After My Fiancé Locked Me in a Psychiatric Ward Chapter 1
The phone sat on the tray like a lit match.
I stared at it. Katie had left it there when she rushed out to yell at someone in the hallway. I could hear her voice echoing off the institutional green walls. Something about shift changes. Something about paperwork. I didn't care. My fingers moved before my brain caught up.
The screen was unlocked.
I tapped it. A video was playing. Live. The red dot in the corner pulsed like a heartbeat. The Plaza Hotel, the banner said. I knew that place. I'd been there once, years ago, before everything went dark.
The camera panned across a ballroom. White flowers everywhere. Chandeliers throwing light like broken glass. People in suits and gowns, champagne flutes catching the glow. The comments scrolled fast on the side of the screen. *So beautiful. She's stunning. They're perfect together.*
Then I saw him.
Lucian.
He stood at the front of the room in a black tuxedo, smiling that smile I used to think was just for me. The one that made me feel like I was the only person in the world. He was holding someone's hand. The camera shifted.
Margo.
She wore white. A gown with lace sleeves and a train that pooled around her feet like spilled milk. Her hair was pinned up. Diamonds at her throat. She was crying, but the pretty kind of crying. The kind that makes people say you look radiant.
I couldn't breathe.
The officiant said something I didn't hear. Lucian leaned in. Margo tilted her face up. They kissed. The room exploded in applause. The camera zoomed in on their hands.
That's when I saw it.
The ring.
*The Nightingale.*
I designed that ring eighteen months ago. Right here. In this room. I sketched it on the back of a medication log because they wouldn't give me real paper that day. A platinum band with a single emerald-cut diamond, flanked by two smaller stones set at angles like wings in flight. I'd hidden an inscription inside the band. Three words. *Dorothy's light lives.*
Lucian told me it was lost. He said it got misplaced during a facility transfer. He held my hand when he said it. He looked sad.
Now it was on Margo's finger.
The camera pulled back. A new banner scrolled across the bottom of the screen. *Exclusive: Inside the Wedding of Jewelry Icon Margo Stevens and Financier Lucian Andrews.*
Jewelry icon.
I looked at the screen. Really looked.
Behind the couple, there was a display. Glass cases on pedestals. Soft lighting. A small gold plaque. *Margo Stevens: Greatest Works.*
I knew every piece.
The *Siren's Tear* necklace. I made that during a manic episode two years ago when they upped my medication and I couldn't sleep for three days. A sapphire pendant shaped like a falling drop, surrounded by tiny diamonds that looked like spray.
The *Broken Halo* earrings. I sketched those the night I dreamed about my mother. Two circles of white gold, one whole, one fractured. I'd cried while I drew them.
The *Ember and Ash* bracelet. The *Vesper* choker. The *Thorn Crown* ring.
All mine.
All labeled with her name.
My hands started shaking. The phone slipped. I caught it. The comments kept scrolling. *She's a genius. Her designs are so emotional. She deserves everything.*
I opened my mouth. No sound came out at first. Then it did.
I screamed.
The door slammed open. Katie stood there, her face twisted with irritation. She looked at me. Looked at the phone. Her expression shifted. Not to concern. To something worse.
Amusement.
"Oh honey," she said slowly. She walked over and plucked the phone from my hands like I was a child holding something I shouldn't. "You didn't know?"
I couldn't speak. My throat was raw.
"Everyone knows," Katie continued. She tucked the phone into her scrubs pocket. "It's been all over the news for years. Margo Stevens. The jewelry designer. She's, like, famous famous. And Lucian Andrews—" She let out a low whistle. "That man is fine. And rich. They're perfect for each other."
She looked down at me. I was still sitting on the edge of the bed, my hands clenched so tight my nails cut into my palms.
"You're the only fool who didn't," she said.
Then she left.
I sat in the dark for a long time. The medication was still in my system. It made everything feel like it was happening underwater. Slow. Muffled. Unreal.
But I knew.
I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger. Hard. The pain was sharp and clean. Real.
I knew those designs. I knew the exact emotional state I was in when I made each one. I knew what was hidden inside them. The inscriptions. The dates. The fragments of my mother's letter that I'd engraved in places no one would ever think to look unless they knew.
Margo didn't know.
Lucian didn't know.
But I did.
For the first time in five years, my mind was completely clear.
I knew exactly what I had to do.
