Chapter 4

Keith called the morning after the funeral. I was sitting on the kitchen floor. I'd been there since dawn. The photograph of my mother — me at seven, holding a paper boat — was on the counter where I could see it.

"Elisa," he said when I answered. "I'm so sorry. I sent flowers. Did you get them?"

I looked at the bouquet on the table. White roses. Expensive. The card was still in its envelope.

"Yes," I said.

"I wanted to be there. You know I did. But the board meeting ran late, and then there was the Pierce Capital merger discussion, and—"

"Athena did it," I said.

Silence on the line.

"She sent the wrong blood type. On purpose. She told me she'd help, made me—" My voice cracked. I pressed my palm against my mouth. Counted to four. "She made me kneel and beg, and then she killed my mother."

"Elisa." Keith's voice was gentle. Patient. The voice you use with children. "You're grieving. You're not thinking clearly."

"I'm telling you what happened."

"It was a hospital error. These things happen. It's tragic, but—"

"Keith, she made me slap myself on a video call. She made me say I was nothing. She promised she'd send the blood if I did it, and then she sent the wrong type. She murdered my mother."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"That doesn't make sense," Keith said finally. "Athena has no reason to do something like that. And no access to hospital blood supplies. You're connecting things that aren't connected because you need someone to blame."

I closed my eyes. "I need you to believe me."

"I need you to trust me," he said. "I know you're hurting. I know this is unbearable. But making accusations against Athena right now — when we're this close to finalizing everything — it's not going to bring your mother back. It's only going to make things harder."

I opened my eyes. Stared at the photograph on the counter.

"Come to the penthouse tonight," Keith continued. "Let me take care of you. You shouldn't be alone right now."

"Okay," I whispered.

"I love you," he said.

I hung up without answering.

I buried my mother three days later in a Brooklyn cemetery. It was raining. The funeral director and I were the only ones there. I stood under a black umbrella that didn't quite cover my shoulders and watched them lower the casket into the ground.

I didn't cry. I'd tried that morning, standing in front of the bathroom mirror, willing the tears to come. Nothing happened. Just the same cold silence that had been spreading through me for weeks.

Afterward, I went to my mother's apartment. The landlord had given me two weeks to clear it out. I walked through the rooms slowly. Touched things. Her reading glasses on the kitchen table. Her sweater on the back of a chair.

I took the photograph from the windowsill — me at seven, squinting into sunlight — and her reading glasses. That was all. Everything else could go to Goodwill or the dumpster. It didn't matter.

I carried the photograph back to Queens and set it on my own windowsill. Right next to the spot where I used to keep the cloth doll I'd made for Keith when we were twelve. The doll was in his office now. He'd taken it years ago. Said he wanted to keep a piece of me with him.

I stared at the empty space where it used to be and felt nothing.

The knock came two weeks later. It was a Thursday afternoon. I was folding laundry in the living room when I heard voices in the hallway. Loud. Excited.

I opened the door.

A man with a camera stood three feet away. Behind him, a woman with a microphone. Behind her, more people. Phones out. Recording.

"Elisa Carter?" the woman asked. Her smile was sharp. Professional.

"Yes?"

"We're from Metropolitan Pulse. We're doing a story on Keith Armstrong and Athena Pierce's upcoming engagement party. We have reports that Keith has been maintaining a second residence here in Queens. Can you comment on your relationship with him?"

My hands went cold.

"I don't know what you're talking about," I said.

The woman's smile widened. "We have sources placing Keith Armstrong at this address multiple times over the past several months. We have photographs of him entering the building. Are you his mistress, Miss Carter?"

The camera was in my face now. The hallway was filling with people. Neighbors opening doors. Watching.

"No," I said.

Something shifted in the woman's expression. Disappointment, maybe. She started to turn away.

I thought about my mother. About the hospital corridor. About kneeling on cold linoleum while Athena smiled.

I thought about Keith's voice on the phone: *You're not thinking clearly.*

"Wait," I said.

The woman turned back. The camera swung toward me again.

I walked into the apartment. My hands were shaking. I opened the drawer where I kept our marriage certificate — the one we'd gotten five years ago at the courthouse, the one Keith said we had to keep secret until the timing was right.

I pulled it out. Walked back to the door. Held it up.

The camera zoomed in. I could see the lens focusing. Could see my own reflection in the glass.

"I'm not his mistress," I said. My voice was steady. Clear. "I'm his wife."

The hallway went silent.

Then everyone started talking at once. The camera flashed. The woman was asking questions I couldn't hear over the roaring in my ears.

I stood there holding the marriage certificate, watching their faces change, and felt something crack open in my chest. Not grief. Not rage.

Power.

For the first time in months, I had said something that mattered. Something that couldn't be dismissed or managed or explained away.

I had told the truth.

And the whole world was about to hear it.
