After My Boyfriend Stole My Patents, I Destroyed Him
Chapter 1
The ballroom was blindingly bright. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, casting sharp light over hundreds of guests in black-tie attire. Champagne glasses clinked around me, but I stayed near the back curtains in my simple black dress. My hands were folded quietly in front of me.
Up on the stage stood Ryan Howell. He was the CEO of Lumina Cosmetics, and for the last three years, he had been my secret boyfriend.
Tonight was our launch gala. It was the night that was supposed to save Lumina from bankruptcy. I had spent three years hidden away in the basement lab for this moment. I tested forty-seven revisions of our miracle serum. I worked until my eyes burned and lived on black coffee and hope.
Just yesterday, Ryan had kissed my forehead in his office. *“When the time is right, Elaina, I’ll tell everyone who the real genius is,”* he had promised.
I looked at him now under the spotlight. Ryan adjusted his microphone and flashed his signature, charming smile.
"Behind every great revolution," Ryan’s voice boomed through the speakers, "there is a spark of inspiration. A soul who brings the vision to life."
My breath hitched. I squeezed my fingers together. This was it. Finally, he was going to say my name.
"Please welcome Lumina's creative soul," Ryan called out, gesturing toward the front row. "My muse, Kaylani Cruz!"
The room burst into wild applause.
A woman in a shimmering gold dress glided up the steps. It was Kaylani, the social media star. Ryan reached out, took her hand, and pulled her onto the stage. He slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her tight against his side.
"Kaylani’s visionary brand instinct gave birth to this product," Ryan announced to the crowd. "Without her, Lumina wouldn't be standing here today."
Cameras flashed in a frantic rhythm. Ryan looked down at Kaylani, his eyes filled with open admiration.
My name was never spoken.
I didn't cry. I didn't gasp. A cold, heavy stillness settled deep in my chest.
I slipped through the side exit and waited in the concrete stairwell behind the ballroom.
Ten minutes later, the heavy metal door clicked open. Ryan walked in, checking the luxury watch on his wrist. When he spotted me, he didn't even flinch. He just offered an easy grin.
"There you are, babe," he said, walking closer. "Did you hear that applause? The investors are hooked."
"You gave her my work, Ryan," I said. My voice was low and steady.
Ryan rolled his eyes and rubbed his neck. "Come on, Elaina. Don't start this now. It was just a branding decision."
"A branding decision?"
"Investors don't want a nerdy chemist in a stained lab coat," he said smoothly. He stepped in and reached for my hand. "They want glamour. Kaylani gives us that face. You know I love you, right? Don't be so insecure."
I pulled my hand back before his fingers could touch my skin.
I reached into my small clutch and pulled out a folded document. I pushed it against his chest.
Ryan frowned, looking down at the papers. "What's this?"
"My resignation," I said. "And my exit agreement."
Ryan let out a dry chuckle. "Are you serious? You're throwing a tantrum over a speech?"
"Read section four," I told him calmly. "Every core patent for the formulation is registered under my name alone. Not Lumina's. Mine."
Ryan’s grin twitched, but his arrogance rushed right back. He shook his head like I was an unruly child. "Right. Sure they are. Look, you're emotional right now. Go home, take a bath, and sleep it off. You'll regret this in the morning."
He reached out to touch my shoulder.
I took a step back, turned around, and pushed through the door.
"Elaina!" he shouted from behind me. "Stop being so dramatic! You'll be back tomorrow!"
I let the heavy door slam shut between us.
I took a cab back to our shared apartment. The rooms were cold and dark.
I didn't turn on the lights. I pulled my suitcase from the bedroom closet and packed only what belonged to me. My clothes, my coats, and my thick, unmarked formula notebooks. I didn't touch anything Ryan had bought me.
In the kitchen, I reached behind my neck and unclasped the diamond necklace Ryan gave me for our second anniversary. I dropped it on the marble counter. It made a sharp, tiny clatter.
I opened my laptop on the island. My fingers moved across the keyboard without hesitation. With three clicks, I wiped my credentials and locked down my remote access to Lumina's internal system. The chemical mixing ratios and the temperature control algorithms were all stored in my private code. Without me, the factory lines would collapse in forty-eight hours.
I shut the laptop.
Next, I pulled out my phone. I went straight to my contacts, changed my settings, and blocked Ryan's number. Then I blocked him on every social app.
There was only one last thing to do.
I scrolled down to a name I hadn't opened in months: Cal Warren.
Cal was the CEO of Vantage Group, the biggest powerhouse in the industry. He had offered me a spot on his research team twice over the past two years. Both times, I turned him down out of foolish loyalty to Ryan.
I tapped out a single line:
*I'm ready to accept your offer.*
I hit send.
The screen went black. I zipped my bag, pulled on my coat, and walked out the door. The latch clicked shut.
Outside, the street was quiet and bathed in gray, predawn light. I took a deep breath of the cold air, lifted my chin, and walked away without looking back.
