Chapter 3

I drove across the bridge to Bellevue.

The Clark family home sat behind a hedge of wet rhododendrons. It looked the same as always. Gray siding, white trim, and the smell of damp cedar in the air. I parked at the curb, took a breath, and walked up the front steps.

My adoptive father, Lawson, opened the door before I could knock.

He was tall and broad-shouldered, with silver hair cropped close. He wore his usual faded flannel shirt. His gray eyes swept over me, steady and quiet.

"Autumn," he said. His voice was deep and measured. He always spoke like he was testing the ice before stepping onto it. "You didn't say you were flying in."

"I took the red-eye," I said.

My adoptive mother, Brynn, appeared behind him in the foyer. She wiped her hands on a dishtowel. A smile touched her lips, but she paused—just one beat too long—before she stepped forward.

"Autumn, honey," Brynn said softly.

She reached out to touch my cheek, but her hand hesitated in midair. She lowered it and patted my shoulder instead. It was always like that. Warm, but careful. Like I was made of spun glass that might shatter if she held me too tight.

"Come inside," Brynn said. "I just brewed a fresh pot."

We sat in the living room. Lawson took his armchair by the cold stone fireplace. Brynn set a cup of black coffee on the table in front of me, then sat on the sofa.

The silence stretched thin. I didn't want small talk. I didn't have the stomach for it.

"Jace is alive," I said.

My voice was flat. It dropped into the quiet room like a lead weight.

Lawson’s jaw tightened. The color drained from his face, leaving his skin the shade of wet cement. He didn't blink.

Brynn froze. Her fingers were curled around her mug. She set it down on the saucer very carefully, making sure the porcelain didn't make a sound.

"Autumn," Brynn whispered. "What did you say?"

"He didn't die in that crash three years ago," I said. "He faked it. And on Saturday, he is marrying Tessa."

Lawson stood up abruptly. He walked to the window, his back to me. His hands curled into tight fists at his sides.

"We knew something was wrong," Lawson said, his voice rough. "She started seeing someone eighteen months ago. She called him Jason. She wouldn't let us meet him."

"Every time we set a dinner, he had an emergency," Brynn said. Her eyes filled with tears, but her voice stayed low, guarded. "A late shift. A sick relative. We told Tessa it felt off. We told her to bring him here."

"And?" I asked.

"She screamed at us," Brynn murmured. "She threw things. She said we were trying to ruin her happiness because she wasn't perfect like you. She said we didn't trust her."

"We had no proof of anything, Autumn," Lawson said, turning around. His eyes looked tired. "Just bad feelings. Tessa threatened to cut us off completely if we pushed. So we stepped back."

I looked at them. Lawson stood tall, holding his shoulders square. Brynn sat with her knees pressed together, watching me with that careful, watchful pity.

They were holding something back. They had been holding something back my entire life. It was a glass wall between us. They gave me a home, food, and safe shelter, but they kept a piece of themselves locked in another room.

The old sting pricked my throat. I swallowed it down.

"I'm handling it," I said.

I stood up and left before they could ask another question.

For the next forty-eight hours, I stayed in a cheap motel near the airport. I didn't sleep. The neon sign outside buzzed through the thin curtains, painting the stained carpet red and blue.

I set my laptop on the small desk and dug into Jace Turner.

Public records were easy to find if you knew where to look. I paid for background check databases. I tracked property deeds, vehicle registrations, and social media accounts.

Samira and Ryland hadn't bothered to hide anything. Their profiles were wide open.

I clicked through Samira’s photo albums.

There was Samira under a palm tree in Maui, wearing huge designer sunglasses and a white linen dress. The caption read: *Healing my broken heart in paradise.* The date was six months after Jace’s supposed death.

I remembered that month. I had skipped dinner three nights a week because my checking account was fifty dollars short after wiring her twelve hundred dollars for "trauma therapy."

I clicked another picture. Ryland was standing in the driveway of their house, grinning next to a brand-new charcoal SUV. *Early retirement treat,* the post said.

Then came the kitchen photos. Custom white marble countertops. A six-burner stainless steel stove.

My money. Every single tile, every resort stay, every leather handbag. They lived like royalty on the guilt they bled out of me.

Next, I pulled the county files from three years ago.

It took me four hours to find the digital archives for the accident report. I found the death certificate. It was signed by a private physician who had lost his medical license six months later for insurance fraud.

Right under it was the insurance payout.

Jace’s life insurance policy had paid out five hundred thousand dollars to Ryland and Samira just two weeks after the staged wreck.

They cashed the check, hid their son, and kept their hooks in me anyway.

I drove to an all-night print shop at three in the morning.

The laser printer whirred steadily in the empty store. Sheet after sheet slid into the plastic tray. Bank transfers. Venmo logs. Tax documents. Vacation photos. The forged death certificate. The wire routing numbers.

The paper was warm when I picked it up.

I slid every page into clear plastic sleeves and clicked them into a thick, black three-ring binder.

I ran my hand over the heavy cover.

It wasn't just the hundred and eighty-six thousand dollars. It was three years of my youth. Three years of waking up in cold sweats, thinking a good man died in my place. Three years of punishing myself for being alive.

He didn't just steal my money. He stole my life.

I snapped the binder shut. The metal rings clicked like a loaded gun.

"Two more days, Jace," I said softly to the dark car. "See you at the altar."
