After My Groom Abandoned Me at Our Engagement Party

For seven years, I molded myself into Sebastian's ideal—the champagne Vera Wang gown he barely registered, the smile I never let slip. At the Plaza, three hundred of Manhattan's elite circle us, the golden couple. Then he leaves me stranded at our own engagement party, exposed and alone before the crowd. In that glittering ballroom, every small erasure I'd trained myself to overlook becomes impossible to ignore. The woman who spent years chasing his approval must now face what remains once it's gone.

Chapter 1

The Plaza ballroom glittered like a diamond-encrusted vault, three hundred of Manhattan's elite orbiting around us like satellites drawn to the golden couple at the center. I smoothed the silk of my couture gown—a Vera Wang creation Sebastian had barely glanced at when I'd chosen it, though I'd spent weeks ensuring every detail would meet his world's exacting standards. The dress was the color of champagne, with a neckline that revealed just enough to be elegant rather than daring. Everything calculated for his approval, as always.

Sebastian stood beside me, his profile sharp against the crystal chandeliers, his hand resting at the small of my back with the practiced precision of a man who knew exactly how to position his assets. He wore the midnight blue Tom Ford I'd helped him select, though he'd never acknowledge that my eye had found it first. Seven years of these small erasures had become so natural that I barely noticed them anymore.

"You look beautiful," he said, his voice carrying that particular quality of distracted appreciation, like someone complimenting the weather while checking their watch. I smiled anyway, because that's what I did. What I'd always done.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. I saw his jaw tighten slightly—the only visible sign of his irritation at the interruption. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and I watched something shift in his expression. A flicker of something I couldn't name crossed his features, then was gone, replaced by the mask of composure I knew so well.

"Excuse me," he said, already turning away. "I need to handle this."

I nodded, because that's what I did. What I'd always done. "Of course. Take your time."

He walked away without another word, without looking back, his broad shoulders cutting through the crowd like a blade. I stood alone in my perfect gown, the champagne flute growing warm in my hand, watching the space between us widen with each step he took toward the exit.

Then his phone buzzed again. He stopped, looked at it again, and this time I saw his face go white. He turned back toward me, but his eyes were unfocused, searching the room not for me but for an escape route. Without a word, he grabbed his coat from the chair where he'd left it and strode toward the ballroom doors.

Three hundred heads turned. The string quartet faltered mid-note. Conversations died like candles in a draft. And I stood there, still holding my champagne, still wearing the dress I'd chosen for his approval, watching the man I'd built my life around walk away from me without explanation, without apology, without even meeting my eyes.

Something inside me—something that had been bending for seven years—finally snapped. But instead of breaking, it ignited.

I set down my glass with deliberate care. I walked to the stage where the microphone stood, its silver surface gleaming under the lights. The room fell silent as I took it in my hands. My fingers were trembling, but my voice, when it came, was steady as stone.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I said, looking out at the sea of shocked faces. "I apologize for the confusion, but I believe there's been a misunderstanding. The engagement is off. Thank you for coming. Please, enjoy the champagne. It's excellent."

I set the microphone down and walked off the stage, my heels clicking against the marble floor like the final notes of a symphony reaching its conclusion. I didn't look back at the chaos erupting behind me. I didn't need to.

In the Uber home, I pulled out my phone and photographed the pink diamond ring—the one he'd placed on my finger with such practiced ease, the one that had cost more than most people's cars, the one I'd worn like a shackle disguised as jewelry. I posted it for sale on my Instagram story with a simple caption: "For sale. Never worn. DM for details."

By three in the morning, I had packed one suitcase—just the essentials, nothing he'd given me, nothing that wasn't truly mine. I left the key to the Tribeca penthouse on the kitchen counter, a small silver circle that had once felt like the key to my future. Now it felt like nothing at all.

I took a cab to Brooklyn, to Sloan's apartment, where her door was already open and the kettle was already on, as though she'd been expecting this night for seven years. Maybe she had.

Three days later, my phone rang. Sebastian's name flashed on the screen. I answered, not because I wanted to hear his voice, but because I needed to end this properly.

"Ivory," he said, his tone carrying the casual authority of a man who believed his absence was a temporary tantrum I should have moved past by now. "Angelica's in the hospital. She needs that soup you make. The one with the rice and chicken. Can you bring it to Mount Sinai this afternoon? She's asking for you."

I listened to the entire request in silence. When he finished, I closed my eyes and felt something final settle in my chest.

"We're done, Sebastian," I said, and hung up. Then I blocked his number, and every other number associated with him, and felt the last wall of my old life crumble into dust.
