Chapter 1

The screen in the pit lane showed everything twice as bright as real life. That's what stadium lights do. They make every smile look bigger, every kiss look longer.

I stood behind the barrier with a headset still looped around my neck, watching Camden Walker lift the trophy over his head. Six years I'd sat beside him in that car. Six years of my voice in his ear, telling him when to brake, when to breathe. Pacific Coast Rally Championship. His first big one. Our first big one, I thought, stupidly, right up until the moment he turned to the crowd and said her name into the microphone.

"This one's for Oakley."

The crowd screamed like that was the most romantic thing they'd ever heard. Oakley Meyer climbed onto the podium in her white jumpsuit, hair falling out of its braid just enough to look effortless, and Camden pulled her in and kissed her in front of every camera in Los Angeles.

I didn't move. I've been trained my whole life not to move when something goes wrong at speed. My father used to say panic kills faster than the crash does. So I just watched the monitor, and I watched the noise swallow up whatever sound my heart made when it broke.

I told myself there had to be an explanation. There wasn't.

Two hours later, in the garage, the rain had started. Camden stood under the bay lights with his arms crossed, still in his race suit, unzipped to the waist. Oakley wasn't there yet. That was almost worse — like he wanted to say it to me alone first, get the ugly part over with before she showed up to enjoy the aftermath.

"You're not on the team anymore," he said. No warm-up. No apology. Just that.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me, Elina. You've been holding me back." He wouldn't look right at me, which almost made it worse. "Oakley gets my instincts. She doesn't overthink every corner like it's a math problem."

"I built those math problems for six years," I said. My voice came out flat, which surprised me, because inside I was anything but. "I have the data. I have the routes. I have the financial records showing exactly whose savings paid for your first car, Camden."

"Here we go." He rolled his eyes like I was the one being unreasonable. "Always with the numbers. Always with the receipts."

I reached into my bag and pulled out the pace notes — seventy-two hours of work, every corner annotated, every tire condition logged, my father's old shorthand bleeding through mine on every page. I held them out like they'd remind him of something.

He took them from my hand.

Then he walked to the open garage bay, and he dropped them into the puddle collecting rainwater just outside it.

The pages went dark and soft almost instantly. Ink spread. Corners I'd drawn by hand, gone in seconds, bleeding into gray water.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I just stood there and watched seventy-two hours of my life dissolve at his feet.

That's when Oakley walked in, shaking rain off her jacket, and leaned against the hood of Camden's car like she owned the garage. The crew gathered loosely behind her, the way people gather behind whoever's winning.

"Wow," she said, looking at me crouched in the rain now, gathering the ruined pages. "Still trying to be useful, huh?" She laughed, and it was a pretty laugh, practiced, the kind that made men laugh along with her without thinking about why. "I heard she slept her way onto this team in the first place. Guess some habits don't die."

The crew laughed. Not all of them. But enough.

I didn't answer. I didn't look up. I picked up every page I could reach, the wet paper tearing a little in my fingers, and I folded what was left into my jacket like it still mattered, because it did, even ruined.

Then I walked out into the Los Angeles night alone.

I didn't cry until I was three blocks away, sitting in my car with the engine off, the rain drumming on the roof loud enough to cover the sound if anyone had been listening. Nobody was. That was the point.

By the next morning, my phone wouldn't stop buzzing. I opened it expecting condolences. I got a hashtag instead.

#ClingerElina.

#FraudCoPilot.

Someone — Oakley, I'd learn later, though it hardly needed confirming — had posted a photo of me from years ago, captioned with a story about sabotage, about jealousy, about a woman who couldn't let go of a man who'd outgrown her. Thousands of comments. Strangers who knew nothing about pace notes or terrain or six years of unpaid work, deciding in a single scroll exactly who I was.

My sponsors called that afternoon. Every one of them said some version of the same thing: we need to distance ourselves for now.

I sat on the floor of my apartment with my father's water-stained manuscripts in my lap, the ones I hadn't lost yet, and I thought about how quiet a life can get when everyone decides, all at once, that you don't matter.
