Chapter 5

Sterling started with her Instagram.

Blocked.

LinkedIn. Blocked. Twitter, which she barely used. Blocked. He tried her personal email from his phone, then from his laptop, then from a dummy account he created at 11 PM sitting at the kitchen table in his coat, still in his coat, the Chanel bag on the counter where Sabrina had moved it when she'd come over and found it in the entryway.

The email bounced.

He called Marcus from building security, who said he didn't have a forwarding address. He called David, the senior copywriter, who said he hadn't heard from her. He called two people from the client side who knew them both — who knew them as a couple, as a unit, as Sterling-and-Kira — and they either didn't know or they did know and had decided, in the privacy of their own judgment, not to say.

At midnight he drove past the office. He didn't know why. He just drove there and sat in the car with the engine running and looked up at the fourth floor. Her window was dark. It had always been the last light on in the building. For three years, if he came back late from a client dinner, he could look up and know she was still there.

The light was off.

He sat there for a while. Then he drove home.

Sabrina had rearranged the living room while he was in LA. The couch was angled differently. The side table had been moved. She had put a vase of white flowers on the bookshelf — white flowers, in the gap where Kira's books used to be — and the effect was not decorative. It was territorial. He looked at it and felt nothing except a low, dull irritation he didn't have the energy to name.

She made dinner. Something with pasta and a sauce that smelled expensive. She set two plates on the table and lit a candle and stood in the kitchen doorway in a way that was clearly meant to be noticed.

Sterling sat down. He ate four bites. He put his fork down.

Sabrina watched him from across the table. Her eyes went soft and wet in that way they did — the way that used to feel like intimacy and now felt like a faucet being turned. She reached across and touched his hand.

He moved his hand to pick up his wine glass.

Later, when he was in the bedroom, he heard her crying in the kitchen. Soft, careful crying. The kind designed to be heard through walls.

He turned off the light and stared at the ceiling.

I laughed on a Thursday.

We were sitting on the floor of my apartment eating Thai food out of containers because I still hadn't bought a proper dining table, and Damian was telling me about a building inspection he'd sat through that afternoon where the inspector had spent forty-five minutes explaining, with great seriousness, why a particular doorknob was structurally significant.

I laughed. Not a polite laugh. A real one — the kind that comes up from somewhere low and catches you off guard and sounds like yourself, just yourself, without anything else underneath it.

I stopped and listened to the sound of it.

Damian was watching me. He didn't say anything. He just looked at me the way he sometimes did — steady and quiet, like he had all the time in the world and nowhere else he'd rather be — and then he reached over and stole a piece of my pad see ew without asking.

I let him.

Eleanor Vance's office smelled like good coffee and old paper. She had the kind of desk that told you she didn't lose things.

She laid out the documents in a row. My employment contract. The bonus clause, highlighted in yellow. Seventeen internal emails in which Sterling had forwarded my work to clients under his own name. The Harlow account correspondence, which showed clearly that I had no assigned role on the project and had never been copied on a single communication.

'Your contract is explicit,' Eleanor said. She had a way of speaking that didn't waste syllables. 'The bonus was guaranteed upon completion of the fiscal year. The termination was retaliatory and improperly documented. The public humiliation — ' she paused, just briefly — 'is a separate matter, and a significant one.'

'How long,' I said.

'Three to four months for arbitration. Possibly less, given the documentation.'

I looked at the papers on her desk. I reached out and squared the stack — aligned the edges, pressed the corners flat.

'Then let's begin,' I said.

The envelope arrived at Sterling's office on a Tuesday.

Thick cream paper. Gilded edge. The Hughes family crest embossed in the upper left corner. He turned it over in his hands before he opened it.

Engagement Celebration. The Plaza Hotel. Hosted by the Hughes Family.

He set it on his desk and read it twice.

Hughes. The name sat in his chest like a stone he needed to move. The Hughes real estate portfolio controlled the leases on three of his firm's four office locations. Two of his largest remaining clients had Hughes family connections. He had been trying to get a meeting with Damian Hughes for eight months.

'It's a networking event,' he told Sabrina that evening. 'Important one. I need to go alone.'

She looked at him. Something moved behind her eyes — quick, calculating, then smoothed over.

'Of course,' she said.

He RSVP'd yes that night.

He had no idea whose engagement it was.
