Chapter 4

I picked the café on purpose.

Small place. West Village. The kind of spot where nobody cared who you were. Mismatched chairs, steamed-up windows, jazz from a speaker in the corner that nobody had turned up loud enough to matter. I got there fifteen minutes early and took the table by the wall.

Peyton arrived exactly on time. She always did. Punctuality was one of her performances.

She looked good. She always looked good. Cream coat, dark hair loose around her shoulders, a small smile already arranged on her face before she'd even pulled out the chair. Like she'd practiced it in the cab over.

"Adalynn." She said my name the way you'd say a brand you'd stopped buying.

"Sit down," I said.

She sat. She ordered an oat milk latte without looking at the menu. I wrapped both hands around my coffee cup and let the warmth travel up into my palms.

I didn't talk about Cillian. Not once.

I talked about my mother. About the night my father came home late and my mother already knew, the way women always know, and the sound she made in the kitchen that I heard from the top of the stairs. I talked about the brother I never got to meet. Six months along when it happened. My mother had already picked a name. She never told anyone what it was. She stopped talking about it the day she left the hospital, and she never started again.

Peyton's expression didn't change. She stirred her latte with a thin metal spoon, slow circles, watching me the way you watch something mildly interesting on television.

"That must have been very hard for you," she said.

Her voice was warm. Practiced. The voice of a woman who had learned exactly how much sympathy to perform without meaning any of it.

I looked at her. I thought about my mother in a Seattle hospital bed, smaller every time I visited, the window always facing the wrong direction. I thought about the name she never said out loud.

I kept my hands still around the cup.

"I'm not here to fight," I said. "I just wanted you to know that I remember. All of it. Every piece."

Something shifted behind her eyes. Not guilt. Closer to calculation.

"You were never going to be enough for him," she said. Pleasant. Easy. Like we were discussing the weather rolling in off the Hudson. "Some of us are just born for better things."

I looked at her for a moment.

Then I set down my cup. I picked up my bag. I left two twenties on the table for the bill.

"Thank you for your time," I said.

I walked out into the cold. The door swung shut behind me. My breath came out in a white cloud and disappeared.

I didn't look back.

---

She called him that evening. I didn't know the exact words she used. I didn't need to. I knew Peyton. I knew how she built a story, brick by careful brick, until it looked like the only possible truth.

Kingsley told me the next morning. His voice was flat and clipped, the way it got when he was working hard to stay calm.

"His men got to your car last night. Brake line. Clean cut, not a full sever. Enough to hold for a few miles, then fail."

I was standing in the center of my kitchen. The morning light came through the window in a long pale stripe across the floor. I watched it and said nothing.

"Ada."

"How long until failure?"

A pause. "Highway speed? Maybe ten minutes. City traffic, longer. But once it goes—"

"I understand."

"I'm sending my guy to fix it this morning. He can be there in—"

"Don't fix the brakes."

Silence.

"Addie—"

"Don't fix them, King." My voice was steady. I was surprised how steady it was. "I know what I'm doing."

Another silence. Longer. I could hear him breathing.

"Tell me you have a plan," he said finally.

"I have a plan."

"A real one. Not a—"

"A real one. I promise." I paused. "I need two more days. Can you have everything ready in two days?"

The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere outside, a taxi horn blared twice and faded.

"Yes," Kingsley said. Low. Careful. "Yes, I can do that."

"Good."

I hung up.

I stood in the kitchen for a little while longer. The light on the floor moved a half inch as the clouds shifted outside. I thought about Cillian ordering it. Not in anger. Not in a rage. Just a phone call, the same voice he used for hotel acquisitions, and then two men with tools and a brake line.

He hadn't even needed to think about it.

I went to the window. The street below was ordinary. People walking dogs. A delivery truck double-parked. The city doing what the city always did, indifferent and enormous and completely unaware.

He wanted me to disappear.

Fine.

I would disappear so completely that he would spend the rest of his life trying to find the edges of the hole I left behind.

I went to the desk. I opened the laptop. I started making a list.
