Chapter 1

The apartment smelled like new linen and lavender.

I sat on the edge of the couch in my robe, feet bare against the cold floor, and looked at the dress hanging on the closet door across the room. Ivory silk. A long train wrapped in muslin. Tomorrow at noon, I was supposed to walk down an aisle in that dress and marry Julien Arnold, the man I had loved for ten years.

The bed in the next room was made up with the new sheets I'd bought that morning. Soft white cotton. Three hundred thread count. I'd ironed the pillowcases myself, because I wanted everything to be perfect when we came home from the reception. Julien and I had picked that bed out together six months ago, sitting cross-legged on the floor of a Pottery Barn showroom, flipping through a catalog. He'd put his hand on the back of my neck and said, *This one. This is the one we're going to grow old in.*

I smiled at the memory. Picked up my phone. Started scrolling.

An anonymous post. No name, no handle I recognized.

Photos.

I stopped scrolling.

The room in the photo was my room. The headboard was my headboard. The lamp on the nightstand was the one I'd bought at a flea market in Brooklyn two summers ago, the one with the slightly crooked shade I'd never gotten around to fixing.

The man on the bed was Julien.

The woman beneath him was Christina.

My best friend of twelve years. Her hair was longer now than it had been at Christmas. I noticed that first, before I noticed anything else. Her hair was longer, and she was laughing in one of the photos, her head thrown back, her hand on his chest.

I sat very still.

I felt the cold spread slowly from my sternum outward, like ink in water. My hands did not shake. My breath did not catch. I noticed both of these things at a distance, the way you might notice the weather from inside a closed car.

I scrolled through every photo. There were eleven.

Then I called Julien.

He picked up on the third ring.

"Hey." His voice was warm, sleepy, easy. "Can't sleep either?"

"No," I said. "I can't."

"Pre-wedding nerves. Totally normal." I could hear him smiling. "You at home?"

"I'm at home. Where are you?"

"At my place. Trying to wind down. Just had a drink with the guys, came back about an hour ago."

In the background, very softly, I heard her laugh.

It was a small sound. Two notes. The kind of laugh she made when something delighted her in a private way. I had heard that laugh a thousand times across twelve years — over wine, over bad television, over my own jokes. I knew it the way you know the sound of your own name.

"That's nice," I said. My voice was steady. "Get some sleep, okay?"

"You too, baby. Big day tomorrow."

"Big day," I agreed. "Goodnight, Julien."

"Goodnight."

I ended the call. I set the phone face-down on the kitchen counter.

I stood up.

I walked to the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and drank all of it. Then I rinsed the glass and set it upside down on the dish rack.

Something inside me had gone quiet. Not broken. Quiet. The way a room goes quiet when the music stops and you realize you don't want to put another song on.

I opened my laptop.

I sat at the kitchen island, the white marble cool under my forearms, and I composed an email.

*Dear Professor Hoffmann,*

*I hope this reaches you well. I'm writing to ask whether the faculty position you offered me three years ago — or anything comparable — might still have an opening. My circumstances have changed. I am available immediately.*

*With warmth and regret for the years between,*

*Willa Turner*

I read it twice. I sent it.

I made coffee.

I sat down at the counter with the cup between my hands and I looked at the wedding dress through the open bedroom door. It looked, in the dim light, like a person standing very still.

The laptop chimed.

Forty-seven minutes had passed.

*Dear Willa,*

*We would be honored to have you back. When can you start?*

*— Dieter*

I booked a 6:40 a.m. flight to Munich.

I packed one carry-on. A few sweaters. Two pairs of jeans. The small worn copy of Saussure's *Course in General Linguistics* that had sat on my nightstand since I was nineteen, the spine soft as fabric from a decade of being opened. My passport. Three sets of underwear. A toothbrush.

I left the dress on the closet door.

In the kitchen, I slid the engagement ring off my finger and set it on the counter. Beside it, I placed Julien's spare key. I lined them up carefully, the way you set a table.

Then I sat down one last time and I opened a new email to the wedding venue's AV coordinator. I attached the evidence file I had compiled in the last two hours — every screenshot, every audio clip, every piece of metadata that traced the anonymous post back to Christina's own device.

*Please load this to the main ballroom screen at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. It will be self-explanatory.*

*— W. Turner*

I sent it.

I picked up my bag.

I did not look back at the bed, or the dress, or the ring on the counter. I closed the door behind me with a soft, even click, and I walked out into the pre-dawn quiet of a city that had, until tonight, been mine.

The air on the street was cold and clean. A taxi turned the corner with its light on.

I raised my hand.
