After My Boyfriend Chose His Girl Best Friend, I Left Novel Cover

After My Boyfriend Chose His Girl Best Friend, I Left

For three weeks, I obsessed over every detail of our anniversary dinner—the Manhattan skyline, candles, wine, even a special dessert waiting in the kitchen. Three years with Keaton Bryant, and I wanted tonight flawless. He showed up late, trailing cologne and flimsy excuses, but I was used to waiting. "You look beautiful," he said, his gaze barely touching my black dress. The words landed flat, rehearsed. We ordered. We ate. And somewhere between the appetizers and the silence, I realized the man across from me had already chosen someone else.

Chapter 3

The conference room at Black Ventures had floor-to-ceiling windows that made you feel exposed. I walked in with my laptop and the product specs I'd memorized on the drive over, and tried not to look like someone who'd spent the previous night staring at her ceiling.

Marcus was already seated, looking marginally less hostile than usual. Our team took one side of the table. Black Ventures took the other. Standard corporate choreography.

Then he walked in.

Tall. Dark suit. The kind of stillness that made everyone else look like they were performing. He set a leather portfolio on the table and his eyes swept the room in one efficient pass before landing on me.

Something in my chest lurched sideways.

I knew him. I didn't know him. The contradiction sat in my throat like swallowed glass.

"Amber Wright," he said, extending his hand across the table. His voice was low, even. "Archer Black."

I shook his hand. His grip was firm, brief, professional. Nothing lingered except the faint sense that I'd missed something important.

"Mr. Black," I said, releasing his hand faster than I meant to.

"Archer," he corrected, and sat down.

The meeting proceeded in the usual way — deliverables, timelines, integration points. I spoke when I needed to. Archer listened with a focus that felt different from attention, something more deliberate. He asked two questions, both precise, both things no one else had thought to ask. Marcus looked impressed despite himself.

When the meeting ended, Archer stayed behind while his team filed out. I was packing my laptop when he spoke again.

"Your launch timeline is aggressive," he said. "But achievable. I'll make sure our engineers prioritize your integration."

"Thank you," I said, and meant it.

He nodded once, then paused. For half a second, something shifted in his expression — recognition, maybe, or the ghost of it. Then it was gone.

"Welcome to Seattle," he said, and walked out.

I stood there longer than I should have, staring at the empty doorway, trying to place the shape of his jaw, the particular way he'd looked at me. Like he'd been waiting.

I shook it off. I had work to do.

Keaton's apartment smelled like takeout he hadn't eaten and laundry he hadn't done. Raven let herself in with the spare key he'd given her years ago, the one that had always felt like a small, private victory.

He was on the couch, phone in hand, scrolling through something with the blank intensity of someone looking for a ghost.

"I brought dinner," Raven said, setting the bag on the counter. Homemade pasta. His favorite, or it used to be.

He didn't look up. "Thanks."

She unpacked the containers, plated the food, brought it to him on the couch. He took it without comment. She sat beside him, close enough that their knees almost touched.

"You've been living on coffee for a week," she said softly. "You need to eat."

"I'm fine."

"You're not fine, Keaton. You look—" She stopped herself, recalibrated. "I'm worried about you."

He set the plate down, untouched. "Do you have Colin Shaw's number?"

Raven blinked. "What?"

"Colin. From the old group. He might know where she went. He was always closer to her than he let on."

"Keaton." Her voice cracked, just slightly. Deliberate. "Can we talk? About us?"

He finally looked at her. His eyes were distant, unfocused. "What about us?"

She'd rehearsed this. She'd planned it for weeks, waiting for the right moment, the right angle of vulnerability. This wasn't the right moment. But she was running out of moments.

"I need to tell you something," she said, letting her voice tremble. "I've been trying not to say it for so long, but I can't keep pretending. I have feelings for you. Real feelings. I always have."

Silence.

Keaton stared at her like she was a word in a language he didn't speak. Then he nodded, absently, the way you nod at a waiter offering more water.

"That's nice," he said. "Do you have Colin's number or not?"

Something cold settled in Raven's chest. Not anger. Worse. Understanding.

She wasn't the point. She had never been the point.

"No," she said quietly. "I don't."

Keaton picked up his phone again, already scrolling, already gone.

Raven stood up, smoothed her skirt, and walked to the door. She left the pasta on the counter. She left the spare key on the table.

She didn't say goodbye.

Keaton didn't notice.

---

That night, I sat in my empty living room with Diana's list in my lap. I'd added three more lines since the first entry.

*I told Marcus no when he tried to dump his work on me.*

*I ordered the lunch I actually wanted instead of the salad.*

*I didn't apologize when I wasn't wrong.*

Small things. Pathetically small.

But they were mine.

I set the list on the counter and looked out the window at the gray water, the city lights reflecting off the surface like scattered coins. Somewhere out there, Keaton was probably still looking for me. Somewhere closer, Archer Black was probably working late, the way men like him always did.

I thought about his handshake. The way he'd said my name.

I thought about the fact that I didn't flinch when he did.

I finished my coffee before it went cold.
