Chapter 2

The ceiling was white. Not warm white. Hospital white, the kind that hums under fluorescent light and makes everything look like it's already dead.

I blinked at it for a long time before I understood I was awake.

My throat felt like I'd swallowed glass. My arms were wrapped in gauze from wrist to elbow, and when I tried to lift one, pain shot straight up into my shoulder and I let it drop again. Somewhere to my left, a monitor beeped in a steady, indifferent rhythm. Keeping time for a heart that apparently still wanted to work, even now.

I turned my head. No flowers on the table. No balloon, no card, no half-eaten box of chocolates from a worried visitor. Just a plastic cup of water with a bent straw and a clipboard hanging off the end of the bed.

A nurse came in to check my IV. Young, kind eyes, name tag that said PRIYA.

"You're lucky," she said, tapping the bag. "Smoke inhalation like that, another few minutes and it would've been a different conversation."

"How long have I been here?" My voice came out in pieces.

"Since last night. It's almost noon." She made a note on the chart. "You have someone we should call? Family, a partner? We tried the emergency contact on your insurance card this morning, but it went to voicemail."

"That's fine," I said. "Don't call again."

She hesitated like she wanted to ask more, then didn't. Nurses learn fast which questions have answers nobody wants to say out loud.

"Has anyone come by?" I asked, even though I already knew. I don't know why I made her say it.

"No one's checked in yet." She said it gently, like she could tell it mattered. "I'm sorry."

I looked back at the ceiling. Something in my chest that used to ache — every day, for six years, a low dull ache I'd gotten so used to I stopped calling it pain — went quiet. Not better. Quiet. Like a room after someone finally stops screaming in it.

I didn't cry. I want to remember that. I just lay there and watched the light move across the white tiles, and somewhere in my head I heard his voice again, soft and warm through the phone while I was choking on smoke. Baby, stop, I'm trying to pour the wine. Who is it? Nobody. Wrong number.

Wrong number.

Six years, and I was a wrong number.

It was almost three in the afternoon when the door finally opened.

Dawson walked in first. Coat still on, cheeks pink from the cold outside, like a man who'd had a perfectly nice day. And half a step behind him, tucked slightly into his side the way you'd guide someone you were proud to be seen with, was Ainara.

She had a paper coffee cup in each hand. She held one out toward the nurses' station like an offering. "I brought some for the staff, I hope that's okay, you guys have been so amazing—"

"This is so nice of you," Priya said, smiling.

"This is Ainara," Dawson said, easy, practiced, an arm sliding around her waist. "My girlfriend. She wanted to come check on a colleague from work." He said colleague the way you'd say stranger. Like the word cost him nothing.

He did not look at me. Not once. Not the way you look at someone you almost lost. Not the way you look at anyone at all.

"That's so sweet," Priya said, and left to go check another room, and I lay there in my bandages and watched the two of them stand at the foot of my bed like they were visiting a stranger's grandmother.

Ainara's phone buzzed. She checked it, made a small apologetic face. "I have to take this, it's my mom. I'll be right outside."

The door clicked shut behind her.

And Dawson leaned down.

Close. Close enough that I caught the cologne — the one I'd bought him three Christmases ago, the one he said made him feel like someone worth looking at twice. His face was inches from mine, over the bed where I'd nearly died, and his eyes were flat and cold and utterly without apology.

"Don't say anything that upsets her," he said, quiet, controlled. Like he was giving instructions to staff. "Don't make this about you. You know exactly what this is."

I looked at him. Really looked. I searched his face for something — anything — the boy who carried my books in the rain, the man who used to fall asleep with his hand on my stomach and murmur my future wife against my hair.

There was nothing there. Just a stranger in a familiar coat, wearing a watch I paid for, warning me to be quiet in the hospital bed I'd nearly died in because I called him for help.

Something in my chest that had been hanging on by one last thread, some small stubborn hope I hadn't even known I was still keeping — it didn't break loudly. It didn't shatter. It just let go, clean and silent, the way a hand finally opens after holding on too long.

I didn't feel pain. I didn't feel rage.

I felt nothing at all.

"Okay," I said.

He straightened up, satisfied, and the door opened, and Ainara came back in smiling with her phone still in her hand, and I watched them both and thought, very clearly, for the first time in six years:

I am done.
