After My Boyfriend Chose His Girl Best Friend, I Left Novel Cover

After My Boyfriend Chose His Girl Best Friend, I Left

For three weeks, I obsessed over every detail of our anniversary dinner—the Manhattan skyline, candles, wine, even a special dessert waiting in the kitchen. Three years with Keaton Bryant, and I wanted tonight flawless. He showed up late, trailing cologne and flimsy excuses, but I was used to waiting. "You look beautiful," he said, his gaze barely touching my black dress. The words landed flat, rehearsed. We ordered. We ate. And somewhere between the appetizers and the silence, I realized the man across from me had already chosen someone else.

Chapter 1

I spent three weeks planning the perfect anniversary dinner. Three weeks choosing the restaurant, ordering the flowers, selecting the wine. Three years of loving Keaton Bryant, and I wanted tonight to be perfect.

The maître d' at Le Ciel led us to our table — a corner booth with a view of the Manhattan skyline, candles flickering between crystal glasses. I'd arranged everything: the reservation, the seating, even the special dessert waiting in the kitchen. Keaton arrived fifteen minutes late, smelling of cologne and excuses, but I'd grown used to waiting.

"You look beautiful," he said, his eyes skimming over my black dress — the one I'd bought specifically for tonight. His compliment felt perfunctory, like something he'd been reminded to say.

We ordered. We ate. I talked about my promotion, the one I'd turned down to stay in New York, to stay close to him. He nodded, his attention drifting to his phone. I pretended not to notice.

Then it happened. His phone buzzed. He glanced down, and I watched his expression change — that familiar shift I'd seen a hundred times before. Raven was calling. Again.

"I have to take this," he said, already standing. "It's Raven. She just got back from London. She's not feeling well. Something about fainting at the airport."

I didn't ask him to stay. Didn't beg him to finish the meal I'd planned so carefully. I just watched him grab his jacket, his keys, his phone — everything except my hand.

"I'm sorry, babe. You know how she gets. I'll make it up to you," he said, already halfway to the door.

He didn't look back.

I sat alone in the candlelight, my reflection fractured in the wine glass. The waiter approached, concern etched on his face. "Would you like to order dessert, madam? Or perhaps I could wrap the remainder of your meal?"

"No, thank you," I said, my voice steady. "I'd like the check."

I paid for both plates, untouched dessert included. I left a generous tip. I walked out into the Manhattan night, my heels clicking against the pavement, and I didn't cry.

Something inside me had changed. Something had finally, irreversibly broken.

The next morning, I woke early. Sunlight streamed through the blinds of our — my — apartment. Keaton hadn't come home. He hadn't called. I knew he wouldn't.

I walked to my desk and pulled open the bottom drawer. There, beneath a stack of old files, was the transfer paperwork from my company. Seattle. Senior project lead. The promotion I'd declined months ago because Keaton had looked at me with those puppy-dog eyes and said, "But then we'd be apart. I need you here."

I'd believed him.

I picked up a pen and signed my name on every line. The ink felt permanent. Final. Like drawing a line in the sand.

Then I called the leasing office for the apartment we were supposed to move into together next month. "I'd like to cancel my application," I said. "Yes, I understand the penalty. I'll pay it. Thank you."

I hung up and looked around the apartment. Three years of my life, packed into boxes and furniture arrangements and shared memories. I started packing methodically, folding clothes, wrapping dishes, labeling each box with neat, precise handwriting.

I didn't tell Keaton. Didn't call him. Didn't text him. I just packed.

Over the next week, Raven's emergencies escalated like clockwork. A sprained ankle that required Keaton to carry her to the car. A panic attack in the middle of the night that only his voice could soothe. Each time, Keaton would call me, his voice apologetic but not sorry.

"She needs me, Amber. You understand, right? She's family."

I'd respond with single syllables. "Yes." "Okay." "Fine."

When he crashed his car rushing to Raven's side after another "emergency," I didn't visit the hospital. I sent one text: "Hope you recover."

For the first time, I heard something crack in his voice when he called back. "Don't you care? I could have been seriously hurt."

I didn't answer.

A week later, I met him at our usual coffee shop. I rolled a suitcase behind me, the kind you take on business trips, not vacations. He looked up from his phone, confusion crossing his face.

"What's going on?" he asked.

"I'm transferring to Seattle," I said, my voice calm. "We're done."

He laughed — a sharp, nervous sound. "You can't be serious. You're not going anywhere. You're just mad. You'll get over it. You always do."

I slid my apartment key across the table. It skidded to a stop in front of him.

"Goodbye, Keaton," I said, standing up.

I walked out, suitcase wheels clicking against the floor. In the elevator, I blocked his number. By the time his laughter died, I was already at JFK, boarding pass in hand.

I didn't look back.
