Chapter 2

I walked for hours. Through streets I knew and streets I didn't. Past closed shops and lit windows. Past couples holding hands and taxis with their lights on. I didn't think about where I was going. I just moved.

The city was quieter after midnight. Softer. The noise thinned out into something I could breathe through. My heels clicked on the pavement. My purse strap dug into my shoulder. I didn't stop.

I thought about the notebook in my bag. Five years of work. Five years of ideas that became products. Algorithms that became revenue. Designs that became awards. All of it mine. All of it taken.

I thought about Darren's face in the hallway. The slight confusion. The certainty that I would come back. That I always came back.

I thought about Jovie Patterson holding the trophy. Smiling like she'd earned it.

I thought about Sterling Mitchell's calm voice. *I recognized your work tonight.*

When I finally looked up, I was standing outside my apartment building. I didn't remember walking the last six blocks.

I climbed the stairs. Unlocked the door. Dropped my purse on the kitchen table and sat down in the chair by the window. The card was still in the side pocket where I'd left it. I pulled it out and held it under the lamp.

Sterling Mitchell. Apex Dynamics. The number on the back was written in small, neat handwriting. No flourish. No hesitation. Just the digits.

I turned the card over once. Then again.

Then I picked up my phone and dialed.

He answered on the second ring.

"Sterling Mitchell."

His voice was the same as it had been at the gala. Calm. Steady. Not surprised.

"It's Mallory Bishop," I said.

"I know."

I waited. He didn't fill the silence.

"You said I could call," I said. "About work."

"I did."

"Is the offer real?"

"Yes."

I looked out the window. The street below was empty. A single car passed, headlights cutting through the dark.

"I want to hear it," I said. "All of it. What you're actually offering."

"Tomorrow," he said. "Ten a.m. My office. I'll send the address."

"Okay."

"Mallory."

I stopped.

"Bring the notebook," he said.

I hung up. My hands were steady. My chest felt light.

I didn't sleep that night. I sat at the table and went through every page of the notebook. Every sketch. Every framework. Every concept Darren had repackaged as his own. I didn't cry. I didn't feel sad. I felt clear.

At nine-thirty the next morning, I stood outside a glass tower in Midtown. Apex Dynamics was on the forty-second floor. I took the elevator up and gave my name to the receptionist. She smiled and led me down a quiet hallway to a corner office.

Sterling was standing by the window when I walked in. He turned and gestured to the chair across from his desk.

"Thank you for coming," he said.

I sat. He sat. The office was clean. Minimal. One wall was floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with research papers and journals. I recognized some of the spines.

He slid a folder across the desk.

"This is the offer," he said. "Chief Strategy Officer. Full creative authority. Your name on every patent. Equity stake. And this."

He opened the folder and pointed to a clause near the bottom of the first page. I leaned forward and read it.

*All intellectual property developed by Mallory Bishop, whether prior to or during employment, remains the sole property of Mallory Bishop unless explicitly transferred in writing with independent legal counsel present.*

I stared at the words. Then I looked up at him.

"You're protecting me," I said.

"I'm protecting your work," he said. "There's a difference."

I read the clause again. Then I read the rest of the contract. Salary. Benefits. Reporting structure. It was all there. Clear. Direct. No fine print.

"Why?" I asked.

He leaned back in his chair. "Because I've spent a year watching Howard Enterprises win awards for work that didn't sound like Darren Howard. And then I read your publications. And then I knew."

"You've been tracking me."

"I've been paying attention," he said. "There's a difference."

I looked at the contract again. My name. My terms. My work.

"I'm not asking you to stand behind me," Sterling said quietly. "I'm asking you to stand beside me."

I picked up the pen on the desk. I turned to the last page. I signed my name.

When I set the pen down, Sterling reached across the desk. His hand brushed mine as he took the contract. Neither of us moved for a second.

Then he pulled back and closed the folder.

"Welcome to Apex," he said.

I nodded. My throat was tight. Not from sadness. From something else. Something I didn't have a name for yet.

"When do I start?" I asked.

"Whenever you're ready."

I stood. He stood. We shook hands. His grip was firm. Steady.

"Monday," I said.

He smiled. It was small. Real.

"I'll see you then."

I walked out of the office, down the hallway, into the elevator. The doors closed. I looked at my reflection in the polished steel.

I looked different. Taller. Clearer.

I looked like myself.
