Chapter 3

The heavy double doors of the Great Hall banged open.

Callen stormed inside, his face flushed dark red from bourbon. He still wore his black-and-gold heir tunic, but his collar was unbuttoned, his tie crooked. He scanned the hall, sneering, clearly expecting to find me curled up in some corner, sobbing over his rejection.

"Still playing dress-up, Lola?" he called out, his voice loud and obnoxious. "You actually thought a bluff would—"

He stopped dead.

The air pressure in the room plummeted. The temperature dropped so fast my breath plumed faintly in the air.

Behind Callen, the massive outer gates swung wide without a sound.

Demetrius Hamilton walked through the threshold.

He was broad-shouldered and towering, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit and a long black coat that brushed the floor. But it wasn't his clothes that silenced the room.

It was his aura.

A crushing, ancient wave of pure Lycan sovereignty flooded the hall. It didn't just ripple through the air—it slammed down like physical iron.

Gasps tore from every throat. Instinct overrode pride in an instant. Across the room, seasoned warriors dropped to their knees, their chins dropping to their chests. Ashlyn gave a small, choked shriek and hit the carpet hard.

Callen froze. Veins bulged along his neck as he fought the biological command. He tried to lock his knees, his jaw trembling with the effort. But against a Lycan King, his Alpha blood was nothing. His legs gave out.

*Crack.*

Callen slammed down onto one knee, his head forced downward, his bare neck exposed in complete submission.

Demetrius didn't even look at him. He stepped past his kneeling nephew as if Callen were nothing more than dirt on the floorboards.

He walked straight down the center aisle, his boots clicking in a slow, steady rhythm.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but I forced my chin up. I refused to look down.

Demetrius stopped right in front of me. His face was carved from granite, cold and striking, with sharp cheekbones and obsidian eyes that carried the weight of a century.

He reached into the inner breast pocket of his coat and pulled out a heavy silver band set with a pale, glowing moonstone.

The Lycan Queen’s ring.

He took my left hand. His skin was warm, his touch remarkably steady. Without a word, he slid the heavy ring onto my finger. It fit as if it had been forged for my hand alone.

Then he leaned in closer to complete the ceremony.

His breath brushed against the curve of my jaw, and the moment our bodies drew near, my scent must have wrapped around him. Wild honeysuckle laced with winter frost.

Demetrius froze.

A violent shiver ripped through his massive frame.

I felt the shift before I saw it. His pupils dilated until his obsidian eyes flared into a blinding, feral gold. His inner wolf surged forward with a hunger so primal it rattled the stone beneath our feet.

His Lycan aura didn't just spike—it doubled.

The pressure was suffocating. Every wolf who had managed to raise their head was shoved flat against the floor.

"Mine," a voice rumbled deep in his chest. It didn't sound human.

Before I could draw another breath, his hand cupped the back of my neck. His fingers tangled in my hair, tilting my head back.

He sank his fangs into the curve of my shoulder.

A sharp gasp tore from my lips.

There was no cold ache this time. No hollowness.

Pure, white-hot fire erupted in my veins. The icy rejection scar from that morning was incinerated instantly, burned away like dry grass.

A brilliant, visible light flared along the hollow of my neck, illuminating the dim hall with a golden glow. The sheer force of the bond sent a biological shockwave through the entire room, vibrating in the marrow of every wolf present.

And then, the mate link tore wide open.

A staggering flood of emotion rushed into my mind. It knocked the air from my lungs.

This wasn't a sudden political arrangement. Through the link, I felt the truth of his wolf: a century of absolute isolation, of turning away every woman alive—because his beast had been starving for this exact scent.

He had been waiting for me.

An hour later, the post-ceremony banquet was wrapped in a suffocating hush.

I sat at the head of the high table, resting in the high-backed throne Callen had always promised to Ashlyn. Demetrius sat right beside me, one broad hand resting over mine on the dark wood. His touch was warm, claiming, and completely unyielding.

Down in the lower tier, Callen slumped in his chair. He was shaking, sweating through his shirt, nursing a glass of whiskey with white knuckles. Ashlyn sat beside him, pale and terrified, her eyes darting nervously toward the exits.

Demetrius raised his glass of dark wine. His voice was low, but it sliced through the silence like a blade.

"Nephew."

Callen flinched.

"Stand," Demetrius commanded.

He used the Alpha tone. The ancient authority vibrated through the glassware on the tables.

Callen’s body moved against his will. He stood up, trembling with humiliating fury.

"Bow your head," Demetrius said, his dark eyes fixed on him. "And address her as your Queen."

A vicious, unhinged snarl ripped from Callen’s mouth. The alcohol and his wounded pride stripped away whatever common sense he had left.

"No!" Callen roared, his face twisting with venom. "I won't bow to my own scraps! She's nothing but an arrange—"

*Crack.*

Demetrius moved faster than lightning. He didn't shift. He didn't even spill a drop of wine from the glass in his left hand.

His right backhand struck Callen across the jaw with brutal, devastating force.

Callen went airborne. He flew twenty feet across the room, smashing violently into the stone hearth. A wooden side table splintered beneath him. He hit the floor in a heap of broken oak, coughing up dark blood and clutching his shattered jaw.

Demetrius calmly turned his hand over, adjusting his silver cufflink. His voice remained smooth, deadly, and quiet.

"As of this moment, Callen Hamilton is stripped of his title as heir-apparent of Ironveil." Demetrius swept his cold gaze over the hall. "You are nothing in this pack."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Callen groaned on the floor, dragging himself up on trembling elbows. He looked around wildly, waiting for his warriors, his council, or his friends to speak up.

Not a single wolf moved.

The very elders who had kissed his boots that morning turned their heads away, unwilling to even meet his eye.
