The elevator rose in silence. Fifty-two floors. I watched the numbers climb on the digital display and felt nothing. No anger. No tears. Just a strange, cold clarity that sat in my chest like ice.

The doors opened.

I stepped into the hallway. Dark wood panels. Soft recessed lighting. The Monarch Global logo etched into frosted glass at the end of the corridor. I'd walked this path a thousand times, but tonight it felt different. Tonight I wasn't sneaking back to my office after hours. I was coming home.

I pushed through the glass doors. The reception area was empty. The city lights spread out beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows—Manhattan at night, glittering and indifferent. I crossed to my office and unlocked the door.

My desk sat exactly as I'd left it. Laptop closed. Papers stacked in neat piles. The framed photograph of the skyline on the credenza—the view from my first office when Monarch Global was three people and a dream. I set my bag down. Hung my coat on the back of the door. Sat in my chair.

I opened the laptop.

The screen glowed to life. Emails loaded. Acquisition reports. Board updates. A contract waiting for my signature. I scrolled through them slowly, methodically. My fingers moved across the keyboard. I replied to the CFO about the Singapore deal. I approved the revised terms on the Philadelphia property acquisition. I flagged three items for tomorrow's executive meeting.

I did not think about Dutton.

I did not think about the messages.

I worked.

At some point, I noticed my coffee had gone cold. I drank it anyway.

When I finally looked up, the sky beyond the windows had shifted from black to deep blue. Dawn was coming. I closed the laptop. Stood. Stretched. My body felt stiff, but my mind felt clear. Clearer than it had in years.

I left the office and went home to my penthouse in Tribeca. I showered. Changed into fresh clothes—black trousers, a white silk blouse, nothing that required thought. I made more coffee and stood at my own window, watching the city wake up below me.

My phone sat on the counter. I hadn't looked at it since the car ride. I picked it up now. Dutton's messages were still there, a long thread of poison I'd never asked for. I scrolled to his contact. Stared at his name for a long moment.

Then I deleted it.

I blocked the number.

I put the phone down and finished my coffee.

By the time I returned to Monarch Global, the building was alive. Employees moved through the lobby. Elevators chimed. Voices echoed off marble floors. I rode up to fifty-two and walked past the assistant's desk. She wasn't in yet. I unlocked my office and sat down.

At eight-thirty, I heard her arrive. The soft click of heels. The rustle of her bag. A pause.

Then a knock on my door.

"Come in."

She stepped inside. Mid-forties. Sharp eyes. A navy dress and sensible heels. She'd been with me since the early days, back when I still answered my own phone and made my own coffee. She knew things about me no one else did. She'd never asked about Dutton directly, but I knew she'd noticed the long-distance calls, the carefully guarded calendar blocks, the way I sometimes left early on Fridays to catch a flight I never explained.

She looked at me now. Took in the black clothes. The cooling coffee. The expression on my face that I knew was calm and clear and absolutely final.

She didn't ask if I was okay.

She didn't ask what happened.

She closed the door behind her and said, "What do you need?"

I met her eyes. "Everything you can find on Dutton Rivera. Business operations. Financial backing. And Marina Foster."

She nodded once. "How soon?"

"Today."

"Done." She turned to leave, then paused. "Welcome back."

I didn't correct her. I just said, "Thank you."

She left. I heard her at her desk, already on the phone. Already working.

I pulled up my email and kept going.

By noon, she was back. She set a leather folder on my desk and opened it without ceremony. Inside were printouts, financial records, corporate filings. She'd highlighted the relevant sections in yellow.

"Dutton Rivera operates three entities in Europe," she said. "All registered in Paris. On paper, they look like mid-tier consulting firms with some tech acquisition on the side. In reality, they have no independent revenue. No assets. No intellectual property. Every dollar traces back to Marina Foster's family trust."

I scanned the documents. Saw the numbers. The shell companies. The carefully constructed facade.

"He's not self-made," I said quietly.

"He's not made at all," she replied. "He's a legal fiction. And Marina Foster is the only thing holding him up."

I closed the folder. Looked up at her. "Thank you."

She nodded. "What's next?"

I leaned back in my chair. The city stretched out behind me. Fifty-two floors above the people who thought they knew how the world worked.

"Now," I said, "we wait for him to come to us."
