Chapter 2

They came on a Tuesday morning.

Two men in dark suits, holding a manila envelope with the company letterhead. I recognized the bigger one — Marcus, from building security. He had the decency not to meet my eyes.

'Ms. Marshall.' The other one held out the envelope. 'Mr. Cole has identified unresolved contractual obligations. There's company property that needs to be accounted for before your resignation can be formally processed.'

I stood in the doorway of my new apartment in my robe and socks. The morning light was thin and cold behind them.

I thought about the laptop. The client files I'd backed up to the company server before I left. I had done everything right — I always did everything right — but I knew how these things could be twisted.

'Give me ten minutes,' I said.

I got dressed. I drank half a cup of coffee standing at the kitchen counter, looking out the window at the street below. I thought about calling Damian. I didn't. This wasn't his fight to walk into first.

I picked up my bag and went with them.

---

The ride to the office was twenty-two minutes. I counted.

I noticed things. The way Marcus kept his eyes on the window the whole time. The way the other guard checked his phone twice, then put it away. The way neither of them spoke.

When we pulled up to the building, I knew.

Not a contractual review. Not a property audit. The lobby was too quiet. The receptionist looked up when I walked in and then looked immediately back down at her desk, the way people do when they've been told not to react.

We took the elevator to the fourth floor.

They walked me to the large conference room — the one with the glass wall that had been covered, I noticed, with the rolling privacy screens we only used for all-hands meetings. The door was closed.

Marcus opened it.

Every person on staff was already seated. Twelve people, maybe fourteen. Some of them looked at me. Most of them didn't. Olive Parker was in the back corner, her hands folded in her lap, her face the color of old paper.

Sterling stood at the head of the table.

Sabrina stood beside him.

She was wearing a new blouse. Silk. Pale blue. Her hands were folded neatly in front of her and her expression was carefully, precisely neutral — the look of someone who has arranged their face and is holding very still so it doesn't slip.

'Kira.' Sterling's voice was smooth. Professional. The voice he used for difficult client calls. 'Your resignation was submitted without proper notice and without completing the standard separation protocol. That makes it unauthorized.'

I set my bag on the floor beside the door.

'There's a procedure,' he said. 'For loyalty accountability. We're going to complete it today.'

The room was very still.

I understood. Every cell in my body understood. And I did not run. I had nowhere to run to that he couldn't reach, and I was not going to give him the satisfaction of watching me try.

I looked at the table. I looked at the faces — some ashamed, some blank, one or two carefully, deliberately empty. I memorized them. All of them. I had always been good at remembering things.

The first person Sterling called forward was a senior copywriter named David. David was forty-three years old. He had a daughter in middle school. He stood up slowly, walked to where I was standing, and hit me across the left cheek with a flat, fast motion that had no weight behind it — the strike of a man trying to do the minimum required.

I didn't move.

Sterling watched.

Sabrina watched.

It went on.

I stopped counting after the fourth person. I focused on the wall behind Sterling's head. The framed agency award from 2019. I had written the campaign that won it. Sterling had accepted the trophy.

Then Olive stood up.

She was crying before she even reached me. Her shoulders were shaking and her face was wet and she was pressing her lips together so hard they'd gone white. She was twenty-four years old. She was on a probationary contract. Her mother had had surgery three weeks ago.

I know all of this because I paid attention. Because I always paid attention.

She raised her hand.

I looked at her. Not through her — at her. I held her eyes and I kept my face still and I let her see that I saw her. That I understood exactly what this was costing her. That I was not going to make it harder than it already was.

Her hand came down.

I didn't flinch.

She stepped back and covered her mouth with both hands and made a sound she was trying very hard not to make.

I looked back at the award on the wall.

Sterling said something. I didn't hear it. I was busy memorizing the room — every face, every averted gaze, every pair of hands folded too tightly in a lap.

I was going to need all of it later.

I was already planning later.
