Chapter 3

Sterling cleared his throat.

'One more item,' he said.

The room had gone very still again. That particular stillness — the kind where people stop shifting in their chairs, stop checking their phones, stop pretending they are anywhere other than exactly here.

He reached into the folder on the table in front of him and pulled out a single sheet of paper. He didn't look at it. He already knew what it said.

'Kira Marshall's year-end bonus. Thirty thousand dollars, contractually designated, performance-based.' He set the paper down. 'Revoked. Effective immediately. Due to the Harlow account loss and the unauthorized resignation.'

I heard someone draw a breath. I didn't look to see who.

'The full amount,' Sterling continued, 'will be redirected to Sabrina Hunt. In recognition of her exceptional potential and her commitment to this team's future.'

Sabrina made a small sound. Soft. Overwhelmed. Sterling reached into his breast pocket and produced a folded tissue — a folded tissue, like he'd planned this, like he'd put it there this morning knowing exactly when he would need it — and held it out to her.

She took it. Pressed it beneath one eye. Then the other.

I looked at the award on the wall.

2019. Best Integrated Campaign, Mid-Size Agency. I had worked on that pitch for eleven days straight. I had eaten takeout at my desk and slept four hours a night and called the client at 6 AM on a Sunday because I'd had an idea I couldn't lose. Sterling had stood at the podium and said we.

Thirty thousand dollars. The down payment. The studio on the Lower East Side with the east-facing window I'd toured twice and photographed on my phone and looked at sometimes late at night when the apartment I shared with Sterling felt less like a home and more like a place I was permitted to stay.

I picked up my bag.

The security guards were already moving toward my desk.

I didn't watch them box my things. I stood by the door while they worked, and I kept my eyes forward, and I breathed in and out at a normal rate. Fourteen people in that room. Fourteen people watching a man take the first real home I had ever almost had and hand it to the woman sleeping in his bed.

They brought the box to the elevator. I followed.

We rode down in silence.

Outside, the December air hit me like a wall. Cold and sharp and honest in a way the room upstairs had not been. They set the box on the sidewalk. One of them — Marcus — hesitated for half a second before he turned and went back inside.

I crouched down.

My grandmother's photo frame was on top. The glass was intact. Her face looked back at me — small and steady, the way she always was, the way I was trying to be. I lifted it out and held it against my chest.

I took out my phone.

I deleted Sterling's number. Then I opened every platform, one by one, and I blocked him. Instagram. LinkedIn. Email. iMessage. All of it. Methodical. Clean. The way you close a window before a storm.

Then I stood up, tucked my grandmother's frame under my arm, and left the box on the sidewalk.

I didn't look back.

I made myself one promise, standing there in the cold with the city moving around me like I wasn't even there. Not one more tear. Not for him. Not for any of it. I was done paying for things that were never mine to begin with.

---

Damian didn't say anything when I got back.

He didn't ask what happened. He didn't bring flowers or pour wine or sit across from me with a careful expression waiting for me to fall apart so he could catch me. He checked that the heat was working. He made sure the refrigerator had food in it. He fixed the bathroom faucet that had been dripping since I moved in.

Three days later, I found a plain manila envelope on the kitchen counter. No note. Just a business card inside.

Eleanor Vance. Labor Attorney.

I stood at the counter for a long time, turning the card over in my fingers. The cardstock was heavy. Her name was clean and plain, no flourishes.

I picked up my phone and called her.

---

At the firm, things started coming apart.

I knew they would. I had known it the way you know a building is structurally unsound — not because you want it to fall, but because you understand load-bearing walls.

Two major clients called asking for me by name. They got Sabrina. They got fumbling answers and contradictory timelines and the particular silence of someone who doesn't know what they don't know.

Projects I had been running quietly — the kind of work no one sees until it stops happening — stalled. Deadlines slipped. Sterling told anyone who asked that Kira had been the problem all along. That Sabrina was the future.

The market didn't agree.

I wasn't there to see it. But I didn't need to be.

I was already building something else.
