Chapter 1

The call came at seven in the morning.

I was in the middle of my second espresso, standing at the kitchen counter in the Fifth Avenue penthouse, reviewing donor reports for the Children's Hospital Foundation gala. My phone buzzed. Dad's name lit up the screen.

He never called this early.

I picked up. "Dad?"

"Elliott." His voice cracked. "We found her."

I set down my cup. The porcelain made a small sound against the marble. "Found who?"

"Willow. She's alive. She's in Nevada."

The room tilted. I pressed my palm flat on the counter. "What?"

"A private investigator located her outside Reno. In a trailer park." He was crying now. I'd heard my father cry exactly once before — the day Willow disappeared. "She's coming home, Elliott. She's finally coming home."

I opened my mouth. Closed it. Fifteen years collapsed into that silence.

"Elliott?" His voice sharpened. "Did you hear me?"

"Yes." My throat felt tight. "That's... that's incredible, Dad."

"We're flying out today to bring her back. Your mother is already packing." He exhaled, shaky and relieved. "I can't believe it. After all this time."

I waited for him to ask how I felt. If I was okay. If I needed anything.

He didn't.

"I'll see you when we get back," he said. "This is a miracle, Elliott. A real miracle."

The line went dead.

I stood there holding my phone, staring at the donor reports spread across the counter. The numbers blurred. I blinked and they sharpened again.

I picked up my espresso and finished it in one swallow.

---

Three days later, I came home to find my bedroom door open and my mother inside, pulling sheets off my bed.

I stopped in the doorway. "Mom?"

She looked up, arms full of linens. Her eyes were red but bright. "Oh, Elliott. Good. Can you help me carry these down to the laundry?"

I looked past her. The bed was stripped. My books were gone from the nightstand. The framed photo of me and Greyson at last year's Met Gala — the one I'd set on the dresser just last week — was missing.

"What's going on?" I asked slowly.

Mom smiled. It was thin and distracted. "Willow needs to feel at home. I'm setting up your old room for her."

I felt something cold slide down my spine. "My room."

"She's been through so much, sweetheart." Mom's voice softened into that particular tone she used when she wanted me to be reasonable. "She needs stability. Familiar things."

"She hasn't lived here since she was six."

"Exactly." Mom bundled the sheets tighter. "This was her room too. She'll remember it. It'll help her adjust."

I looked at the bare mattress. The empty shelves. "Where am I supposed to sleep?"

"The guest room is lovely. You've always said so."

I had said that. Once. About the view.

Mom stepped past me into the hallway, arms still full. "Can you grab those boxes by the closet? I'm donating some of your old things to make space. Willow didn't bring much with her."

I turned. Three cardboard boxes sat beside my closet door. I recognized the corner of my high school debate trophy sticking out of one.

"Mom," I said quietly.

She was already halfway down the hall. "Thank you, sweetheart. You're such a help."

I stood there until I heard her footsteps on the stairs. Then I walked into the guest room.

It was smaller. The closet was half the size. The view faced the building next door instead of Central Park.

I set my purse on the bed and straightened the decorative pillows.

Then I went back to work.

---

The gala at The Pierre was standing room only.

I wore ivory Valentino and diamond studs Greyson had given me for my birthday. I stood backstage with my parents, waiting for Dad's speech. Willow stood between them, tugging at the neckline of the borrowed gown Mom had pulled from my closet that afternoon.

She looked uncomfortable. Her tattoos showed through the sheer sleeves. Her hair was pulled back too tight.

Dad stepped up to the microphone. The ballroom went quiet.

"Fifteen years ago," he began, voice steady and strong, "our family suffered an unimaginable loss."

I watched from the wings. My hands were folded in front of me. I didn't move.

"Tonight," Dad continued, "I stand before you to share the greatest blessing of our lives. Our daughter Willow has come home."

The applause started before he finished. It built into a wave. People stood. Three hundred guests rose to their feet, clapping, some wiping their eyes.

Mom guided Willow onto the stage. Willow blinked under the lights, her expression somewhere between confusion and defiance. Dad wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

I stayed in the wings.

No one looked for me. No one gestured me forward.

I watched my father kiss Willow's temple. Watched my mother cry into her hands. Watched the standing ovation stretch into a full minute.

Then I walked back to my table, where Greyson was waiting.

He stood when I approached, his hand finding the small of my back. "You okay?" he murmured.

I smiled. It felt smooth and practiced. "Of course."

He kissed my cheek. "Your family must be so relieved."

"They are."

I sat down and reached for my wine glass. My fingers brushed the place card next to mine. It was crooked. I straightened it without thinking.

Greyson didn't notice.

On stage, the applause finally died down. Dad was still talking, his arm still around Willow. Mom stood beside them, radiant.

I took a sip of wine and set the glass down in the exact center of its coaster.

---

The next morning, Mom found me in the kitchen.

She set a piece of paper on the counter in front of me. I looked down. It was a handwritten list in her neat script.

*Willow's Schedule — October*

*Oct 12: Women's Philanthropy Luncheon, The Plaza*

*Oct 15: Museum Gala, MoMA*

*Oct 18: Burns Holdings Board Introduction*

*Oct 22: Junior League Tea*

The list went on.

"I need you to guide her through these," Mom said gently. "She doesn't know anyone yet. She'll need you."

I looked up. "You want me to take her to my events."

"Our events," Mom corrected. "You're so good at this, Elliott. You'll make her feel welcome."

I looked back down at the list. My name wasn't on it anywhere.

"Please, sweetheart," Mom said. She put her hand over mine. "She's your sister."

I pulled my hand back slowly and picked up the list.

"Of course," I said.

Mom smiled, relieved. "Thank you. I knew I could count on you."

She left the kitchen.

I stood there holding the list, reading it again.

Then I folded it in half, set it in my planner, and went to call my assistant.

There was work to do.
