Chapter 1

I arrived five minutes early to Kole's field day. It was a habit I couldn't shake. Being late felt like losing control, and I'd lost enough already.

The elementary school field was packed with parents. Bright banners snapped in the spring wind. Kids in colored team shirts ran in circles, shouting. I held my coffee and stood near the fence, scanning for my son.

Kole spotted me first. He broke from his classmates and sprinted over, all seven years of him crashing into my legs.

"Mom! Did you see? We're doing relay races!"

I smiled and ran my hand through his dark hair. "I saw. You ready?"

"I'm the fastest in my class," he said seriously. "Well, maybe second fastest. But I'm gonna win today."

"I believe you."

He hugged me once more, then darted back to his team. I watched him go. He had Kaiser's confidence and my eyes. Strangers always said he looked like both of us, which was true in the way that mattered.

This was the life I built. Quiet. Whole. Enough.

I took a sip of coffee and let myself feel it — the warmth of the sun, the sound of children laughing, the simple fact that I was here and my son was happy.

Then I saw him.

Quentin Adams stood thirty feet away, near the edge of the crowd. He wore a tailored navy suit, slightly too formal for a school field day. His hair was perfect. His posture was perfect. He looked exactly like the man I'd divorced seven years ago, except older around the eyes.

Our gazes locked.

I went very still. My coffee cup stopped halfway to my lips.

He didn't move either. Just stared at me like he'd seen a ghost.

I knew why he was here. Camilla's daughter went to the school next door. They were sharing the field today for the event. I'd known there was a chance I'd run into her. I hadn't thought about him.

I should've thought about him.

Quentin's gaze slid away from me, tracking across the field. I knew the exact moment he found Kole. His expression shifted — surprise, then something sharper. Calculation. Possession.

He was doing the math.

Kole was six years and ten months old. I'd filed for divorce seven years and four months ago. To someone who didn't know the truth, the timeline would look close. Close enough to wonder. Close enough to convince yourself.

I watched Quentin's face harden with certainty, and my stomach dropped.

He thought Kole was his.

I set my coffee on the ground. My hands were steady, but my pulse wasn't. I walked onto the field, moving through clusters of parents and children, keeping my face calm.

Kole was crouched with his relay team, listening to a teacher explain the rules. I stopped beside him and touched his shoulder.

"Hey, buddy. We need to go."

He looked up, confused. "But Mom, the race is starting!"

"I know. Something came up."

"But I didn't even run yet!"

I crouched down to his level and kept my voice gentle. "I'm sorry. We'll come to the next one, I promise."

His face fell. He looked at his teammates, then back at me. "Is something wrong?"

"No. I just need us to leave now."

He didn't argue. He stood up and took my hand. That was Kole — he trusted me, even when he didn't understand.

I straightened and turned back toward the parking lot. I didn't look at Quentin. I didn't need to. I could feel his eyes on us the entire walk off the field.

Kole was quiet in the car. He stared out the window, his small hands folded in his lap.

"I'm sorry," I said again.

"It's okay." His voice was small.

I gripped the steering wheel and drove home. My mind was already moving ahead, calculating. Quentin had seen Kole. He'd done the math. He would come next. He always did.

That evening, after Kole was asleep, I sat in the kitchen with my phone in my hand. The apartment was quiet. I could hear the hum of the refrigerator, the distant sound of traffic outside.

I called Kaiser.

He picked up on the second ring. "Liv."

His voice was steady. It always was.

"Quentin saw Kole today," I said. "At the field day. He's decided Kole is his."

There was a pause. Not long. Just enough for Kaiser to process.

"I'll have someone look into his current activities by morning," he said.

His tone had shifted. Not louder. Not angrier. Just colder. Like something had been removed.

"Don't move yet," I said. "I want to handle this myself. For as long as I can."

Another pause.

"All right," Kaiser said. "But the moment that changes, you tell me."

"I will."

I hung up and set the phone on the counter. I sat there for a long time, staring at nothing.

I'd built this life from nothing. I'd survived the worst thing I could imagine and come out the other side with a son I loved and a man who chose me every single day.

And now Quentin was back.

I wasn't afraid of him. Not anymore.

But I knew what obsession looked like. I'd seen it before, in the months before our marriage fell apart. When Quentin wanted something, he didn't stop. He didn't hear no. He just kept pushing until the world bent to match the story in his head.

I stood up and walked to Kole's room. I opened the door quietly and looked in. He was asleep, one arm flung over his head, his stuffed bear tucked under the other.

I would protect this. Whatever it took.

I closed the door and went back to the kitchen. I didn't sleep much that night.
