Chapter 2

The coffee shop in the Financial District smelled like burnt espresso and ambition. I'd chosen it deliberately—a place where Mason would never set foot, too ordinary for his carefully curated image. The kind of spot where actual work happened instead of performance.

Elliot Hall sat across from me in a corner booth, his scotch replaced by black coffee. He hadn't said a word since I'd slid the dossier across the scarred table.

I watched his eyes move across the pages. Knight Capital's overleveraged tech positions, laid out in columns and charts that told a story Mason thought he'd kept hidden. Late-night phone calls I'd pretended not to hear. Documents left carelessly on his desk while he showered. Five years of being invisible had taught me how to see everything.

"Where did you get this?" Elliot's voice was quiet, controlled.

"I was married to him." I took a sip of my own coffee. It was terrible. "People forget you're in the room when they think you're just decoration."

His mouth twitched. Not quite a smile, but close. "What do you want?"

"A position. Consultant. I help you acquire what's left of Scott Enterprises, and you give me the resources to rebuild it." I held his gaze. "I'm not asking for charity. I'm offering you a way to destroy Mason Knight."

Elliot set the dossier down. His fingers drummed once against the table—the only sign of the calculation happening behind those sharp eyes. "You know he'll retaliate."

"I'm counting on it."

He studied me for a long moment. Not the way Mason used to look at me, cataloging flaws to fix. Elliot was measuring capability. Assessing an equal.

"Monday," he said. "Nine AM. My office."

I stood, smoothing my suit jacket. "I'll be there."

"Clara." I paused. "Welcome back."

The words hit somewhere deep, in a place I'd thought Mason had hollowed out completely.

Mason found me three days later.

I'd just finished unpacking the last box in my temporary apartment—a modest two-bedroom in Tribeca that would've fit in Mason's penthouse closet. The knock came hard and fast, the kind that demanded rather than asked.

I knew it was him before I opened the door.

He pushed past me, all coiled energy and barely restrained fury. The careful mask had cracked. "You were seen with Elliot Hall."

"I had coffee with a business associate." I closed the door. Didn't lock it. I wanted him to know I wasn't afraid. "Is that a problem?"

"Clara, sweetheart—" There it was, that voice. Soft. Concerned. The tone that used to make me question my own reality. "I know you're hurt. I know this is difficult. But Elliot is using you to get to me. He doesn't care about you. He's manipulating—"

"Like you manipulated Rebecca Chen?" I watched his face freeze. "Or Sarah Mitchell before her? Or was it Amanda Torres first? I lose track of your rescue projects."

The color drained from his skin. "That's not—"

"You have a pattern, Mason. Find a successful woman. Orchestrate her downfall. Swoop in as the hero. Rebuild her exactly how you want her." I moved closer, watching him retreat a step. "Then, once she's stable, once she doesn't need you anymore, you get bored. You find the next broken thing."

His jaw clenched. That tell. "You don't know what you're talking about."

"Lillie's already getting comfortable, isn't she? Starting to have opinions. Making demands." I tilted my head. "Give it six months. Maybe a year. She'll stop looking at you like you're God, and you'll start noticing the cracks. Then you'll find someone new who needs saving."

"Stop." His voice cracked.

"The problem is, Mason, I don't need you anymore. And you can't stand it."

He stared at me like I was speaking a language he'd never heard. Then he turned and walked out, his footsteps echoing in the hallway like a retreat.

I waited until the sound faded before I let myself breathe.

The retirement home in Queens smelled like antiseptic and old flowers. Victoria Chen sat in the common room, a book in her lap, looking smaller than I remembered. My father's CFO had been a force of nature once—sharp-tongued and sharper-minded, the woman who'd taught me to read a balance sheet before I could read chapter books.

She looked up when I approached. Her eyes widened. "Clara?"

"Hello, Victoria."

We moved to her room, a small space made smaller by the weight of everything unsaid. She poured tea with hands that trembled slightly, and I pretended not to notice.

"Why are you here?" Her voice was careful. Guarded.

"I'm bringing Scott Enterprises back." The words felt like a vow. "And I need your help."

Victoria's cup rattled against its saucer. "Clara, that company is dead. Has been for five years."

"Nothing's dead until I say it is." I leaned forward. "The takeover. You always said something was wrong about it. That the timing was too perfect, the information too precise."

Something flickered in her eyes. Old anger, maybe. Or old fear.

"I kept records," she said finally. "Your father told me to destroy them, but I couldn't. I knew—" She stopped. Started again. "Someone leaked our acquisition targets. Our financial projections. Everything."

She stood, moving to her closet with surprising speed. From behind a stack of sweaters, she pulled out a small flash drive.

"Encrypted emails. Communications between board members and an outside investor." She pressed it into my palm. "I could never prove who was behind it. But Clara—" Her fingers tightened on mine. "Be careful. Whoever destroyed your father didn't just want his company. They wanted to break him completely."

I looked down at the flash drive. It was small, unremarkable. It felt like holding a loaded gun.

"Thank you, Victoria."

She pulled me into a hug that smelled like lavender and old grief. "Your father would be proud," she whispered. "The real you. Not the one you've been pretending to be."

I left as the sun set over Queens, the flash drive burning a hole in my pocket. Somewhere in those encrypted files was the truth. And I was willing to bet everything that the truth had Mason Knight's fingerprints all over it.
