After My Ex-Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Baby

8.3 / 10.0
The warmth has faded from her coffee, much like the joy in her own life. Sitting alone in the dimming light of an empty classroom, a dedicated schoolteacher works through a stack of family essays written by her third-grade students. Having graded nineteen heartwarming stories of pets and grandmothers, her red pen suddenly freezes over the twentieth page. The name written in bold, proud letters is Esme Daniels, a stark reminder of a past she cannot escape.

After My Ex-Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Baby Chapter 1

The coffee went cold an hour ago. I don't remember when I stopped tasting it. My third-graders' essays sit stacked on my desk in the empty classroom, afternoon light slanting through the blinds in pale stripes. Twenty-two papers about families. Dogs and grandmas and baby brothers. I've read nineteen of them. My red pen hovers over the twentieth.

The handwriting is big. Proud. Esme Daniels, printed carefully in the header.

I read the first sentence.

Then I read it again.

*My mom loved my dad so much she fought for him and won him from another woman who wasn't good enough.*

The words sit on the page like they're breathing.

I set the paper down. Pick it up. Set it down again. My hands are steady. That surprises me. Five years ago they shook for months. Now they just rest on the desk, flat and still, while something old and buried shifts under my ribs.

Daniels.

The name in the header might as well be a detonation.

I straighten the stack of papers once. Then again. The motion helps. Small tasks. Controllable things. I learned that in the years when nothing else was.

Esme Daniels is eight years old. She has dark curls and a gap between her front teeth. She sits in the third row and chews her pencil when she's thinking. Yesterday she asked if I liked her drawing of a cat. I told her the whiskers were especially good. She beamed.

She doesn't know.

She can't know.

I pull Esme's file from my desk drawer. Emergency contacts. Medical information. And there, listed under *Primary Guardian*, a phone number I haven't seen in five years but would recognize in my sleep.

I should wait. I should hand this to the vice principal. I should do anything except what I'm about to do.

I pick up my phone.

The number is still in my contacts. I never deleted it. I never looked at it either. For five years it just sat there, a name I scrolled past without seeing. Now I press it before I can think better of the choice.

It rings once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a voice I haven't heard in five years answers, low and assured and so familiar my throat closes. "Hello?"

I breathe in. Out. The way I learned when breathing was the only thing I could control.

"Mr. Daniels," I say. My voice comes out warm. Professional. Utterly impersonal. "This is Ms. Cunningham, Esme's teacher at Northlake Elementary. I'm calling to request a parent-teacher conference regarding a recent writing assignment. Would you be available this Thursday after school?"

Silence.

It stretches. I count the seconds. One. Two. Three.

"Harlow." My name in his mouth sounds like a wound reopening.

"Thursday at three-thirty works well for most parents," I continue, as if he hasn't spoken. "Or Friday at four if that's better for your schedule."

Another pause. I hear him breathing. I wonder if he can hear me doing the same.

"Thursday," he says finally. His voice has gone careful. Too careful. "Three-thirty."

"Perfect. I'll see you then, Mr. Daniels."

I hang up before the silence between us can become anything other than professional.

Then I set my phone face-down on the desk and stare at the stack of essays until the words blur.

That night I sit on my couch in the dark. I don't turn on the lights. I don't pour a drink, though the bottle in the cabinet whispers like it used to. I just sit and breathe. In for four counts. Hold for four. Out for four. The rhythm I learned in the worst year of my life, when breathing was an act of survival and nothing else.

By morning I've made my decision.

I will do my job. I will teach this child. I will not punish a daughter for her parents' sins. I will not allow the past to reclaim the life I built from its wreckage, brick by brick, breath by breath, over five long years.

I text Maddison at six a.m.: *You're not going to believe who walked into my classroom today.*

She calls before I finish making coffee.

"Tell me," she says. No preamble. That's Maddison.

I tell her. All of it. The essay. The name. The phone call. The way his voice sounded when he said mine.

When I finish, she's quiet for exactly three seconds.

"You don't owe him a single goddamn thing," she says. Firm. Clear. No melodrama. "Not even your anger."

"I know," I say.

And I do. The steadiness in my own voice surprises me—not because I doubted it, but because this is the first time I've had to use it against a target this specific.

I mean it entirely.

Maddison exhales. "You need me there Thursday?"

"No." I look at my reflection in the dark window. The woman looking back is calm. Composed. Unbreakable. "I've got this."

"Yeah," Maddison says softly. "You do."

After we hang up, I finish my coffee. I water the succulents on the windowsill. I lay out my clothes for tomorrow. Small tasks. Controllable things.

Thursday is two days away.

I've survived worse.
