Chapter 3

Ambrose refilled my water glass without looking up from his soup.

I noticed because it was the second time. No pause, no offer, no waiting to see if I'd ask. Just — noticing the glass was low, and filling it. The way you do for someone without thinking.

Gavin had stopped doing that somewhere around year two.

'What's in the notebook?' Ambrose asked.

I looked down. I'd set it on the table without realizing — the small black one I carried everywhere, worn soft at the corners. Old habit.

'Observations,' I said.

He waited. He did that — waited without pressing, like silence didn't bother him.

'Consumer stuff, mostly. I started it as a hobby.' I turned it over in my hands. 'Brands that promise women one thing and deliver something completely different. The gap between the marketing and what people actually need.' I shrugged. 'It's nothing.'

'Can I see?'

I slid it across the table.

He read slowly. Turned a few pages. His expression didn't perform anything — no polite nodding, no exaggerated interest. Just reading. Actually reading.

'This is specific,' he said finally.

'I have a lot of free time.'

He looked up. There was something in his eyes — not pity, not sympathy. Just recognition. 'You should do something with this.'

'Like what?'

He slid the notebook back. 'I don't know yet. But don't stop.'

We finished our soup. The restaurant was warm and small and nobody bothered us. Outside, the city moved past the fogged window like a film I wasn't in.

I didn't think about Gavin once.

His text came at eight-fifteen on a Tuesday morning.

*So sorry — urgent call just came up, can't make the class. Go without me? I'll make it up to you.*

I read it twice. Then I put my phone face-down on the counter and finished my coffee.

The baking studio was on the second floor of a building on East Ninth, up a narrow staircase that smelled like vanilla and old wood. I pushed open the door and found Ambrose standing near the sign-in table, holding two coffees, looking at the apron in his hand like it had personally offended him.

'It says *Bake the World a Better Place*,' he said when he saw me.

'I know.'

'I'm wearing it anyway.'

'I can see that.'

He handed me a coffee. I took it. We found our station — a wide wooden counter with a stand mixer, two sets of measuring cups, and a laminated recipe card for pumpkin spice layer cake.

The station next to ours belonged to a couple named Diana and her husband. I knew her name because she said it loudly and often, laughing at everything he did. He was attentive in that uncomplicated way — adjusting her apron strings, handing her the spatula before she reached for it, stealing batter off her spoon while she pretended to scold him. Their cake batter came together smooth and even. Of course it did.

Ours was a different story.

Ambrose measured the flour with the focused expression of a man defusing something. I overmixed the batter. The layers came out uneven — one thick, one thin, one that slid sideways when we tried to stack them. The cream cheese frosting was good but there wasn't enough of it, so we scraped it thin across the top and called it architectural.

'It looks like it's tired,' Ambrose said, studying it.

'It's had a long day.'

'We all have.'

I laughed. Not a polite laugh — a real one, the kind that came up fast and surprised me. Ambrose looked at me when I did it, just for a second, and then he looked back at the cake.

Diana's cake was perfect. Three even tiers, smooth frosting, a little cinnamon dusted on top. She photographed it from four angles while her husband stood behind her with his arms around her waist.

I looked at our lopsided creation and felt something warm and uncomplicated move through my chest.

We walked home through the cold. November had finally arrived for real — sharp air, bare trees, the sky going gray at the edges. I had my hands in my pockets and my shoulder almost touching his.

'I think the middle layer was my fault,' Ambrose said.

'It was definitely your fault.'

'I accept that.'

I laughed again. It kept happening, easy and unforced, like something that had been stuck had finally come loose.

Gavin came home that evening with Thai takeout and a bottle of Sancerre, which was his version of an apology without the word sorry.

'Thought I'd make it up to you,' he said, setting the bags on the counter. He was in a good mood — the particular brightness of someone who'd had a satisfying day.

I got out plates. We ate at the table. He talked about his call, about a deal moving forward, about something a client had said that made everyone in the room laugh. I listened. Nodded at the right moments.

'You seem good,' he said at one point. 'Light.'

'I had a productive afternoon.'

'Yeah?' He reached for more wine. 'What'd you do?'

'Baking class.'

'Right, right.' He nodded. Already moving on. 'How was it?'

I thought about the lopsided cake. About Ambrose in his apron. About laughing so suddenly it caught me off guard.

'Fine,' I said. 'The cake was a little uneven.'

'That's too bad.'

'Not really,' I said. 'I didn't mind.'

He didn't ask anything further. He never did.
