The call came on a Tuesday morning.

I was reviewing the Singapore acquisition when my assistant knocked. She came in holding a single printed email. Set it on my desk. Said nothing.

I looked at it.

The letterhead read *Rivera Group, International*. The request was formal, polished, carefully worded. An urgent meeting with Monarch Global's CEO regarding a strategic partnership opportunity. Significant mutual benefit. Time-sensitive. The contact name at the bottom was Dutton Rivera.

I read it twice. Then I set it down.

The room was quiet. Outside my window, Manhattan moved the way it always did—indifferent, relentless, completely unbothered by the fact that the man who had called me damaged goods three days ago was now asking to sit at my table.

I looked up at her. "Book the penthouse suite," I said. "Seat him facing the door."

She nodded once. No questions. No expression. Just that small, contained steadiness she'd carried since the morning I walked back in from JFK with cold eyes and a canceled ticket.

She turned to leave.

"And get Diane," I added.

She paused at the door. "Already on my list."

She left. I picked up the email again. Read the line near the bottom: *Mr. Rivera is prepared to discuss terms that would benefit both organizations significantly and looks forward to a productive conversation with your leadership team.*

Your leadership team.

He still didn't know. Of course he didn't. Monarch Global's CEO had never been photographed at an industry event, never given a press interview, never allowed a name to circulate in the rooms where Dutton Rivera operated. I'd built it that way deliberately. Privacy was a tool. I'd just never imagined I'd use it like this.

I set the email down and went back to Singapore.

Diane Okafor came up at noon. She was compact and precise, the kind of woman who moved through a room like she'd already mapped every exit. She sat across from me and opened her laptop without being asked.

"I've got the formatted messages ready," she said. "High resolution. Clean layout. Timestamped. The financial records are packaged separately." She looked up. "What's the trigger?"

"My signal," I said. "Not before."

She nodded. "I've got three outlets on standby. When you're ready, it goes everywhere simultaneously. Business press, general media, social. The financial angle alone will run for a week. The personal messages—" She paused. "Those will run longer."

I thought about the color-coded calendar. The bulk jewelry order. The template love letters with swapped-out names.

"Good," I said.

She closed the laptop. "Anything else?"

"Not yet."

After she left, I sat for a moment in the quiet. The city hummed beyond the glass. I thought about Marina Foster's photograph. Her posture. The champagne flute. The genuine smile.

She was flying into this meeting thinking she was watching her fiancé close a deal.

I picked up my phone and looked at the screenshot I'd saved. The one where Dutton called her too boring to sleep with but too rich to leave. The one where he described her the way you'd describe a piece of furniture.

I saved it again. Made sure it was in the folder.

My assistant came back at three. She stood in the doorway with a tablet in her hand and gave me the rundown the way she always did—efficient, sequential, no wasted words.

"Penthouse suite is confirmed for Thursday at two p.m. Rivera's assistant accepted within four minutes of receiving the invitation." A small pause. "Eager."

"Of course he is."

"Victor and the legal team are briefed. I told them it's a preliminary partnership evaluation. Standard NDA in place. Nothing else."

"Good. Keep it that way."

She nodded. "The display screen is calibrated. Your folder is set at the head position." She looked at me. "His chair faces the door."

I held her gaze. "And mine?"

"Faces the entrance directly." Another pause. "He'll see you the moment he walks in."

That was the point. No gradual realization. No slow creep of recognition. Just the door opening and the full, immediate weight of exactly how wrong he'd been.

I leaned back in my chair. "Thank you."

She started to go. Then stopped, the way she sometimes did when she had something to say that wasn't on the agenda.

"He has no idea," she said quietly. Not a question.

"None."

She looked at me for a moment. Something moved behind her eyes—not pity, nothing like that. Something older and quieter. The kind of feeling that comes from watching someone you respect get hurt and having to stay silent about it for a very long time.

"Thursday at two," she said.

"Thursday at two," I confirmed.

She left. The door clicked shut.

I turned back to the window. The sky over Manhattan was going gray at the edges, the afternoon light flattening out over the skyline. Somewhere across the city, Dutton Rivera was probably rehearsing his pitch. Choosing his suit. Practicing the smile.

He thought he was coming to save himself.

He had two days left to believe that.
