Chapter 1

The urn was small. It was white, and it fit in two hands.

I saw it the moment Aitana Silva walked into the Montgomery penthouse. She wore a soft cream dress and no makeup, the way she always did when she wanted to look breakable. She was Seth's adopted sister. She had lived in this family since she was fifteen. She had spent the last three years making sure I never forgot I didn't belong.

I stood in the middle of the living room, forty-two floors above Seattle. Rain streaked the glass. I was Lyra Bennett, once a girl who washed cars on Third Avenue. Now I was Seth Montgomery's wife, and everyone in this room made sure I felt the difference.

Avery Montgomery, my father-in-law, sat in the leather armchair. He held his pocket watch and didn't look at me. He never said my name. To him I was “that girl.”

Seth stood by the window with his phone in his hand.

“Aitana,” Seth said, tired. “We didn't invite you.”

“I know.” Her voice shook on cue. “But the family deserves to see the truth.”

She picked up the remote. The big screen lit up.

It was hospital security footage. A hallway. A gurney. A woman curled on her side, clutching her stomach.

Me.

My knees went weak. I heard my own voice on the recording, begging someone to save the baby.

“Turn it off,” I whispered.

“She's been lying to you, Seth,” Aitana said softly. “Look at her. She wanted attention.”

Then she lifted the urn and opened the lid.

My lungs stopped working.

“Don't,” I said. “Please. Aitana, please.”

She walked to the window and slid it open. Cold rain blew in. She tilted the urn, and gray dust poured out into the dark.

It was my baby. It was all I had left of her.

I screamed. I don't remember the words. I remember my knees hitting the marble and my hands grabbing at air.

Then Seth moved. He crossed the room fast and pulled Aitana behind his back.

He didn't come to me.

“Enough, Lyra,” he said, his jaw tight. “Stop making a scene.”

I looked up at him. This was the man who once walked four miles through a snowstorm to bring me soup.

Something inside me went quiet. It was like a light switching off in a far room.

I stood up. I didn't scream again.

---

The next morning, I drove alone.

My hospital discharge papers sat on the passenger seat beside the divorce agreement. I had signed every page. My hand hadn't shaken once.

The highway to the Montgomery estate was slick with rain. The wipers beat back and forth. I wasn't hopeful. I wasn't afraid. I was just finished.

Then the back door opened and closed. I hadn't heard anyone get in.

“I wanted to ride with you,” Aitana said from the backseat. “For family solidarity.”

I looked at her in the mirror. She was twisting her diamond ring.

“Don't talk to me,” I said.

She smiled and stayed silent.

---

The brakes went out on the long downhill curve.

I pressed the pedal. It sank to the floor like it was nothing.

“Lyra?” Aitana's voice cracked. “Lyra, slow down!”

“I can't!”

The tires hit standing water. The car floated, then spun. The guardrail flashed past, and the world flipped. Glass burst. My head slammed the window. Then everything stopped, upside down, in a ditch.

I smelled gas.

Smoke curled under the dashboard. Heat licked my ankles. My seatbelt wouldn't release.

Through the cracked windshield, headlights swung across the road. A black car skidded to a stop.

Seth.

He was running. Relief hit me so hard I sobbed.

“Seth! Here! I'm here!”

He ran to the back door. He wrenched it open and pulled Aitana out. She hung limp in his arms. He carried her to the roadside, away from the flames, and held her face in both hands.

He never looked back.

I pounded the glass. “Seth!”

Nothing.

“Seth, please!”

He bent over Aitana. His shoulders shook. He was crying for her.

My fists slowed. The heat climbed my legs, but my hands stopped hitting the glass. I stopped saying his name.

I thought of the urn. I thought of the rain.

I closed my eyes.

The last thing I heard was the roar.

---

Pieces came after that. They didn't connect.

Cool air on my face. Hands under my arms. A man's voice, low and steady.

“Lyra. Stay with me. I've got you.”

I knew that voice. Dr. Zane Brooks. The Montgomery family physician. He was the one who'd held my hand at the ultrasound when Seth didn't show.

“The second tank's going,” someone said. A stranger, rough and fast.

“Move, Elias,” Zane said.

The ground shook. Heat slammed against my back. Then I was lying down and the doors were shutting.

Later, I heard fragments. “Remains planted. Forensics will sign off.” “She's officially gone.”

Then the hum of engines. A needle in my arm. A seat belt across my chest, cold metal humming beneath me.

I opened my eyes once. Zane sat beside me, his hand near mine but not touching.

“You don't have to be anyone anymore,” he said quietly.

I slid back into the dark.

Somewhere over the ocean, Lyra Bennett died.
