Chapter 2

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. My body moved on autopilot, retrieving my suitcase from the foyer without making a sound. The words kept echoing in my head like a nightmarish mantra: *Children that aren't even hers. Playing the anxious, touch-averse husband.*

Somehow, I made it back to the elevator without being discovered. My fingers trembled as I pressed the button for the lobby, my wedding ring catching the light—a symbol of six years of lies.

"Mrs. Crawford, heading out again so soon?" Eduardo asked, concern etching his features.

I forced a smile that felt like broken glass. "Just... forgot something important. At a hotel. For my presentation tomorrow."

He hailed a cab, and I mumbled an address to the driver—The Langham, twenty blocks away. Far enough that Nathan wouldn't think to look for me there.

The hotel room was elegant and impersonal, just like my marriage had apparently been. I locked the door, dropped my suitcase, and made it to the bathroom before my legs gave out. The cold porcelain of the bathtub pressed against my back as I slid to the floor, a scream building in my throat that I couldn't release.

My children. Not my children. Cameron's smile, Tyler's laugh—genetic echoes of Victoria, not me. Every bedtime story, every fever, every scraped knee and midnight comfort—had I just been the hired help? The convenient surrogate?

And Nathan. Six years of accepting his condition, of loving him without physical intimacy, of building a life around his needs. All while he fucked my best friend in our home.

The sobs finally came, ripping through me with such violence I thought I might tear apart. I curled into a ball in the empty bathtub, my body convulsing with grief and rage so profound it felt like dying.

I don't know how long I stayed there, but when the tears finally subsided, a cold clarity took their place. I reached for my phone with shaking hands and dialed the one person I knew would help without question.

"Claire?" My brother's voice, concerned even from three thousand miles away. "Aren't you supposed to be home by now?"

"Ethan," I whispered, my voice raw. "I need help. Everything... everything is a lie."

"What happened?" His tone sharpened instantly.

I told him everything—the scene I'd witnessed, the devastating revelations, the complete destruction of the life I thought I had.

"Jesus Christ," he breathed when I finished. "Those fucking monsters."

"I need to know everything, Ethan. How deep this goes. Who else knew. I need—"

"I'm already booking a flight," he interrupted. "But Claire, listen to me. Don't confront them yet. Get whatever evidence you can find. Documents, recordings, anything."

"They're not at the penthouse now," I said, checking the time. "Nathan will be at the office until late. Victoria took the boys somewhere."

"Then go back. Now. Before they return."

* * *

The penthouse was still empty when I returned at nine that evening. I moved silently through the space I'd once called home, now seeing it for what it truly was—a stage set for an elaborate performance.

I packed essentials into a single suitcase: clothes, toiletries, the few pieces of jewelry that had belonged to my mother. I avoided looking at family photos, at the boys' rooms with their carefully chosen decor. Not mine. Never mine.

Nathan's study was my final stop. The room had always been his sanctuary, off-limits during his "work hours." Another lie, I now realized. The heavy mahogany door swung open silently, and I stepped into his private domain.

Behind his desk hung an abstract painting—an original Rothko that Victoria had helped him select. I'd always hated it, its blood-red tones seeming to pulse with malevolence in the dim light. On a hunch, I lifted it from the wall.

There it was. A wall safe, just like in the movies. My fingers hovered over the keypad. What would Nathan use? Our anniversary? Too obvious. The boys' birthdays? I tried both combinations. Nothing.

Victoria's birthday. August 17th.

0-8-1-7.

The safe clicked open.

Inside were stacks of documents, neatly labeled. Financial records. Property deeds. And a thick manila folder labeled "Hampton Incident—Final Report."

My hands trembled as I opened it. Insurance claims. Medical reports. And a private investigator's detailed analysis of my "accident" three years ago—complete with photographs of cut brake lines and a timeline of Nathan's movements that day.

The car crash hadn't been an accident. It had been attempted murder.

I sank into Nathan's leather chair, the evidence of his ultimate betrayal spread before me. He hadn't just lied to me. He had tried to kill me.

And I had survived.

I gathered the documents, tucking them into my suitcase. As I closed the safe and replaced the painting, a cold, unfamiliar resolve settled in my chest. They had taken everything from me—my marriage, my children, my very identity.

Now I would take everything from them.
