Chapter 1

Dexter stood in the middle of his studio, rolling a canvas I'd paid for. The light from the window caught the edge of the frame. He didn't look up.

"I'm taking a creative retreat," he said. "Montana. The backcountry. Three weeks."

I set my coffee mug on the counter. "When?"

"Friday."

Three days. I watched him tape the canvas shut with careful hands. The same hands that used to sketch me on Sunday mornings when we lived in that apartment with the broken radiator. The same hands that stopped touching me sometime last year.

"Emberlynn's coming," he added. "As my artistic collaborator."

The name landed like a stone in still water. Emberlynn Tran. Twenty-three years old. Art student. Recipient of the scholarship fund I'd personally established through Seattle General's charitable arm. I'd written the recommendation letter myself.

I kept my voice level. "The girl from my program."

"She's talented." He finally looked at me. "You said so yourself."

He wasn't wrong. I had said it. I'd believed it. I'd fought the hospital board to expand the fund so we could sponsor her tuition. She'd sent me a handwritten thank-you card with a small watercolor of cherry blossoms. I still had it somewhere.

Dexter lifted another canvas. This one had a half-finished landscape on it — the kind of raw, emotional work he used to create back when we ate ramen four nights a week and he painted by lamplight because we couldn't afford proper studio lighting. Before the critics started calling him "the next great American realist." Before the gallery shows. Before he stopped needing me.

"I'm coming with you," I said.

His hands stopped. "What?"

"I want to try." I met his eyes. "One last time. Before we—" I let the sentence hang.

He stared at me for a long moment. I could see him calculating. If he refused outright, he'd reveal too much. If he agreed, he'd have to perform the reconciliation he'd already abandoned.

"Fine," he said finally. "But don't expect me to babysit you out there. It's wilderness. Real wilderness."

"I'll manage."

He went back to packing. I walked out of the studio and closed the door behind me.

In my office, I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Marcus Webb. He answered on the second ring.

"Calliope. Tell me you're ready."

"I'm going with him to Montana. I'll have everything you need within two weeks."

"Documented?"

"Timestamped. Recorded. Photographed. Admissible."

There was a pause. "You're sure about this?"

I opened my desk drawer and pulled out the waterproof pouch I'd sealed three weeks ago. Inside: divorce papers, already signed on my side. A USB drive with financial records. A handwritten list of every gallery submission fee, every studio rent payment, every loan I'd covered. Ten years of my salary poured into his dream.

"I'm sure," I said.

"Good. Call me when you're back."

I hung up and sat there for a moment, holding the pouch. Then I locked it in my go-bag with my medical kit and my hiking boots.

The drive to Montana took two days. Emberlynn sat in the back seat beside Dexter. She wore a soft cream sweater and had her dark hair pulled into a braid. She smiled at me in the rearview mirror.

"Mrs. Coleman, thank you so much for letting me come. I know this is a special trip for you both."

Her hand drifted to Dexter's arm. Just a light touch. Casual. She pulled it back when I glanced over my shoulder.

"Call me Calliope," I said.

"Of course." Her voice was warm. Grateful. "I just want you to know how much your scholarship changed my life. I wouldn't be here without you."

Dexter looked out the window. "Calliope's always been generous. Sometimes too generous."

I kept my eyes on the road. My phone sat in my jacket pocket, recording.

That night, we stopped at a motel in eastern Washington. I sat on the edge of the bed with my journal open on my lap, writing by the light of the bathroom door. Timestamps. Quotes. The way Emberlynn's fingers had lingered on his wrist. The way Dexter had said "too generous" like it was a flaw.

The forensic record of a marriage's last chapter.

On the third day, we left the paved roads behind. The landscape opened into endless pine and granite. Dexter drove with one hand on the wheel, relaxed now, talking about light and composition. Emberlynn leaned forward between the seats, nodding, asking questions. They spoke the language of art like a private dialect.

I said nothing. I watched the road and waited.

We reached the campsite late in the afternoon. Dexter parked the SUV near a clearing ringed by lodgepole pines. The air smelled like sap and cold water. Emberlynn stepped out and stretched, her sweater riding up to show a sliver of skin. Dexter's eyes followed.

I grabbed my pack and walked toward the supply cache to refill my water bottle.

That's when I saw him.

He stood at the edge of the tree line, backlit by the low sun, wearing a dark jacket with a conservation foundation patch on the shoulder. Taller than I remembered. Broader. But the same stillness. The same way of holding himself like he was listening to something the rest of us couldn't hear.

Rowan Armstrong.

Ten years collapsed into the space between us.

He saw me at the same moment. His eyes widened. Just slightly. Just enough.

I stopped walking. My water bottle hung loose in my hand.

He didn't move. Neither did I.

Behind me, Dexter's voice called out, asking where I'd gone. I didn't turn around.

Rowan's lips parted. He was going to say my name.

I shook my head once. Not here. Not now.

He closed his mouth. His jaw tightened. But he nodded.

I turned and walked back to camp, my heart pounding so hard I thought Dexter might hear it.

Rowan Armstrong. Here. In the middle of nowhere.

The universe, I thought, has a terrible sense of timing.

Or maybe a perfect one.
