Chapter 1

My husband had been keeping me locked in the basement for a long time.

Maybe a week? I wasn’t sure anymore.

The basement smelled like dust and old concrete. My wrists hurt from the rope marks even though he had already untied me yesterday. There was no window. No clock. Just the sound from upstairs.

The sound of their laughter.

The sound of my husband fucking another woman in our bed.

The walls were thin enough that every noise crawled straight into my skull. The bed frame slammed against the wall in uneven rhythms while the woman upstairs laughed breathlessly.

“Oh my God— slower—”

Chloe — the new mistress he found because she looked eerily similar to Sophia, the woman he had always loved.

Then his voice.

“You like that?”

The mattress creaked harder.

I curled my fingers against my knees and pressed my forehead against the cold wall, trying not to hear it.

Trying not to imagine it.

Two hours later, another voice drifted down from upstairs.

“Dad! I won!”

My son.

Six years old.

His little sneakers pounded across the floor above my head.

The woman laughed softly. “Wow, you’re so good at this game.”

My son giggled. “Really?”

“Of course.”

“I like you more than my mum.”

Her laugh turned sweeter. Practiced. “That’s dangerous to say.”

“No it’s not.” He paused. “Can you come play again tomorrow?”

“Maybe.”

“Why maybe?”

Silence.

Then my son asked carefully, “When Mom comes back from her trip… can you still come here?”

Trip.

That was what they told him.

In fact, mommy was locked in the basement like an animal.

The woman hesitated before answering. “I don’t know if your dad would want that.”

“I do.” My son sounded upset now. “I wish she’d stay gone forever.”

Something inside me cracked so quietly I almost didn’t notice it.

Upstairs, the bed started moving again.

I pressed both hands over my ears.

It didn’t help.

—

Five years ago, I thought marriage meant safety.

That was before I learned rich people could be just as cruel as poor ones. They just wore better clothes while doing it.

I was born into the Sterling family. Owners of one of the largest luxury hotel chains in the country.

But I was kidnapped when I was five.

By the time the police found me, I was already seventeen.

Too old. Too damaged.

My adoptive parents never treated me like a daughter. I was an investment. Something pretty enough to sell later.

At sixteen, my adoptive father pulled me out of school and told me education was wasted on women.

“A woman’s value is between her legs and behind a kitchen sink,” he said while smoking at the dinner table. “The smarter you act, the less men like you.”

My adoptive mother lowered her eyes and kept washing dishes.

She never disagreed with him.

Not once.

So I learned how to stay quiet.

How to smile.

How to survive men touching me when I didn’t want them to.

Then my real family found me.

I thought my life was finally changing.

Instead, my older brother, the boy my biological parents adopted after I disappeared, eventually became their real son in every way that mattered.

After I was kidnapped, my parents believed I was dead for years. During that time, they adopted him.

He looked at me across his office desk and said calmly, “You should marry him.”

I stared at him. “You barely even know me.”

“This marriage benefits both families.”

“I don’t love him.”

“You don’t need love.”

His expression never changed.

Cold. Controlled. Perfect.

“Marriage is a business decision,” he continued. “And considering your background, this is a good opportunity for you.”

A good opportunity.

I almost laughed.

Because nobody had ever explained what a good life was supposed to feel like.

So I married Damian Vale.

And six months later, I got pregnant.

After that, divorce was no longer an option.

At least not for him.

—

Footsteps echoed above me.

Heavy. Uneven.

The basement door slammed open hard enough to shake the walls.

I smelled alcohol before I even saw him.

Damian stumbled down the stairs, loosening his tie with one hand. His eyes were bloodshot. Angry.

“You awake?”

He grabbed my jaw immediately.

I didn’t answer.

His grip tightened.

“You know what’s funny?” he muttered. “If you never married me, I could’ve gone to Paris with Sophia.”

Sophia.

The woman he actually loved.

The woman who left him years ago.

“She came back,” he continued bitterly. “Do you understand that? She finally came back. And I can’t even be with her because of you.”

I swallowed hard.

“She left you.”

That was a mistake.

His slap hit so hard my head snapped sideways.

Pain exploded across my cheek.

“You think you can talk back to me?” he hissed.

I tasted blood immediately.

Damian grabbed my throat loosely, not enough to choke, just enough to remind me he could.

“If you hadn’t gotten pregnant, we could’ve divorced quietly.” His voice dropped lower. “But now my company wants a perfect image. A wife. A child. Stability.”

He laughed coldly.

“So congratulations. We’re trapped together forever.”

Tears burned my eyes, but I forced them back.

He hated crying.

“You should be grateful,” he said. “Most women would kill to live in this house.”

“Especially not a stupid woman who grew up in the countryside and never even finished high school.”

I looked at him silently.

Maybe another woman would’ve screamed.

Maybe another woman would’ve fought back.

But I learned very young that fighting usually made things worse.

Damian noticed my silence and sneered. “That look again.”

“What look?”

“Like you’re scared of me.”

I almost laughed at the stupidity of the question.

He moved closer until I could smell whiskey on his breath.

“You know,” he murmured, “sometimes I think you enjoy acting pathetic.”

“I don’t.”

“Really?” His hand slid down my arm roughly. “Because every time I touch you, you flinch.”

My body reacted before my brain did.

I pulled away instinctively.

The expression on his face changed instantly.

Dangerous.

He shoved me backward against the wall.

“Don’t fucking do that.”

My heart started racing.

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re my wife.”

His voice became louder with every word.

“If I want you, you don’t get to refuse.”

“I wasn’t refusing—”

Another slap.

Harder this time.

“Liar.”

Tears finally spilled from my eyes.

Damian grabbed both my wrists and pinned them above my head.

“You know what your problem is?” he snarled. “You still think you have choices.”

I shook my head quickly. “I don’t—”

“I can lock you down here for months.” His grip tightened painfully. “I can send you to prison if I want. I can make sure you never see your son again.”

That broke me faster than the pain did.

Please.

Anything but that.

My son already hated me enough.

I squeezed my eyes shut.

Damian’s breathing grew heavier as he stared at my face.

“You’re crying again.”

I hated how disgusted he sounded.

Like my pain annoyed him.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He suddenly let go of my wrists.

I collapsed forward slightly, breathing hard.

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Then he laughed quietly.

“You know what’s ironic?” he said. “Sophia always said you looked innocent.”

I froze.

“She said men like girls like you because they look easy to break.”

His fingers brushed the tears off my cheek almost gently.

“But she was wrong.”

He leaned down close enough for me to hear every word clearly.

“I use you as an outlet for my frustration. I’ve never felt anything for you.”

He tore my clothes open, and I shut my eyes tightly. Every movement hurt. Every touch made pain crawl through my body, but I didn’t fight back.

I couldn’t.

Not after everything my adoptive father taught me.

Never resist a man.
