Chapter 3

My mother died at eleven forty-two that night.

The standard ambulance response wasn't fast enough. The neurological team Curtis could have accessed with one phone call never came. The window Kataleya closed with a laugh stayed closed.

I drove to Connecticut in the dark. I don't remember the drive. I remember my hands on the wheel. The white lines on the highway. Nothing else.

The house was dark when I arrived. The front door was unlocked. I pushed it open.

My father sat in his armchair by the window. Motionless. Staring at nothing.

On the mantle, a framed photo of my mother. Draped in black.

I stood in the doorway. My father didn't look at me. Didn't speak.

I closed the door behind me. Set my keys on the hall table. Walked to the other chair and sat down.

We stayed like that all night. No words. Just the sound of the old house settling around us.

When morning came, I made tea. Called the funeral home. Arranged everything.

I'd spent five years managing other people's crises. I knew how to do this.

My phone stayed in my purse. Curtis didn't call. I didn't call him.

He didn't know my mother was dead. I didn't tell him.

The funeral arrangements took two days. The service would be small. My father wanted it that way. I signed papers. Chose flowers. White roses. My mother's favorite.

I moved through it all like I was underwater. Everything felt slow and muffled and far away.

On the second night, after my father went to bed, I sat alone at the kitchen table.

The same table where I'd eaten breakfast every morning as a child. Where my mother helped me with homework. Where she taught me to bake bread on Sunday afternoons.

I pulled out my laptop. Opened a blank document.

I started writing.

Not for Curtis. Not for Kataleya. Not even for myself.

Just to put it down. To make it real. To name every single thing that had been invisible for five years.

I wrote about the tuition payments. Columbia graduate school. Forty-three thousand dollars. My savings account emptied in two years.

I wrote about the family connections. My uncle's real estate firm. The introduction that got Curtis his first major commission. The Tribeca project that made his name.

I wrote about my own career. Interior design. The job offers I turned down. The portfolio I stopped updating. The dreams I set aside because his firm needed someone to manage invoices and client calls and the hundred small crises that happen when you're building something from nothing.

I wrote about the affair. The first time I found evidence. The Tiffany receipt. The bank statements. The Upper West Side condo purchased under her name.

I wrote about the promises. The tears. The apologies. "It's over, Nora. I swear. I'll never see her again."

I wrote about the lies.

Then I wrote about the phone call.

My mother on the kitchen floor. Margaret Chen's breathless voice. The ambulance coming but not fast enough. Mount Sinai. The neurological team Curtis knew personally. The one call that could have opened the window.

Kataleya's voice on his phone. Relaxed. Amused.

"He's busy, sweetie. Try 911."

The soft laugh.

The line going dead.

My mother dying at eleven forty-two while Curtis was in the shower in the condo I paid for.

I wrote it all down. Every word exact. Every detail precise.

When I finished, it was three in the morning. My hands ached. My eyes burned.

I read it through once. Then again.

It was the truth. Just the truth. No embellishment. No performance.

I added one last line:

"I gave him everything I had. He took it. There is nothing left."

I posted it to my social media. Facebook. Instagram. Twitter. All of them.

Then I opened a new browser tab and booked a flight.

One way to Naples. Departing tomorrow at six PM.

I closed the laptop. Sat back in the chair.

The kitchen was quiet. The refrigerator hummed. Outside, the first birds were starting to sing.

I felt nothing.

No anger. No grief. No fear.

Just a strange, hollow calm.

Like a candle that had finally burned all the way down.

I stood up. Washed my tea mug. Dried it. Put it back in the cabinet.

Then I went upstairs to pack.
