Chapter 1

The ballroom on the forty-second floor had never looked like this.

Flowers everywhere. White and gold. The kind of arrangement that costs more than most people's monthly rent. Cameras from three different networks. Shareholders in their best suits, wives in their best jewelry, all of them holding champagne flutes and smiling the way people smile when they're being photographed.

I stood in the front row and watched my son walk to the podium.

Oliver. Thirty-two years old. Shoulders back. Chin level. He moved through a room the way I'd spent twenty years teaching him to — like he belonged there, because he did.

I'd worn the dark charcoal suit. The one Margaret always said made me look like I'd already won whatever argument I was about to have. I'd chosen it deliberately this morning, standing in front of my closet at five a.m. when the city was still gray and quiet. Old habit. I dressed for the day I expected, not the day I hoped for.

Oliver adjusted the microphone and looked out at the room. The Wells Group logo glowed on the screen behind him — the redesigned one, the one I'd commissioned twelve years ago when I finally pulled us out of the red for good.

He spoke well. He always spoke well. He talked about the company's future, about the team, about the responsibility of the chair. His voice was steady. No nerves. I felt something move through my chest — not pride exactly. Deeper than that. The particular ache of watching something you built with your hands stand up on its own.

Then he paused.

He looked directly at me.

"None of this exists," he said, "without the woman sitting in the front row. She knows who she is. So does everyone in this room."

The applause started.

I smiled. A real one. Small, but real.

That was when the ballroom doors opened.

I heard it before I saw it — the change in the room's air pressure, the way the applause stuttered and died at the edges. Heads turning. A murmur moving through the crowd like a current.

I didn't turn around right away.

I already knew.

I'd known this day was coming for twenty years. I'd just never known which day.

When I finally turned, he was already halfway across the room.

Erik Wells. Sixty-one years old. Gray at the temples now, but the same jawline, the same easy stride, the same expression — that particular brand of confidence that had nothing to do with having earned anything. He was wearing a charcoal suit that probably cost four thousand dollars. He'd always known how to dress for a room.

Sapphire Dixon was on his arm.

She was still beautiful in the way that expensive maintenance makes a person beautiful. Her dress was wrong for the occasion — too much, too deliberate, the kind of outfit you pick when you've rehearsed your entrance. Her eyes moved through the crowd immediately, searching. I knew what she was looking for.

I watched her find Oliver at the podium.

Her lips parted. Her chin trembled. She'd practiced that.

Erik raised one hand, addressing the room like a man returning to his own dinner party.

"Ladies and gentlemen." His voice carried easily. Of course it did. "I apologize for the interruption. As the rightful Wells heir — and the man whose name is on this company's founding documents — I believe it's past time I came home to reclaim my place."

The silence was total.

I did not move.

I did not change my expression.

I pressed two fingers to the inside of my left wrist, just below the cuff of my jacket. Pressed them there and held. A private thing. My own.

Across the room, Oliver's eyes found mine over the heads of three hundred people.

His jaw set. That small, almost invisible tightening I knew better than I knew my own heartbeat.

He did not step down from the podium.

Good boy.

Security came. Four of them, moving with the quiet efficiency I'd spent years selecting them for. Erik's composure held until the moment a hand closed around his elbow — and then something cracked in his face, just briefly. Bewilderment. The specific bewilderment of a man who had never once imagined the room would not be on his side.

They walked him through the lobby he'd expected to own by nightfall.

Sapphire went with him, her rehearsed tears now slightly less composed than she'd planned.

I watched them go. Then I turned back to the front of the room.

---

Oliver came to my office at nine.

I heard him knock once before he opened the door. The safe behind my desk was already open. The file was already on the desk, under the lamp, exactly where it had been waiting.

He stood in the doorway for a moment, looking at me.

"Mom." Just that. The way he'd said it since he was four years old.

"I'm all right," I said, before he could ask.

He came in anyway. Sat in the chair across from me. His eyes went to the file, then back to my face.

"How long have you had that ready?"

"Twenty years." I closed the file. Looked at him. "I've been ready for this day for twenty years."

The lamp threw a warm circle of light between us. Outside, Manhattan glittered forty floors below.

"What do you need me to do?" he asked.

I held his gaze for a moment. This man. This son.

"Exactly what you would have done anyway," I said. "Be my son."

He nodded once.

Outside the windows, the city hummed on, indifferent and enormous.

I reached out and opened the file again.
