edwards is my father."

Victoria froze. Her sharp eyes went wide, fixing on my bruised face. "Edwards Global? Defense tech, shipping, private equity?"

"Yes."

"The Edwards who owns half of Lower Manhattan and buys senators for breakfast?" Her breath hitched. "You're his daughter?"

"I was," I said, my knuckles turning white against my knees. "He told me if I walked out that door with a broke street fighter, I was dead to him. I chose Silas. I gave up billions. I lived in basements and washed his clothes in coin laundries. I threw my entire life away for a monster."

Victoria didn't speak for a long time. Then, a slow, terrifying smile touched her lips. Her eyes sharpened until they looked like twin blades.

"Then you have a weapon, Natalie," she said, her voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "You just haven't picked it up yet."

The next evening, Victoria made her move.

She traded a silver necklace she had hidden inside her mattress hem to an orderly named Hector. In return, she brought back a beat-up, dog-eared paperback novel and a short, dried-out ballpoint pen.

We sat under the flickering bulb in the corner of the laundry room.

I tore the front cover off the book. On the blank inner page and along the yellowed margins, my hand moved quickly. The corporate shorthand my father made me learn when I was sixteen came back to me instantly.

I wrote with precision. No tears. No begging.

*Greystone Psychiatric Center. Ward 4. Involuntary hold.*

*Administrator: Dr. Arthur Kline. Bribed by Armstrong Industries.*

*Silas Armstrong caused the death of your grandson. He locked me away to cover it up.*

I paused. My pen hovered over the rough paper. I pressed the tip down hard, the ink bleeding dark into the wood pulp.

*I was wrong. I'm coming home.*

I signed my real name at the bottom. *Natalie Edwards.*

As I stared at the dark ink, another truth settled into my bones with absolute, freezing certainty.

I was going to divorce Silas Armstrong.

I wasn't going to ask for half of his tech company. I was going to take all of it. I was going to rip away his money, his status, his precious public image, and the woman he killed my child for. I was going to leave him with nothing—just like the street rat he used to be.

I tore the page from the book, folded it into a tiny square, and handed it to Victoria.

"Hector works the midnight shift," Victoria whispered, slipping the paper into her waistband. "His cousin runs a courier drop in Midtown. The letter will be on your father’s desk before sunrise."

I looked at the barred window, where the first drops of a cold rain began to fall.

"Let it," I whispered.
