Chapter 2

Kade chose a private club off Fifth Avenue, the kind of place that didn't put its name on the door. Dark wood paneling. Candles low on the tables. A pianist somewhere in the back playing something unhurried.

I got there first. I always get places first.

He came in at exactly eight, no apology for the punctuality, no performance of arriving. He saw me, crossed the room, and sat down across from me like we'd done this a hundred times. He was in a dark suit, no tie. The cuff of his left sleeve caught the candlelight as he reached for the water glass, and I saw it—a thin braid of faded color wrapped once around his wrist, mostly hidden, not entirely.

I looked back at my menu.

"You're not going to ask me anything," he said. Not a question.

"I figured you'd start."

The corner of his mouth moved. "Fair."

The waiter came. We ordered. Kade waited until the man was gone before he folded his hands on the table and looked at me directly.

"Two months," he said. "That's the window I'd want. Enough time to do it properly. Not so long that it becomes a spectacle."

"Two months works."

"The prenuptial agreement is already drafted. You should have your own attorney review it. I'd prefer that, actually."

That surprised me. I kept my face neutral. "Okay."

"The terms give you full discretionary control over a significant portion of my assets. It's not performative. It's what I want."

I studied him across the table. He wasn't nervous exactly, but he was careful. Choosing each word like a man who knew the difference between saying something and meaning it.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because I want you to know you can leave at any time and lose nothing." He said it simply. "That's not a condition. It's just true."

The pianist moved into something slower. I pressed my thumbnail lightly against my palm under the table, just once, then stopped.

"I'm not fragile," I said.

"I know that."

"I'm not doing this to hurt him."

Kade was quiet for a moment. "I know that too."

We ate. We talked about logistics—the venue, the guest list, the announcement. He had opinions but offered them without pressure, and twice he changed his position when I pushed back. I noticed that. I filed it away.

At the end of the night, standing on the sidewalk while his car idled at the curb, he said, "Whatever you want this to be—that's what it will be. I'm not in a hurry."

I looked at him. The city moved around us, indifferent.

"You've been patient for a long time already," I said.

Something shifted in his expression. Just briefly. "Yes."

I nodded once and got into my car.

I didn't sleep much that night.

The boutique was on Fifth Avenue, appointment-only, the kind of place that kept your measurements on file and offered you champagne before you'd touched a single bolt of fabric. My gown was already in progress—ivory silk, a clean structured bodice, a skirt that moved without fuss. I'd chosen it before everything fell apart, and I'd decided not to change it. It was mine. It had nothing to do with him.

The fitting was going well. The seamstress was pinning the side seam when the door opened.

I heard her voice before I saw her.

"Oh, I didn't realize anyone was using this room—I'm so sorry, I was just looking for the—" A bright, practiced laugh. "Hadley. What a surprise."

Chana Mendoza stood in the doorway in a cream blouse and wide-leg trousers, a shopping bag already on her arm. Her eyes moved over me in the gown with an expression that was almost admiring, which meant it was something else entirely.

"Chana." I kept my voice even.

The seamstress stepped back to retrieve something from the supply table. Thirty seconds. Maybe less.

That was all it took.

I didn't see exactly what she did. A snag, a pull—I heard the fabric before I felt it, a soft tearing sound from the bodice, delicate and irreversible. Then Chana made a sharp sound and stumbled backward, her hand flying to her stomach, and she went down against the chair behind her with a cry that filled the room.

The seamstress spun around. Two staff members appeared from the hallway.

"She pushed me." Chana's voice broke on cue. Her eyes were wet, her hand still pressed to her abdomen. "I don't—I just came in and she—"

"I didn't touch you," I said.

My voice was level. Completely level. I made sure.

But the seamstress was already kneeling beside Chana, and the two staff members were looking at me with the particular expression of people who have decided something and are waiting to see if I'll confirm it.

The tear in the bodice caught the light. Clean. Deliberate. The kind of damage that doesn't happen by accident.

Chana looked up at me from the floor. Through the tears, through the performance, her eyes were perfectly clear.

She smiled at me. Just barely.

I stood very still in my ruined gown and said nothing at all.
