Chapter 3

I took every booking that came through.

Brides who wanted the natural look. Bridesmaids who wanted drama. Mothers-of-the-groom who touched their jawlines nervously and asked if I could make them look younger without looking different. I said yes to all of them. Early morning slots, late evening trials, back-to-back Saturdays until my hands cramped and my lower back ached.

The work steadied me. The weight of a brush in my hand. The focus it required. The way a client's face would shift when I turned the mirror and they saw themselves transformed — not into someone else, but into the version of themselves they'd been hoping for.

I stopped checking Greyson's texts in real time. Once a day, I'd scroll through, screenshot whatever had accumulated, and file it away. The messages grew more irritated. "Grace, seriously, where are you?" "Mom's asking about you." "This is ridiculous."

I didn't respond.

Ten days before the wedding, the studio door chimed at 2 PM.

I looked up from cleaning brushes. A woman stepped inside, mid-twenties, blonde hair in loose waves that had clearly been professionally blown out that morning. Chanel bag. Cream-colored coat that probably cost more than my monthly rent. She moved through the space like she was appraising it, her gaze sliding over my hand-lettered service menu, the Edison bulb lighting, the vintage mirror I'd restored myself.

She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes.

"Grace Taylor?" she asked.

"That's me."

"I'm Juliet." She extended a hand. Her nails were perfect ovals, painted ballet pink. "I have a 2 o'clock for a bridal trial?"

I shook her hand. Her grip was firm, performative. "Of course. Have a seat."

She settled into the makeup chair, set her bag on the counter, and met my eyes in the mirror. "This place is so cute. How long have you been here?"

"Three years."

"And you do this all yourself? Just you?"

"Just me."

"Wow." She tilted her head, studying my face. "That must be so much work. Where did you train?"

I pulled out my kit, started laying brushes in order. "A few different places. Workshops in the city, some online courses. Mostly practice."

"Self-taught," she said, like she was tasting the words. "That's so impressive. I mean, to build something from nothing like this."

I dampened a beauty sponge. "What kind of look are you going for?"

"Romantic. Glowing. Nothing too heavy." She leaned back, relaxed, like we were old friends. "The wedding's at a rooftop venue in Manhattan. Sunset ceremony. I want to look like myself, just… elevated."

"I can do that."

I started with primer, smoothing it across her skin. She had good bone structure. Clear complexion. The kind of face that didn't need much.

"My fiancé is so particular," she said, eyes closed. "He notices everything. If my lipstick is the wrong shade, if my hair is too flat. He's very… attentive."

I blended foundation along her jawline. Didn't respond.

"His name is Greyson," she continued. "Greyson Wheeler. Do you know him?"

My hand didn't falter. I kept the sponge moving, even pressure, jaw to cheekbone. "No."

"Really?" Her eyes opened, met mine in the mirror. "That's funny. He said he knew someone in Brooklyn who did makeup. Small world, I guess."

I reached for the concealer. "Maybe."

She watched me work for a moment. Then she smiled again, and this time there was something sharper underneath it. "His mother adores me. Margaret. Have you heard of her?"

I dotted concealer under her eyes. Blended it with my ring finger. "I don't think so."

"She's been through so much. That car accident, all those years of recovery. Greyson says she's finally in a good place now." Juliet's voice softened, turned almost pitying. "There was someone helping her before. A live-in situation, I think? Some girl who stayed with them for a while."

I set down the concealer. Picked up a contour brush.

"He told me about you," Juliet said.

I met her eyes in the mirror.

"It must have been confusing," she continued. "Being there so much. Taking care of his mom. I can see how you'd think it was more than it was." She tilted her head, studying me. "But you were never his girlfriend, sweetheart. You were the help."

The brush was steady in my hand. I dragged it along her cheekbone, slow and precise.

"He felt bad about it," Juliet said. "Leading you on like that. But he said you owed him anyway. Something about a favor from years ago? So I guess it all worked out."

I finished the contour. Set the brush down. Reached for the powder.

"I'm sure you understand," she said. Her voice was light, breezy, like we were discussing the weather. "He's marrying me because he loves me. Not because I… I don't know, did his laundry or whatever."

I dusted powder across her T-zone. Under her eyes. Along her forehead.

"Anyway." She waved a hand, dismissive. "I just wanted to clear the air. No hard feelings, right?"

I stepped back. Looked at her face in the mirror. Flawless base. Perfect contour. Skin that glowed like she'd been lit from within.

"Close your eyes," I said.

She did.

I picked up an eyeshadow palette. My hands didn't shake. I worked in silence, blending shadow into her crease, building depth and dimension. She didn't speak. Just sat there, eyes closed, a small smile on her lips like she'd won something.

When I finished, I stepped back again.

"You can look," I said.

She opened her eyes. Stared at herself. Her smile widened.

"Oh my God," she breathed. "This is perfect."

"I'm glad you like it."

She stood, pulled out her wallet, and set five hundred-dollar bills on the counter without counting them. "Keep the change. And I'll see you at the wedding, right? I want you there for day-of. I'll text you the details."

"Of course," I said.

She picked up her Chanel bag, gave me one last smile, and walked out.

The door chimed shut.

I stood there for a long moment, staring at the money on the counter. Then I picked it up, folded it carefully, and put it in my wallet.

I pulled out my phone. Opened my calendar. Found the date: ten days from now. Saturday evening. A rooftop venue in Manhattan.

I typed a single note under the entry: *Showtime.*

Then I went back to cleaning my brushes.
