Chapter 3

I called Iliana at 2 AM.

No preamble. No explanation. Just: "I need you to draft a prenuptial framework by morning. I'll explain when you get here."

She didn't ask a single question. Just said, "Forty minutes," and hung up.

She arrived in thirty-eight, still in her coat, a coffee carrier in one hand and her laptop bag over her shoulder. I opened the door and she walked straight to the kitchen table, set everything down, and opened her computer.

We worked for three hours. She drafted. I reviewed. I revised. She redrafted. The apartment was quiet except for the low hum of the refrigerator and the occasional tap of keys. Outside, the city did what it always did — never fully dark, never fully still.

When the framework was done, Iliana set her pen down.

She looked at the papers for a moment. Then she looked at me.

"I should have told you to leave him two years ago," she said. Flat. No cushioning. "I'm sorry I didn't."

I held her gaze. She didn't look away, which told me she'd been holding that sentence for a long time and had decided tonight was the night to finally put it down.

"I know," I said.

She nodded once. That was all either of us needed it to be.

"Start on the Williamson dissolution next," I said, and slid her a fresh folder.

She pulled it open without missing a beat. I refilled both our coffees.

---

The Williamson family attorney's office was on the forty-second floor of a Midtown tower that had probably never seen a meeting with actual warmth in it. All glass and gray marble. A conference table long enough to signal that proximity was not the goal.

Carter Williamson sat across from me. Sixty-three years old, silver-haired, and as expressive as a closing statement. He had brought two attorneys and a PR consultant, which told me everything I needed to know about his priorities. This wasn't about his son. This was about the family's Q4 narrative.

"We'd like to keep this quiet," Carter said. "For both our sakes."

"That's not a concern of mine," I said.

His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. I kept going, walking through the asset clauses with my attorney, point by point. The shared investment vehicles. The joint venture structures. The liability allocations.

We were on the third page when the door opened.

Elias.

Tie loose. Eyes red at the rims. He'd come straight here from somewhere — his expression said he'd been rehearsing what to say in a cab for the last twenty minutes and had thrown all of it out the moment he walked in.

"Nina." His voice landed somewhere between a command and a plea.

I didn't look up from the document.

"You don't mean this," he said. He moved around the end of the table. Carter said his name once, low and sharp. Elias ignored him. "This is what you do. You go quiet when you're hurt. I know you. You want me to come after you."

I turned to the final page.

"Nina. Look at me."

I signed.

The room went very still.

Elias stood there. I capped my pen and handed the pages to my attorney.

"I'll let your team handle the filing," I said to Carter. Then I picked up my bag, pushed back my chair, and walked to the door.

"Nina." Elias's voice cracked on the second syllable. Just slightly. Just enough.

I stepped into the hallway and let the door close behind me.

---

My penthouse was quiet when I got home. I changed out of the meeting clothes, poured a glass of water I didn't drink, and sat on the edge of the bed in the dark for a while.

Not grieving. Just — present. Letting the day settle.

At 1 AM, my phone lit up. Then, faintly, through the front door — knocking. Then louder.

"Nina."

Elias. He'd made it past the lobby somehow. I could picture it — charming some resident by the door, smiling the smile that worked on everyone.

I got up. I walked to the front door and stood on my side of it. I didn't open it. I put my hand flat against the wood and listened.

"I know you're there." His voice was uneven. Stripped of its usual architecture. "I'm not going to keep knocking if you don't want me to. I just — I need you to hear this."

A pause. A long one.

"My mother didn't leave for business." His voice dropped. "She was paid out. Carter gave her a number and she took it. I was eleven. They told me it was a relocation. I found the wire transfer documents when I was nineteen and I never — I never told anyone that."

I stood very still.

"I've been terrified my whole life," he said. "That everyone eventually decides the terms aren't worth it. So I—" He stopped. Started again. "So I made you prove it. Over and over. I kept waiting for you to leave so I could survive it instead of being blindsided." His voice broke on the last word, the fracture real and raw in a way I had never heard from him in six years. "And now you're leaving and I don't know how to survive it."

I stood there with my palm against the door and felt the weight of everything on the other side of it — all the years, all the tests, all the nights I'd quietly rebuilt myself after whatever he'd knocked down. I understood him. That was the hardest part. I finally, completely understood him.

Understanding wasn't the same as staying.

"Elias," I said. My voice came out steady and low. "I'm not your proof of concept."

Silence.

"Go home."

I heard him exhale — shaky, ragged — against the door. Then nothing for a long moment. Then the soft sound of his footsteps moving back down the hall.

I stood there with my hand still on the wood until I heard the elevator arrive.

When it was quiet again, I dropped my forehead to the door for just a moment. One breath. Then I straightened up, turned around, and walked back to my bedroom.

Monday was two days away.

There was work to do.
