Chapter 2

The hospital bed was too narrow. I lay on my side and watched the window turn gray. Dawn was coming. Milan sat in the chair beside me. He hadn't moved in hours.

The doctor had left. The nurses had stopped checking on me. There was nothing left to monitor. No heartbeat. No baby. Just me and the thin sheets and the fluorescent lights that never turned off.

I sat up slowly. My stomach ached. Everything ached.

"I need to go back," I said.

Milan looked at me. His face was pale. He had dark circles under his eyes.

"Back where?" he asked.

"The Plaza," I said. "The ballroom."

He didn't move. "Ariah—"

"I'm going back," I said. "With or without you."

He stared at me for a long moment. Then he stood and pulled out his phone. He made one call. Spoke quietly. Hung up.

"I'll take you," he said.

I nodded.

I looked down at my lap. The wedding gown was still on. White silk and lace. Blood dried brown at the hem. Red across the bodice where I'd pressed my hands to my stomach in the ambulance.

I didn't change.

---

The Plaza Hotel looked the same as it had two days ago. White marble. Gold trim. Roses everywhere. Milan pulled the car up to the side entrance. He came around and opened my door.

I stepped out. The doorman stared. His mouth opened. He didn't say anything.

Milan offered his arm. I took it.

We walked through the service hallway. Past the kitchen. Past the staff locker rooms. No one stopped us. Milan had made the call. Someone had cleared the way.

We stopped outside the ballroom doors. I could hear voices inside. Laughter. The string quartet warming up. Four hundred guests already seated.

Kaden was in there. Waiting at the altar. Straightening his cufflinks. Checking his watch.

I let go of Milan's arm.

"You don't have to do this," he said quietly.

"Yes," I said. "I do."

He nodded. He reached past me and pushed the doors open.

I walked in.

---

The string quartet stopped mid-phrase. The violinist's bow hung in the air.

Four hundred heads turned.

I walked down the aisle. My heels clicked on the marble. The bloodstained dress dragged behind me. I kept my eyes forward.

The guests didn't move. Didn't breathe. I heard someone gasp. Then another. A woman in the third row put her hand over her mouth.

I kept walking.

Kaden stood at the altar. He wore his Tom Ford suit. His cufflinks were perfectly aligned. His hair was slicked back. He looked like a magazine cover.

Then he saw me.

His face went white. His mouth opened. He took a step back.

I stopped in front of him.

The ballroom was silent. Not a cough. Not a whisper. Just the sound of my breathing and the faint rustle of silk.

I looked at him. His eyes moved from my face to my dress. To the blood. He stared at the red stain across my stomach.

"Ariah," he said. His voice cracked. "What—"

"I lost the baby," I said.

My voice carried. Clear. Steady. Every person in the room heard it.

Kaden's face didn't move. He just stared at me.

"Your baby," I said. "The one the doctors said you could never have. The miracle. I was going to tell you after the wedding."

I saw his throat move. He swallowed.

"But I lost it," I said. "Last night. After you pushed me."

Someone in the audience stood up. Then another. Whispers started. Low and sharp.

Kaden reached for me. "Ariah, I didn't—"

I stepped back.

"Don't," I said.

His hand dropped.

I turned and looked at the guests. Rows and rows of them. Manhattan's elite. The Romero family. Kaden's business partners. My father's colleagues.

I saw Macie in the fifth row. She wore a navy dress. Her face was frozen.

I saw Eleanor Romero in the front row. She was standing. Her hands gripped the back of the pew. Her face was stone.

I turned back to Kaden.

"You said marrying me was a debt," I said. "A way to pay back my mother. You told Macie that last night. I heard you."

Kaden's jaw tightened. "That's not—"

"You gave her my tie clip," I said. "The one I made for you. The one with my fingerprints on it. You gave it to her like it was nothing."

His face went pale again.

"So here's what I'm giving you," I said. "Nothing. No wedding. No wife. No baby. No debt."

I pulled the engagement ring off my finger. I held it out.

He didn't take it.

I dropped it. It hit the marble and rolled. The sound echoed through the silent ballroom.

I turned and walked back down the aisle.

Milan was waiting by the doors. He didn't say anything. He just offered his arm again.

I took it.

Behind me, I heard Eleanor Romero's voice. Sharp. Cold.

"Kaden," she said. "Come here."

I didn't look back.

Milan and I walked out of the ballroom. The doors closed behind us.

The last thing I heard was the sound of Eleanor's hand meeting Kaden's face.
