Chapter 1

Rain tapped against the cracked glass of my fourth-floor window. It was Tuesday, past eight at night. I sat cross-legged on my secondhand sofa in my cramped Manhattan studio, still wearing my pencil skirt and wrinkled blouse. The room smelled like damp carpet and the cold sesame noodles I was eating straight from the cardboard box.

I set the noodles down and picked up the stack of mail.

Two past-due utility notices. A credit card offer. Then, a heavy, cream-colored envelope.

The paper felt thick and expensive. Gold ink looped across the front, spelling out my name in neat calligraphy. There was no return address, just a Seattle postmark.

I slit it open with my thumb, expecting a fundraiser or a distant cousin’s party. A card slid out into my palm. It had embossed silver trim.

*Jace Turner and Tessa Clark request the honor of your presence at their wedding.*

The room tilted sideways.

My breath caught hard in my throat. I stared at the paper until the letters blurred into black smears.

*Jace Turner.*

My boyfriend. The man who supposedly died three years ago in a twisted wreck on Interstate 5. The man whose skull fractured while he shielded my body with his own. The man whose funeral I attended in black lace, weeping until my ribs ached.

And *Tessa Clark.*

My little sister.

I pressed both hands flat against the wooden coffee table to stop from falling off the couch. My knuckles turned stark white. My heart pounded in my ears like a sledgehammer. It wasn't a joke. It wasn't a cruel hallucination. The wedding was in four days, at a waterfront hotel in downtown Seattle.

The dizziness passed. In its place came a wave of cold, quiet ice.

He wasn't dead. He had never been dead.

I stood up and walked over to my desk. My hands didn't shake. I opened my laptop and logged into my bank accounts.

For thirty-six months, I lived on instant ramen and canned soup so I could pay his debts. I clicked on the scheduled recurring transfers.

Two thousand dollars a month for the mortgage on his townhome. *Cancel.*

One thousand two hundred dollars to his mother, Samira, for her "grief therapy." *Cancel.*

Eight hundred dollars to his father, Ryland, for his "medication." *Cancel.*

Every single wire transfer, every Venmo payment, every dollar of guilt money I had bled out while working eighty hours a week in corporate finance. I went through the statements month by month. I saved every PDF. I took screenshots of every confirmation code.

I created a new folder on my desktop and typed one word: *Evidence.*

At the bottom of the spreadsheet, the three-year total flashed back at me. One hundred and eighty-six thousand dollars.

A short, dry laugh broke out of my chest. It sounded hollow, like a cough in an empty room. I closed the laptop with a sharp click. My eyes were completely dry.

I grabbed my duffel bag from the closet. I threw in two pairs of slacks, three plain shirts, and my toiletries. I slid the fancy wedding invitation into the outer zipper pocket. Then I pulled out my phone and booked a seat on the midnight red-eye flight from JFK to Seattle.

At the door, I turned off the lamp. Before I turned the deadbolt, my right hand rose to the silver pendant resting against the hollow of my throat. It was a smooth, worn coin on a chain—the only thing I had from the life before Lawson and Brynn adopted me. My thumb rubbed the cool metal twice. It was an old reflex.

I let go of the necklace, locked the door, and took the stairs down into the street.

Seattle was wrapped in gray mist when the plane landed.

The morning air smelled like salt and wet cedar. I didn't call my parents. I didn't go to the family house in Bellevue. Instead, I hailed a yellow cab at the curb and gave the driver the address printed on the back of the wedding RSVP card—an apartment complex in Queen Anne.

I climbed the carpeted stairs to unit 304 and knocked twice.

The deadbolt turned. The door cracked open, held by a brass security chain.

"Who is it?" a voice whispered.

"Tessa," I said. "It's me."

The chain rattled and slid free. The door opened wide.

My breath stopped for the second time in twelve hours.

Tessa stood in the doorway wrapped in a faded gray bathrobe. Her dark hair hung limp around her shoulders. Her face was gray, the skin tight over sharp cheekbones. Dark, purple bruises of exhaustion circled her eyes.

Beneath the loose tie of her robe, her belly rounded outward. She was at least five months pregnant.

"Autumn?" Her lips parted. She blinked rapidly, her voice cracking with forced cheer. "What—what are you doing here? You came for the wedding? Jace said you were too busy in New York to fly back."

She stepped forward to hug me. She felt like a bundle of dry sticks under the terrycloth. When a delivery truck backfired on the street below, Tessa flinched violently. Her whole body jerked, and she grabbed my forearm with cold, clammy fingers.

"Sorry," she whispered quickly, looking down at the carpet. "Sorry. I'm just clumsy today. I drop things. Jace says my nerves are shot because of the baby."

"Tessa," I said slowly, watching her face. "How long have you been with him?"

Her eyes darted down the hallway behind her, checking the empty living room. She pulled her robe tighter around her stomach, tucking her chin into her chest.

"Two years," she said in a rush, her voice dropping to a rehearsed, fragile hum. "He saved me, Autumn. After what happened... after what I did. He didn't turn me in. He took care of me. I owe him everything. I have to make it right."

I stared at my little sister. Her eyes were wide, glassy, and filled with a terror so deep it looked like madness.

Something was horribly, completely wrong.
