Chapter 4

The gallery meeting was routine until Sloane Mercer shifted in her seat.

She was the senior curator. Sharp eyes. No patience for gossip. But she looked uncomfortable now.

"Liv," she said. "There's something you should know."

I looked up from the exhibition schedule.

"There's been talk," Sloane said. "Society circuit stuff. About you. And your ex-husband."

The room went quiet. Three other staff members suddenly found their notes very interesting.

"What kind of talk?" I asked.

Sloane hesitated. "That you're... pursuing him. That your son's paternity is questionable. That the gallery position is—" She stopped. "That someone's bankrolling you."

I felt the words land. Cold and deliberate. Designed to humiliate.

I straightened the catalog on the table in front of me. Aligned the corner with the edge. "Thank you for telling me."

"Liv—"

"It's fine," I said. "Let's move on to the spring exhibition."

We finished the meeting. I smiled. I nodded. I took notes.

When everyone left, I sat alone in the conference room and stared at the wall.

Camilla.

It had to be her. The whispers were too precise. Too calculated. She knew exactly which circles to target. Which words would spread fastest.

I stood up and walked to my office. The Oregon coast print hung on the wall behind my desk. I stopped in front of it and looked at the gray water, the rocky shoreline.

I heard footsteps in the hallway. Kaiser appeared in the doorway. He must have come straight from a meeting. Suit jacket, no tie, sleeves rolled to his forearms.

He looked at me. Then at the print.

"What happened?" he asked.

I told him. Every word Sloane had said. The rumors. The whispers.

Kaiser's expression didn't change. But something shifted behind his eyes. Something cold.

"She's your sister," I said quietly.

His jaw tightened. "She stopped being my sister a long time ago."

He crossed the office and stood beside me. He didn't touch me. Just stood there, close enough that I could feel the stillness radiating off him.

"Say the word," he said. "And this ends."

I shook my head. "Not yet."

He looked at me for a long moment. Then nodded once.

"All right," he said. "But when you're ready, I'll be there."

I leaned against him. Just for a second. Then I straightened and went back to work.

Quentin sat across from Vance Decker in a Midtown office that smelled like old coffee.

Decker was fifty. Ex-cop. Good at finding things people wanted hidden.

"The marriage records are clean," Decker said. He slid a folder across the desk. "Liv Edwards married someone seven years ago. Right after your divorce was finalized."

"Who?" Quentin asked.

Decker tapped the folder. "That's where it gets complicated. The husband's identity is buried. Corporate privacy layers. Shell companies. I can't get through it."

Quentin frowned. "What does that mean?"

"It means whoever he is, he doesn't want to be found. Could be a lot of things. Bad debt. Legal trouble. Or—" Decker shrugged. "Could be nothing. Could just be a guy who values his privacy."

Quentin opened the folder. Marriage certificate. Liv's signature. Another signature, illegible.

"What about the boy?" Quentin asked.

"No birth certificate on file that I can access. Probably sealed for the same reason."

Quentin closed the folder. He sat back in his chair.

"So she's essentially alone," he said.

Decker raised an eyebrow. "I didn't say that."

"A marriage on paper. A husband who hides behind lawyers. That's not a real marriage."

Decker said nothing. He'd seen this before. Men who heard what they wanted to hear.

Quentin stood up. "Keep looking. I want to know who he is."

"That'll cost more."

"I don't care."

Quentin left the office. He walked to his car and sat behind the wheel.

Liv was alone. She had to be. The marriage was a shield. A convenience. Something she'd done to protect herself after the divorce.

He could work with that.

He could fix that.

---

Three-fifteen. Tuesday afternoon.

I stood near the school entrance, waiting for Kole. Parents clustered in groups. Kids poured out of the building.

Then I heard heels on pavement. Fast. Deliberate.

Camilla Torres walked straight toward me.

She wore a cream coat and dark sunglasses. Her face was tight. Her hands were shaking.

She stopped five feet away. Parents turned to look.

"You," Camilla said. Her voice was loud. Too loud. "You can't leave him alone, can you?"

I said nothing.

"He's my husband," she said. "Mine. Not yours. You had your chance and you ruined it."

Kole appeared at my side. He looked up at Camilla, then at me. His hand found mine.

"You're pathetic," Camilla said. "Chasing a man who doesn't want you. Pretending that boy is—"

"You're frightening children," I said quietly. "Leave."

Camilla laughed. It was high and sharp. "You think you can just—"

Two school security officers appeared. One of them stepped between us.

"Ma'am," he said to Camilla. "You need to leave the premises."

"I'm not done—"

"Now, ma'am."

Camilla looked at me. Her face was red. Her sunglasses had slipped down her nose.

The officers walked her toward the parking lot. She didn't fight them. But she looked back once. Her eyes locked on mine.

I held Kole's hand and watched her go.

Parents were staring. Whispering. I ignored them.

"Mom?" Kole's voice was small. "Who was that lady?"

"Nobody," I said. "Let's go home."

We walked to the car. I buckled him in. My hands were steady.

Before I drove away, I went back inside. I found the principal's office.

"I need to file an incident report," I said.

Principal Morris looked up. "What happened?"

I told her. Every word. Every witness.

She wrote it down. "We'll keep this on file. If she returns, we'll contact the police immediately."

"Thank you."

I walked back to the car. Kole was quiet in the backseat.

"Can we get pizza?" he asked.

"Yeah," I said. "We can get pizza."

I drove home. My phone buzzed. A text from Kaiser.

*Are you all right?*

I typed back: *Yes. Tell you tonight.*

I set the phone down and kept driving.

Camilla had crossed a line. She'd brought it to my son's school. She'd made it public.

That was a mistake.

I would document everything. I would build the case. And when the moment came, I would hand it to Kaiser and watch him dismantle her piece by piece.

But not yet.

Not yet.
