Chapter 3

The Plaza ballroom looked like someone had set fire to a jewelry box. Chandeliers dripped crystal. Gold leaf crawled up the walls. Three hundred guests in black tie and borrowed diamonds stood in clusters, laughing too loud, drinking too fast, performing the particular kind of joy that required an audience.

I stood near the podium in champagne Dior, checking my phone. The toast was scheduled for nine. Greyson was supposed to meet me here at eight forty-five. It was eight forty-three.

Across the room, Cara Voss aimed her phone at a centerpiece, narrating for her followers. She had two million of them. She'd been livestreaming since cocktail hour.

Greyson appeared at eight forty-six, cutting through the crowd with his jacket unbuttoned and his bow tie slightly crooked. He reached me just as the event coordinator gave the two-minute signal.

"Ready?" I asked.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and went completely still.

I watched his face. The color drained from it in stages.

"Greyson?"

He looked up. His eyes were somewhere past my shoulder. "I have to go."

I blinked. "What?"

"Willow got into a fight at some club downtown. She's—" He shook his head, already stepping back. "I need to handle this."

"We're about to toast."

"You can do it." He was moving now, one hand already reaching for his phone again. "You're better at this than me anyway."

He turned and walked straight through the crowd toward the exit. People stepped aside for him. I watched his back disappear through the ballroom doors.

The event coordinator touched my elbow. "Ms. Burns? We're ready."

I looked at her. She was twenty-three, maybe, with an earpiece and a clipboard and the nervous energy of someone who'd been told this event could not go wrong.

"Of course," I said.

I walked to the podium. The room quieted in sections, like dominoes falling. By the time I reached the microphone, three hundred people were looking at me.

I smiled. It felt like putting on a coat I'd worn a thousand times.

"Good evening," I said. My voice carried clear and warm across the room. "Thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate this incredible partnership between the Burns and Harper families."

I didn't look for Greyson. I didn't mention his name. I spoke about legacy and gratitude and the future we were building together. I used 'we' in every sentence. The room stayed quiet. People smiled. Some nodded.

Cara Voss stood near the back, phone raised, recording everything.

I finished the speech and lifted my glass. "To family," I said. "And to the people who show up."

The room erupted. Glasses raised. Applause rolled through the crowd like a wave breaking.

I took one sip of champagne and set the glass down on the podium.

Then I walked off the stage and straight to the coat check.

---

The town car was waiting on Fifth Avenue. I slid into the back seat and closed the door. The driver pulled into traffic without asking where I wanted to go. He knew.

My phone started buzzing before we hit the first red light.

Texts. Dozens of them. I scrolled through without opening any.

*Are you okay?*

*Where did Greyson go?*

*That was so graceful, Elliott. You handled that beautifully.*

*Did you see Cara's livestream? It's everywhere.*

I opened Instagram. Cara's post was already at the top of my feed. The video showed me standing alone at the podium, smiling, raising my glass. The caption read: *Elliott Burns toasts alone as fiancé vanishes mid-event. Grace under pressure or trouble in paradise? 👀💔*

Two point one million views. Four thousand comments.

I closed the app.

There was one message from Salma, sent ten minutes ago. It said: *Say the word.*

I stared at it for a long time. Then I locked my phone and opened Notes instead.

I created a new file. Titled it: *Assets — Personal Registration Status.*

I started typing.

*1. Burns Holdings patents — IP registration under personal name, filed 2019*

*2. Client portfolio — direct relationships, not company-managed*

*3. Trust fund — independent of family holdings, accessible*

*4. Offshore accounts — Delaware shell company, operational since 2021*

I kept going. Fourteen line items. Every asset I'd built, registered, or controlled personally. Every piece of infrastructure I'd quietly moved into my own name over the last three years, not because I'd planned for this, but because I'd been raised to plan for everything.

The car stopped outside the Fifth Avenue building. The doorman opened my door.

"Good evening, Ms. Burns."

"Evening, Richard."

I walked through the lobby, into the elevator, up to the penthouse. I set my purse on the kitchen counter and poured myself a glass of water.

My phone buzzed again. I didn't look at it.

I opened my laptop instead and pulled up Marcus's contact information. I drafted an email, short and direct: *Need to discuss asset restructuring. Thursday afternoon. Please confirm.*

I hit send.

Then I sat at the counter in my champagne Dior gown, in the empty penthouse, and finished my list.

My hands didn't shake once.
